I Was A 70s Go Go Dancer!

70s Disco Go Go dancer

Time for a change, and what a change it was!

I was 17 years old when I became a Go Go Dancer. I had just started going to nightclubs. 16 if you count the sneaking out with my friends and 'accidently' forgetting what the time was, while rolling in at half three in the morning!

Was I a wild child? I don't like to think so, but yep pretty much! After school I decided to totally change my image. I had been bullied, picked on and my life had been made hell, so when I put that horrible place behind me I went slightly nuts. But in a good way.

At 17 I started dyeing my hair. Its always been dark, but I went blond and stayed blond. Right up to the present day. Its probably gone slightly grey now, but who knows? lol! That blond dye is my friend, and like all friends it stays by my side.

By the time I was 17 I had made friends with a girl called Jenny. My mum took one look at her and said 'Out the door'! She knew her type. So did I but it excited me, I wanted to be like that.

So the change began.

Dance Little Lady Dance!

Go Go Dancer 70s

Go Go Dancer 70s

A walk on the wild side!

I had recently started work, so I used to meet Jenny in the dinner hour, then go back to her place after work. My mum knew, but she was wise enough not to push it. By telling me not to see her, it would have made me stick in my heels and not let go. So she kept quiet.

Jenny was a doer. She did everything, from taking the wrong stuff, to having 'relationships' with lots of guys. She was a year older than me, but it seemed like ten years older.

She told me that she danced for a living. I was so innocent I didn't know what that meant. I kept away from the hard stuff, never took it. And my boyfriends were an innocent play of being grown up at that stage.

One day she said Tom the DJ was looking for dancers to help with his disco. I just presumed she meant dancing with the crowd. Little did I know it meant getting on a small stage and shaking your butt to the loud music. But I thought, Hell why not?

So on that first Friday night, we got on the bus and headed off to the gig in the next town.

Time to Go Go!

Its was a huge nightclub. The mirror ball on the ceiling was beautiful, reflecting the lights onto the crowd, and the music was thumping. Tom had already set up and the crowd was just beginning to get started. Drinking and dancing, flirting and just having a good time.

I noticed that there were two little stages. Each one was on the right and left of the sound system where Tom was playing the records.

We had been told to 'Wear something appropriate'. Jenny had taken one look at my jeans and sweater shook her head and said, 'Oh no'. Grabbed a revealing top and threw it at me. The jeans stayed on. This time.

I was so nervous! I scooted over to the stage and jumped up. The music started playing and I started swaying. Soon the music took over and me and Jenny were going for it!

Soon there was a break in the music and Tom shouted, 'Come on down girls and go get 'em'!

So we swayed through the crowd looking for the best male dancers, grabbing this one, flirting with that one and so on.

Soon we grabbed a few, and the music changed to slow. I felt myself being swept up by a good looking guy and the dance took over.

Then back came the disco music and we were back on that stage.

My Party Piece Go Go Dance Music!

Too conservative? Nah I don't think so!

After the music had stopped, and it was time to go home I jumped off that stage and ran over to Jenny.

'Well?' She said. 'I love it' I replied.

This was the beginning. We went on to do six more nightclubs, and a couple of local town halls.

There was some hilarious moments as you can imagine!

At one time we had to do a local job down the town hall. It was the Young Conservative Political Debate Night Disco! Phew what a mouthful!

I remember thinking, 'Oh this is going to be fun'! Loads of posh toffs trying to dance while clutching their handbags and trying to be above the rest of us!

When we got there it was just that! They were all sat round the tables at the end of the room, staring down their noses at each other.

Tom had already set up so when the music started me and Jenny stood of to one side, to make sure that, Toms words not mine...'They can get relaxed a bit' Before we hit the stage.

Me and Jenny both knew the real reason! We were going to scare the hell out of them when we got up on that stage with our mini skirts, skimpy tops and knee high boots! Ha!

Love this one! Bit early, 1960s but very similar.Only in the 70s it was much wilder!

Oh Those Boots!

Go Go Dancer boots

Go Go Dancer boots

Causing a riot!

Soon they were bopping to the music, hair swirling with bows all tied neatly at the back, and the guys with their tux all dapper and ship shape.

Then we were called up. Tom decided to play our 'Party Piece'! LOL!

Hawkwind Silver Machine! YeeHaw!

The music started to thump and get louder and louder. We started to girate and sway, then as one, we both got on our knees and started hair swirling, and swaying to that music! The music takes ya, boy does it!

My hair was long, so was Jenny's so you can imagine the impact! Low tops getting lower, mini skirts and swirling hair. Boy did we give it some!

Then the music started to fade away and we slowly stood up. To silence.

We looked out at the dance floor. The girls were sitting on their seats by the tables, looking so prigging prim it was beyond belief, and the guys? Well lets just say that if their jaws got any lower the would have been scooping up floor dust!

Then the stampede started!

Tom put the next record on and every, and I mean every single guy dived for the stage to dance with us! It was madness!

Tom was yelling by this time. 'Guys take it easy, you are supposed to be dancing with the other girls'!

it took us ten whole minutes to escape the clutches of the sweaty spotty teenage boys. Let me tell ya, I needed a stiff drink after that! lol!

Tom just pointed at the door and mouthed 'Go, go out now, before it gets nasty'!

We belted for the doors, laughing our heads off!

And when we got outside we just looked at each other and collapsed with more laughter.

What a night!

How To Go Go Modern Style! (Start 1 min 30)

Onwards and upwards!

We only did a few more after that. Tom decided to throw in his decks so to speak, and me and Jenny had a huge argument.

She decided that I was a 'goody goody' not sleeping around and found another girl who was more 'appropriate'.

So that was the end of that. I missed it, but that was okay. I met up with other friends and became a Punk Rocker......but that's another story!

Get up and Go!

So if you want to have a go at Go Go dancing why not give it a try? You don't have to jump on a stage in the middle of a nightclub, or take your clothes of in public, just give it a try at home, its great fun, and you will lose those lbs in no time.

And the good thing is, you don't have to be a great dancer behind closed doors, just swing your arms, shake your tush and go for it!

Here's the video, now get dancing!

You Go Go Girl!

Keisha Hunter from Kingston, Jamaica on May 08, 2015:

What an exciting hub! I always say that I would be a wild(er) child, had I been able to dance. These days arent as innocent though.

I admire gals who do this type of dance, but I am much too conservative. I like to dance around the house when I'm cleaning, but I'd be embarrassed if anyone ever saw me!

dance your way to glory

Nell Rose (author) from England on February 02, 2015:

Hi poetry lol! yes it could well be a mating dance! they were fun days! I loved it, an thanks so much for reading, nell

poetryman6969 on February 01, 2015:

They tell me there is such a thing as "interpretative dance". Perhaps go-go dance was vigorous interpretation of a mating dance? Or maybe I am thinking of the fembots on that The Spy Who Shagged me serious of flicks:

Austin Powers.

Nell Rose (author) from England on January 20, 2015:

Hi Ann, I did ballroom dancing once many years ago, I absolutely loved it! nice to dance with a guy who knew what he was doing! lol! thanks so much for reading, and yes Theresa's hub was amazing wasn't it? nell

Ann Carr from SW England on January 20, 2015:

I love this! Takes your breath away just like the dancing! I loved 'Silver Machine' too, such energy.

I also loved/love dancing. It's something in the soul, I think, that never goes away. It lifts my mood and is such good exercise too - can't lose!

I went on a cruise with a friend a year or so ago and they had ballroom dancing lessons; that was amazing too. How lovely it is to feel graceful on the dance floor (not sure if I really was, though).

I'd recommend dancing to anyone; instant pick-you-up, fun, exercise, you name it.

Great hub, Nell. Don't know how I missed it but got it through Theresa's latest hub - she's done a great job of linking us all!

Ann

Nadine May from Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa on October 20, 2014:

Wow you did live a wild live Nell. Compared to you I was a goody- two- shoes . Ever heard of that expression? I met my first husband at 17, got married at 19 and had two children directly after. Never any time to go dancing. My first husband of 33 years did not dance at all. After reading your post my comment would be, be glad you did all these fun things.

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 16, 2014:

Hi Jo, have you published it? I will come over and take a look, and good for you for dancing round that house! lol!

What a great hub Nell;it brought back so many wonderful memories. While I was never a hot pants girl I used to live in my jeans and fringed leather jacket and loved dancing the night away at the local dscos in the village or Memorial Halls much to my children's laughter.

"Fancy having discos in a hall!!"

Great times and I share this hub onto my FB page A brand new dawn.

Lots of love from Wales Nell.

Great to be back by the way .

Eddy.

I remember how popular gogo boots were when I was in high school. You brought good memories of those days. You certainly have led an exciting life, but then I expect nothing less from you, Nell.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on October 06, 2014:

You have had such a fun and interesting life Nell...great memories. I must admit I used to like going to clubs and watch the go go girls...this hub was a fun read. Voted up.

Alastar Packer from North Carolina on October 05, 2014:

Concerning what you posted on the Backstock's hub, and if you have Netflix, Nell, check-out Hillbilly Blood. Those people still do it like their ancestors did for the most part. Place called Cold Mountain, NC, not 50 or 60 west of me as the crow flies.

Beth Perry from Tennesee on October 05, 2014:

Nell, I don't normally approve of anyone listening to Punk music, but if it saved you from the depths of depravity called Disco, then I suppose you're a little closer to redemption. However, I will still turn on my black bulb, turn on the Led Zep and pray to a poster of Gene Simmons for the salvation of your immortal soul. My poor, misdirected, naïve Nell. Sigh.

Fun article to read though :)

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 05, 2014:

HI rebekah, I danced on a few tables too, as well as the other type! lol! mind you that was when I had a few drinks! fell off once, but we won't go there! Haha! thanks for telling me about the link, I will check it out, nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 05, 2014:

Hi Genee, lol! great minds think alike! it was pretty innocent really, and when you are young its just dancing, but good for you for wearing those hot pants!

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 05, 2014:

thanks for reading pras, great to see you!

rebekahELLE from Tampa Bay on October 05, 2014:

Oh, Nell, what a fun hub! Love the story and the videos. I remember times when I really felt like dancing on tables, but never had the nerve to do it. But I had a good time and saw lots of bands in my younger days. I still dance a lot at home just for fun. I've tried to dance like Jenia, but it's harder than it looks!! Thanks for sharing such a great time from your past. Dance on! (the last video is disabled here on HP)

Joanna McKenna from Central Oklahoma on October 05, 2014:

Nell, somehow I'm NOT surprised to learn you were a "wild child", albeit (thankfully) of the "goody goody" variety! My first real foray into cocktail waitressing was in the mid 70s, shortly before pubs in my backwater hometown replaced go-go dancers with live bands. At the time, I had waist-length hair, legs that went on "forever", and my parents nearly disowned me because my work attire was hot pants and knee-high boots. And although I was constantly urged to take to the stage, sashaying between tables with a full tray of drinks was the closest I EVER wanted to get to shaking my booty in public, so bravo to you that you had the nerve to go "all the way" so to speak!

Funny, though, that you did this hub right when I thought I'd have to explain go-go dancing in a new hub about a haunted pub! Now I can just link add a link to this hub. Thanks! ;D

prasetio30 from malang-indonesia on October 04, 2014:

Wow....I really entertained by reading this hub. Both video and pictures. Good job, Nell. Thanks for writing and sharing with us. Voted up as always (beautiful, useful, awesome, interesting)

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 04, 2014:

Hi Linda, LOL! yes I was a bad girl back then! funnily enough in my 30s I went through another bad girl stage! long story! I should write a book, 50 shades of grey have nothing on me! Haha!

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on October 04, 2014:

That was one great night for you and what dancing and music! You rocked the whole thing! Enjoyed the read!

Faith Reaper from southern USA on October 04, 2014:

Hahaha you go girl!!! Or should I say Go Go Girl ... What a hoot ... I loved this and I do remember the Go Go dancer days when I was a pre-teen and I even had a pair of white Go Go boots and we would dance out in our driveway LOL. Nancy Sinatra and her song, "Those boots were made for Walking" ... was our inspiration at the time.

Thank you for sharing this part of your life, and I do hope you tell your punk rocker days in a hub for all to enjoy too.

"Oh this is going to be fun" is spot on with this one, nell. Would never have thought it of you but you were a bit of a wild child...like me. Too bad there were no video rec or cells back then, I know you'd put it up for our delight! Btw, nell, your old chap Billy Idol has his bio coming:)

Well I never (shock, horror, attack of the collywobbles)! Still, I suppose it's better than some fellas getting themselves up to look like the Pelvis (most aren't convincing).

Too busy trying to scrape a living meself. I did have a spell working on the mixing console with a Blues band in a pub on Putney High Street, and taking photographs of a young band for a workmate of mine who saw himself as a promo man. Even went to a sound studio in Wanstead with them, taking pictures of them recording and relaxing after cuts.

I had a mortgage to pay for after that, a young family and so on.

Time to be sensible.

Hi Ruby, lol! oh yes the Bee Gees! how brilliant were they back then? oh bring back disco! thanks as always, nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 03, 2014:

Hi Rhonda, it was amazing wasn't it? I think it was the atmosphere of that time, crowds mirror ball on the ceiling, and disco music, so much better than the rubbish today, they have lost the atmosphere!
