CW's The Originals is a spin-off to The Vampire Diaries. It came into existence in 2013 and ended after a five season haul in 2018. The main characters of the show had already gained popularity prior to the show's release as they portrayed the very same characters in The Vampire Diaries. The Originals is about the original family of vampires who return to New Orleans after a century when a conspiracy about Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) breaks out. To their shock, the city is being ruled by a familiar face, Marcel Gerard, who once was a family member to the Mikaelsons.

Ever since the very first episode of the show aired, fans started loving it, the whole witch business and the vibe of New Orleans was well appreciated by fans. In The Vampire Diaries it is shown that Klaus Mikaelson went to The French Quarter after years and surprisingly got to know about his unborn child and encountered Marcel Gerard as well, these, obviously, became his reasons to stay in New Orleans and being a new chapter of his immortal (not-so-much) life.

Klaus Mikaelson arguably is the most important character from The Originals and there is no doubt regarding this particular thing. However, if you look at the story of the show, it, at various stages addresses that the story of the show is more about Elijah Mikaelson than Klaus.

Elijah Mikaelson was played by Daniel Gilles, who gained popularity after this portrayal of his. He enjoyed a good amount of screentime in the show, probably next to only Joseph Morgan's portrayal of Klaus Mikaelson. The Noble Brother first set foot in the second season of The Vampire Diaries as a villian and later was revealed to be the hero of the whole scene, merely seeking revenge for his family. In the parent show, Elijah was a good side character with a visible depth to his character and an attractive noble side, however, things escalated real quick for the character's development once he arrived in New Orleans.

What makes some people think that The Originals is in fact Elijah's story is that he accompanies Klaus throughout his journey. Elijah had been seeking for his brother's redemption for a thousand years and never completely succeed. Yet, it was his elder brotherly love for Niklaus that he never gave up trying. When Elijah gets to know about Klaus' unborn child, he even confronts Klaus about it to look at it as his redemption. In the very first episode of the show itself, Elijah narrates Klaus' story to Hayley and later becomes the reason why Klaus' unborn child lives because initially, even Klaus himself doesn't care about the baby.

Elijah is the narrator of The Originals, the show starts with Elijah and ends with him and Klaus killing each other and the former's last line being, “It's been a glorious ride, Niklaus. And my greatest honor.” Elijah is successful in his mission after his brother becomes a responsible and a loving father and accompanies him even to death.

The show is based on Elijah's perspective, and even though the lead character of the show is Klaus Mikaelson, the show, according to some fans, is Elijah's story where his seeks his brother's redemption and is successful in the end.
