Her father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was a classical singer and theater artist. Therefore, Latadidi had got the child of music from her family. Lataji's mother's name was Shevanti (Shudhamati) and she was from Thalner in Maharashtra.
Sur Samrajni Lata Mangeshkar's original last name is Hardikar. But her father changed it from his native village to Mangeshkar because he wanted to represent his village Mangeshi, Goa in his name. Shortly after Lata's birth, the entire family moved to Maharashtra.
