Is Actor Steven Seagal the Biggest Jerk in Hollywood?
Who Is Steven Seagal? Is He Really a Jerk?
Back in the early 1990s, Steven Seagal was one of the top box office attractions in Hollywood movies. In the ilk of such cinematic butt-kickers as Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Seagal was a martial arts action figure who seemed as tough off the scene as on it.
But Seagal’s star has faded in recent years. His films no longer make megabucks, and nearly all of them are relegated to DTR (direct-to-video). Now he has to make money by fronting shows on cable TV and playing guitar in a rock band.
What happened to Seagal’s acting career? Well, for one thing, Seagal’s name now appears synonymous with the words jerk, bully or a-hole. Do any of these unflattering labels fit Seagal?
Movie Career and Start of Decline
Steven Seagal has a black belt in aikido. With his muscular, six-foot-five frame and good looks, he became an action-adventure leading man in the late 1980s, beginning with Above the Law in 1988. Seagal’s most successful film was Under Siege (1992), which really kicked tail at the box office.
But Seagal’s movie career began sinking in the middle 1990s, as audiences already seemed bored with his limited acting ability and take-no-crap, on-screen persona. It seemed probable that Seagal was just another Hollywood tough guy whose career would quickly fade like that of a professional boxer who meets his match and gets pummeled on national TV.
And Seagal wasn't helping his reputation by being outspoken and intimidating in interviews. He was also quick to criticize others, which didn’t win friends and influence people. Seagal seemed joined at the hip with other hard guys such as Jose Canseco. It’s difficult to like such edgy fellows.
Then, seemingly, Seagal really amped up his boorish behavior:
Seagal Drives Tank Into Arizona Home
In January 2011, near Phoenix, Arizona, Seagal, an animal rights advocate, took part in the police raid of a man suspected of raising roosters used in illegal cock fights. While filming a segment for his reality show, Steven Seagal: Lawman, and clad in battle fatigues and driving in a SWAT tank, Seagal and sheriff deputies raided the home of Jesus Llovera.
Setting off explosives to “distract” Llovera, the deputies also smashed a fence and broke out windows in Llovera’s home. During the bust, Llovera’s 11-month-old puppy was killed (perhaps shot), and some 100 roosters were also dispatched without quarter.
Did Seagal have anything to do with the carnage? He claimed he didn’t. At any rate, was Seagal a jerk for being there in the first place? Hey, reality shows need, uh, reality!
Nevertheless, Seagal, an animal rights proponent, seemed at least partially responsible for killing one puppy dog and 100 roosters!
Seagal Sued for Sexual Harassment
In April 2010, Kayden Nguyen, a 20-something ex-model, was hired by Seagal as an “executive assistant.” Nguyen quickly learned that the job had few if any duties other than giving Seagal massages and letting him feel her up when he wanted. Allegedly, Seagal had also hired two Russian women for the purpose of providing sexual favors 24/7. But when Nguyen wouldn’t perform her “duties,” she was fired.
Nguyen later sued Seagal and his production company, Steamroller Productions, for one million dollars, charging sexual harassment, human trafficking, wrongful dismissal and other charges. Seagal’s attorney released a statement saying the charges were ridiculous and that Nguyen was fired for using “illegal narcotics.”
In July 2010, Nguyen dropped the lawsuit without explanation.
Seagal Hosts Saturday Night Live
There have been many bad hosts on Saturday Night Live, but perhaps the worst of all time is Steven Seagal; in fact, Seagal made the list of the Top 10 Dubious SNL Hosts.
According to the book Live From New York by Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller, back in 1991 when Seagal hosted the show, cast member David Spade said it was the first time he heard talk about replacing the host and doing a cast show.
Here's what former SNL cast members have said about Seagal:
Julia Sweeney: “When we pitched our ideas for Seagal at our Monday meeting, he gave us some of his own sketch ideas. And some of his sketch ideas were so heinous, but so hilariously awful, it was like we were on Candid Camera.
“He had this idea that he’s a therapist and he wanted Victoria Jackson to be his patient who’s just been raped. And the therapist says, ‘You’re going to have to come to me twice a week for like three years,’ because, he said, ‘that’s how therapists freaking are. They’re just trying to get your money.’ And then he says that the psychiatrist tries to have sex with her.”
Tim Meadows: “The biggest problem with Steven Seagal was that he would complain about jokes that he didn’t get, so it was like—you can’t explain something to somebody in German if they don’t speak German. He just wasn’t funny, and he was very critical of the cast and the writing staff. He didn’t realize that you can’t tell somebody they’re stupid on Wednesday and expect them to continue writing for you on Saturday.”
John Leguizamo Slams Seagal
On various radio and TV shows such as Access Hollywood, John Leguizamo has vented steam about former castmate Steven Seagal. Leguizamo claims that while on the set of the movie Executive Decision (1996), Seagal bullied him. Leguizamo said:
"He was supposed to be the master sergeant, and I was right underneath him, his boy. We came to the first day of rehearsals, and he goes, “I’m in command,” and we laughed. I thought he was kidding. Who talks like that? He comes at me and elbows me ... against a brick wall and knocks all the air out of me, and I’m like, ‘why’? I wanted to say how big and fat he is and how he runs like a girl, but I couldn’t because I didn’t have enough air."
Leguizamo continues to fire away at Seagal in his comedy routines, and supposedly, Seagal can’t wait to kick his butt!
More Sexual Harassment From Steven Seagal?
Per a Movieline interview in 1998, actress Jenny McCarthy, often seen on TV shows such as Two and a Half Men, claimed that while auditioning alone with Seagal for a part in the movie Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), Seagal told her to take off her dress.
McCarthy said there were no nude scenes for her part in the movie—she had the script right there with her and wouldn’t have tried out for the part even if it required a nude scene—so she refused to take off her dress.
McCarthy, a former Playboy Playmate of the Year, finally told Seagal that if he wanted to see her nude, he should rent her Playboy video, and then she promptly left the audition.
Seagal claimed such an audition never took place.
Seemingly, Women Have Lined Up to Accuse Seagal of Sexual Misconduct
In a tweet on 11/8/17 actress, Portia de Rossi wrote: My final audition for a Steven Seagal movie took place in his office. He told me how important it was to have chemistry off-screen as he sat me down and unzipped his leather pants. I ran out and called my agent. Unfazed, her agent replied, “Well, I didn’t know if he was your type.”
Also, according to an article on consequencesofsound.net, dated 11/9/17, actress Julianna Margulies said Seagal preferred “private auditions” for all of his movies. At the age of 23, when Margulies arrived at one such audition and discovered no casting director was present, she got nervous; and when Seagal walked into the room flaunting a gun, she fled.
Actress Regina Simons claimed that Seagal invited her to a wrap party after the production of the movie On Deadly Ground in 1993. But Seagal only invited Simons to the party, and then, reportedly, he raped her.
Model Faviola Dadis claimed that Seagal sexually assaulted her when she was 17 back in 2002. Based on this accusation, Dadis has filed a report with the police in Los Angeles.
Trouble in Ukraine
In August 2014, at a concert promoted by the biker gang Night Wolves, Steven Seagal played guitar at a concert in Sevastopol, Ukraine, a country beset by civil war. During this protracted conflict, Russia has expressed the desire to annex Crimea, a move many Europeans and the United States oppose.
During the concert, Seagal told the crowd: "No man has the right to condemn another man for believing what he believes in."
Oh yeah, Steven? Nobody has the right to condemn points of view that may include the advocacy of sexual slavery, human trafficking, child molestation or the use of poison gas in warfare? Although Seagal expressed no strong feelings, pro or con, regarding combatants in the civil war in Ukraine, he seems to think his appearance there will have a positive effect.
At any rate, Steven played blues guitar and sang a little. But is he good or what?
Steven Seagal’s Bromance with Putin
Seagal’s appearance as a blues guitarist at a concert in Sevastopol not withstanding, Ukraine banned him from entering the country for five years because he allegedly “committed socially dangerous actions ... that contradict the interests of maintaining Ukraine's security,” according to a letter produced by the Ukrainian Security Service. It seems Seagal has been a long-time supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin and, in particular, his annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
Moreover, Seagal and Putin share an interest in martial arts, as well as maintaining a macho image worldwide. In November 2016, Putin gave Seagal a Russian passport and said he hopes it would help improve relations between the US and Russia.
In 2023, Putin gave Seagal a Russian Order of Friendship medal. Seemingly grateful for receiving the medal, Seagal declared that he would like to have Putin for a brother and also added that “he (Seagal) is one hundred per cent Russian.” Seagal also criticized the US for publicizing what he calls “disinformation.”
War With Russia and Ukraine
Having friendly relations with both Russia and Ukraine, it would probably be hard to figure which country Seagal favors in the war. In a Fox News Flash dated in February 2022, he said:
"Most of us have friends and family in Russia and Ukraine. I look at both as one family and really believe it is an outside entity spending huge sums of money on propaganda to provoke the two countries to be at odds with each other. My prayers are that both countries will come to a positive, peaceful resolution where we can live and thrive together in peace."
Jerk or Not?
Well, what kind of person is Steven Seagal? If the aforementioned allegations or complaints have any basis in fact, then perhaps Steven Seagal really is a jerk, bully or a-hole. At any rate, the public will have to decide, not the author of this article.

What puzzles me is why would he further sully his reputation chumming around with Vladimir Putin? I've been going to Ukraine every year since the Maidan Revolution as a humanitarian volunteer helping with the internally displaced citizens driven from the Ukrainian Donbass region where the "Russian Separatists" are making war on any citizens living there who don't want to be a part of the Russian Federation. These Russian Separatists are encouraged and armed by the Russian Federation.

The man is simply a human, some are more imperfect than others, but it is fair to say he isn't the most charismatic man on national television. However is it just to make the allegation that he is the rudest, and meanest person in the holly wood production? No, because I can name at least 10 people in the holly wood production with more abnormal social behaviors and rude demeanors then the man Steven Seagal, he poses an intimidating person for the reason that he may have had poor neurological development in his younger stages of learning how to trust through possible abusive behaviors in his younger years, which would explain his cold approach and protective stance against people in general; and he could very well be on the spectrum (such as but is not limited to: Aspergers, Mild Autism, High Functioning, and ADD). His background in martial arts even exhibits his want for self-protection and his large size gives him control and power over his physical barriers, which is why he is likely proficient in these areas of self-defense. His acting cannot be dragged or held against him as he played an aggressive, intense, large, and highly trained character in his movies, and his role does not contain high drama for that reason, this also may have been his personality originally based on traumatic events from his past, or a series of influences where he decided to be the pragmatic, and socially straight forward person that he is; which is why his role may have been easy or natural (personified) to you. Considering his perspective for a minute, he probably liked the idea of his character being seen as tough, put together, disciplined, and important as this developed more of who he was. So, taking into account these factors, he is obviously not the average person on a social, societal, mental, or physical level, but in conclusion, he is not the biggest jerk in holly wood, he is just a man with choices that vary greatly from the majority of the populi, and provides a protected (not mean) demeanor. His opinions on fighters also not credible, but then again, he is not Ben Shapiro or a well-spoken scholar with well-researched facts, he is an actor/martial artists whose seems to seek protection, rather than whats ideal, or true to us.

IN THE 90's I SOLD A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM TO ONE OF SEAGAL'S STUNT DOUBLES. AT THE TIME SEAGAL WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ACTION ACTORS. THE STUNT DOUBLE TOLD ME THAT SEAGAL WAS A REAL ASSHOLE IN PERSON AND TRIED TO PERSONIFY HIS MOVIE ROLES IN REAL LIFE!

This bullying and harrasment is what I would expect from Seagal, who I admired in that early 90's phase. Now, totally opposite. He's the worst actor, I've ever seen in my life, and why he's still acting in films, to me, is one isolated enigma.

I have always like and respected Steven Seagal. I studied Aikido myself for several years and obtained a black belt. I studied Traditional Aikido. Steven Seagal is using a combat version of it which is more aggressive and he definitely is more offensive then usually found in Traditional Aikido. I also have a black belt in Taekwondo and I think the Aikido is a lot more fun! Steven Seagal, like most people who come into a lot of money can't deal with it in their minds and they change. Most Aikido dojos are small and are barely making a profit, but it's the love for real Aikido that keeps them going. Personally, since I've studied Taekwondo, I think Chuck Norris could have done a real number on Seagal when chuck was in his prime years. Remember, he actually remained the Champion for many years. And, Chuck Norris was really good, Another man who I think would completely floor Steven Seagal is George Forman. Even now at his age, I would put George Forman up against just about anybody. The late great Bruno Samartino would have won over Seagal and would probably beat Forman as well, but that would be a close one. Bruno was the real thing, Nothing was fake with him.
Brian Eggiman on April 06, 2018:
For Steven not to show respect to Jean Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris is too stupid. They competed for their accomplishments in martial arts. Jean Claude had years of full contact. I haven't read anything with Steven ever competing full contact. I heard his interviews online. Sounds like he is so full of himself. I bet money Jean Claude could of kicked his butt back in the day, and today. no problem. I'll never watch any of his old movies again.

More than two years ago I saw how bad he is as an actor,he is so fat that he can't even do more than walking and holding a gun, when he fights he moves only one hand or one leg and compensate with moving the camera or taking very short shots to prevent us seeing the truth about his handicaps.
I don't like him as an actor and I feel bad for wasting one hour of my time watching that movie.
I don't know why he continues making d-class movies in spite of being a fast food testimonial.
Shame on him.

I can't stand arrogance from anyone.
He comes across as arrogant and I simply have no tolerance for that behavior.
I firmly believe the sexual harassment accusations against/towards him are accurate and I really hope that this leads to criminal charges.
I want to see him do prison time and/or at the very least be stripped of every single dime he's ever made, in an effective civil case.
JamesMullins on October 03, 2017:
I recall my martial arts instructor telling us Seagal was arrogant. I now understand why.
I think anyone who'd advocate Russia's annexing Crimea and supplying arms and insurgents to take over territory of the sovereign nation of Ukraine has lost their moral compass.
I am suggesting we can and should pay attention to data as it's presented to us by others as they may be in possession of better data than we are. People generally have a hard time hiding their true feelings about others over time, so if you hear common themes from people close to the person in whose character you're interested, pay attention. You're almost certainly hearing the truth.
Personality is easy to read. We judge people to be funny, extroverted, energetic, optimistic and confident as well as overly serious, lazy, negative, and shy—if not upon first meeting them, then shortly thereafter.
Character, on the other hand, takes far longer to puzzle out. It includes traits that reveal themselves only in specific—and often uncommon—circumstances, traits like honesty, virtue, and kindliness. Character traits, as opposed to personality traits, are based on beliefs (e.g., that honesty and treating others well is important—or not), and though beliefs can be changed, it's far harder than most realize.
The problem in forming judgments about a person's suitability for important roles in our lives (employee, friend, lover, spouse) is that we all have a natural ability for observing attractive personality traits and manufacturing out of them the presence of positive character traits (that is, if someone is outgoing, confident, and fun we're more likely to think they're honest, moral, and kind), but we could be mistaken and that assumption often gets us into trouble.
We unconsciously tend to connect personality to character for two main reasons: we want to like people we already like, and the most reliable way to assess a person's character is laborious and time consuming. (We actually need to observe people in character-challenging situations in order to make reliable deductions about their character. For example, if we observe someone lie easily, we can be reasonably certain from even just one instance that they've done so in the past and will do so again in the future, as the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.)
This is because the beliefs that drive us to do things like lie easily, or tell the truth, are present in us at all times. They may remain "dormant" until circumstances stir them up in such a way that they motivate observable action, but they're rarely hidden away deliberately. Which begs the question: might there be a way to glimpse such beliefs without waiting for circumstances to put them on full display?
In a word—yes. Not so much by speaking directly with people whose character you're trying to uncover, but by speaking with people who know the people whose character you're trying to uncover. This is why, for example, wise prospective employers always call references.
You can apply this process to friends and potential mates as well.

He pretends to be a cop. I have a friend that is a fan of his for some reason. He saw lawman and laughed, because he said he does a few direct to DVD movies per year. So the whole lawman show was a publicity ploy. If you watch any of those episodes. The cops sometimes seem starstruck. Like they are just meeting him for the first time. Also, the show had him as a deputy in Louisiana not Arizona.
It kinda reminds me of Elvis. They gave him a badge and he thought he was a cop. He spoke out against drugs. Yet like Michael Jackson had doctors write scripts for Dilaudid and cocaine for sore throats. If you don't believe me. Look it up. He was given speed in the military and moved on from there. Sad that the government thinks weed is more dangerous then coke.

In the world of movie stars the lights are extremely bright but the intellectual residence are curiously absent.

i think steven seagal is really an extraordinary guy. for me one thing is obvious. hollywood is mafia. most actors in hollywood like george clooney, brad pitt, decaprio, johnny depp, meryl streep, and so on became big just due to capitalism. all of them are stupid.if even steven seagal doesn't be a big actor but he is one the most biggest martial arts and i personally think the very early fimls of seagal were very meaningful with political contents like above the law, hard to kill and some other but i accept that steven's films in almost 2000 until now have no any excitement like his early movies.in the end i found steven is a great guy,a big martial art, and a real humanitarian. most actors in hollywood are nothing but unfortunately mediums make them idol that of course they are not indeed.
