King of Queens is an American situation comedy. Kevin James plays the soft-hearted yet dimwitted Doug Heffernan. The character is based on James' own stand up comedy routine. Heffernan married Carrie, a woman who is arguably out of his league, but is also a "mean girl" who enjoys when others are afraid or uncomfortable. Doug rarely directly confronts his wife, but will often find sneaky or passive aggressive ways to counteract any of her demands that he feels are unreasonable. His plans usually blow up in his face.

Kevin James is actually a stage name. The actor, producer, screenwriter's real name is Kevin George Knipfing. James' has an older brother, Gary Valentine (also a stage name) who appears on the show as his cousin Danny.

Despite his out of shape appearance on the show, James was once a promising athlete. James graduated from Ward Melville High School. While there, he reached the number one spot on the wrestling team, ahead of friend and future professional wrestler Mick Foley. James suffered a back injury which thrust Foley into first place. Both went on to study at the State University of New York where James varsity football team until another back injury permanently ended his sports hopes.

James began his comedy career in 1989 working in clubs and eventually making his way on the talk show circuit. James' first television job was in 1991 on The New Candid Camera, where he used his improvisation skills playing practical jokes on unsuspecting people.

James has had a very successful career in film. He is married actress Steffiana de la Cruz and they have four children.

James was born on Long Island, NY.
