Kakegurui Season 1 Review

I'm an entrepreneur with a variety of interests that range from comics to anime.

I think this demonstrates what we're in for.

I think this demonstrates what we're in for.

Introduction.... i.e. WTF did I just watch?

So I've never seen an anime about gambling. Hell I didn't an anime revolving around gambling could even be possible, yet here we are. And all I've gotta say is "What the frack did I just watch?!" Seriously from the art design leading to some frightening facial expressions to a main character who's a gambling addict...

The Plot...

Kskegurui takes place in Hyakkaou Private School which has asystem that revolves around gambling. Play your cards right, and you could make it big and get rich. Failure results in becoming a bottom feeder or house-pet. It is then that we meet one such house-pet Ryota Suzui, who's in service to Mary Satome. Ryota, then liberated by Yumeko Jabami, before they engage in one gambling game after another.

The Positives...

The positives are that the plot and characters are engaging. This is due to their facial expressions, strategies, and interactions between each other. The most memorable are Midari and Yumeko who are two different degrees of crazy. Midari gets off on death and mutilation, while Yumeko is a gambling addict. She simply enjoy the rush of the risk of gambling. Another positive is the pacing of the gambling matches, as the animators, musicians, and sound team did a good job at relaying the tension of each game...

The Negatives...

The negatives are the stakes as they are inconsequential. When Yumeko loses, she doesn't suffer any torture, mutilation, or death. It's because such consequences are implied, but never pulled off. This could be a turn off to potential viewers. Because some expect such high stakes to be carried out, and would be disappointed to not see it. Another problem is the dark tone of the show given the depraved nature of the cast, as that might not appeal to people.

Conclusion...

In conclusion Kakegurui is an exciting and fun series. And there's an implied theme that illegal gambling is a bad thing. If you're in for a dark series filled with risks, thrills, and shady characters trying to best each other, I recommend giving this look.
