About the film
Hubie Dubois, played by Adam Sandler, lives in Salem, Massachusetts. He works in a delicatessen. But during Halloween, he is the official Halloween Helper, where he helps monitor the city. The trouble is, Hubie is the butt of everyone's jokes and has a lot of practical jokes played on him from the other residents of Salem. He lives with his mother, who loves her son unconditionally and always worries about him, which is only natural.
Soon after meeting his new neighbour, Walter, there are reports that there are strange noises coming from Walter's place. It is up to Hubie as the Halloween Helper to prove to the Police and residents of Salem that something very untoward is going on in the town. It is worth noting that near the beginning of the film we learn how Richie Hartman has escaped form a psychiatric ward and is on the loose. Naturally, this worries the Police and the people of Salem. So when people start mysteriously disappearing, it's up to Hubie to help and find out what's going on. The police naturally assume it's Richie that's the culprit, but as the film goes on, things take a very unexpected twist, as the viewers will see towards the end of the film.
There's also a nice little sub-plot to the story where we learn that Violet Valentine has a crush on Hubie, despite everyone else taking the mickey out of him and teasing him. So this is a nice addition to the film.
I've never really been a big fan of Adam Sandler, though I know he's a very good actor. But this film surprised me. I found myself quite enjoying it. It's certainly not a scary film, but is a light-hearted film which, I believe, has a hidden message behind it. Hubie does, indeed, has a very big heart and works hard in the delicatessen. And with him being the annual Halloween Helper, it goes to show that all he wants to do is help people and keep them safe and to have a good time. Of course, this leads to people ridiculing and teasing him, which makes me feel all the more sorry for him. His mother worries about him constantly and always looks out for him.
So when people in Salem start disappearing, folk don't really take him seriously. But they have to in the end. The film did have a surprising ending for me. Not one that I expected anyway. Plus, we see that Hubie has an admirer by the name of Violet Valentine, so it's interesting seeing this aspect of the film when everyone else, other than his mother, ridicules and teases him. Hubie is a character that really isn't much of a bright spark, but he does have a good heart at the end of the day. Which is why I think there is a message in this film. Although it's a light-hearted film, I think it does tell us that we should respect other people and not make fun of others.
This film is available to watch on Netflix.
