How To Forget About A Horror Movie

Let's face it. The sad truth is that most horror movies these days are forgettable. House of Wax, anyone? The only memorable scene was when Paris Hilton bought it. 2009's Transylmania? What? Did anybody even see House of the Dead? How many Saw movies do we really need before it gets old and tired? (Correct answer: Three.)

Truthfully, the "shock and awe" of horror films has all but worn off. We've pretty much seen it all. Even when movie makers throw some really shocking stuff into their films, it often comes across as trite. If it weren't for movies like Zombieland and The Devil's Rejects, many of us would have given up on the genre long ago.

When you do manage to get lucky enough to find a horror movie that's actually scary with the added bonuses of gory and gruesome, what happens when you can't get those frightening images or situations out of your head? How do you forget about a scary movie?

Wash That Movie Right Out Of Your Head

Here are a few useful tips for forgetting about horror movies:

  • Kittens and puppies - There is nothing nefarious about kittens and puppies. Play with them. Throw them catnip mice (puppies will play with them, it's just not as fun). If you've got one of those little laser lights, cats and dogs will both chase them. When they get all tired and pass out, you'll get your "Awwww" moment and The Evil Dead will soon be forgotten.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants - Watching SpongeBob or any other kiddie cartoon or movie will get you thinking about something other that the decapitations and/or eviscerations that you've just seen. Also recommended: The Smurfs, Scooby Doo (but not the mummy, vampire, werewolf or Creature from the Black Lagoon episodes, for obvious reasons), Animaniacs or even Family Guy.
  • Hakuna Matata - Sing a happy song. Repeatedly. Hakuna Matata will get rid of any lingering fright leftover from The Blair Witch Project. Also try Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy or join hands with your friends and family for a rousing rendition of Kumbaya.
  • YouTube - Watch funny videos. They're guaranteed to make you think about other things, thus getting Freddy Krueger and his wicked fingernails out of your head. Suggestions: Epic Rap Battles of History, Distastrophe Films or search "funny cats."
  • Valium, Ativan, Ambien or Alcohol - Sometimes a scary movie is so scary that we just can't sleep after watching it. In those situations, a little "help" may be required. Please note that I said a little. Drinking a fifth of Jack before bedtime might be fine for now, but you will pay for it in the morning. (I am in no way advocating taking prescription medication that is not prescribed for you. This can get you two to five in an eight by ten and Michael Meyers will be the least of your worries.)

Above all else, remember that it's just a movie. Yes, bad things happen all the time, but the chances of an alien jumping out of your belly and attacking your face while you're simply minding your own business are pretty slim. You are also not likely to ever come face to face with a machete wielding giant in a hockey mask in your lifetime.

If you repeatedly have problems getting your brain on the safe track after watching horror movies, then they are probably not for you. Try Lilo & Stitch, Madagascar or The Lion King instead. Or the Teletubbies, but some of us are more scared of those... things than anything Wes Craven could ever come up with!

Random fact: "Hakuna matata" is awfully close to the Tswana phrase "Ga ke na matata" (g makes an h sound) which literally means "I have no problems." I learned that in Botswana just a few weeks ago!

Great hub and I'd have to agree horror movies don't do much for me anymore. They used to scare me a bit, but today's flicks don't know how to give me the creeps. But if I find one that scares me I'll sing kumbaya and have a "sip" of rum!

I haven't seen 1408 yet, but I did read it. It was pretty dang disturbing! Horror movies can do things to us that we just don't expect. I hope you got even with your husband!

These will come in handy for me... I love horror movies, but I'm also a chicken... lol. Even 1408 lingers with me... but I blame my husband for that. Right after watching it I used the restroom and he waited outside the door so that his face with big eyes what right there.. .I almost peed my pants.. and I had just peed, lol. I think the hakuna matata will work well with me ^_^ That and replace puppy/kittens with giggly baby. Wonderful hub, voted up, funny, useful and shared.

I dig most horror movies, but I'm not really affected by them anymore. You know it's bad when I can sit and watch a slasher flick and MYST (Mystery Science Theater) the heck out of it! I especially recommend Hakuna Matata for those lingering tingles, though!


I don't think I've seen Haunting of Hill House, I'll give it a try. I love Boxers! I had one many years ago and she was the absolute sweetest dog I ever met! I miss her!


I have had my nights where I've slept with the lights on, seriously! I feel your pain!


I have trouble with books sometimes, too. I had to learn not to read zombie apocalypse books before bed!


I hope so. It doesn't help that we tend to watch these movies at night when it's dark!


I can't take credit for the title, it's an Apprenticeship title picked for me by our mentor, but I loved writing the Hub! It was easier for me to be scared by a movie when I was younger. I think I'm a little desensitized to it now. I think the last flick I was actually scared by was Jurassic Park! (No laughing at me!) I agree that the "it could really happen" films can be the scariest!


My brother has been involved with an annual haunted house since he was a teenager. I've been a few times and even helped out one year and, even though I knew what was right around the corner, it scared me, too! It's amazing the tricks our brains play on us! I have seen Sleep Away Camp and you are right!

when it comes to "slasher" films, I am not impressed by them, in a theater setting, however in a haunted house, or fun house type of scenario, I'm f*cked. Images will haunt me for months at a time. I will admit to one movie that seriously messed me up even thirty years later. I remember going to the drive-inn (are there any still left?), and the flick was: "Sleep Away Camp"...I won't spoil the end if anyone reading wants to check it out, but my GAWD!....why?

This is SO awesome and it made me laugh just when I saw the title! I grew up with horror. My mother and older brother were always reading a good horror book, I watched all of the Friday the 13th movies, Nightmare On Elm Street, my mom was always watching that HBO show The Hitch Hiker...just the music would scare me at night. Now....I can't watch any of that stuff.

Funny how I used to love it and grew up with it but in my 20's started to lose interest. Turns my stomach too much. I like to get scared sometimes but not with gore. More like a good supernatural movie or something like that. Watching funny things after is exactly what I do though! lol. Anything cartoon or comedy is the key and like you said always remembering that it's not real.

The ones that always get me are the ones that "could be real." The ones based on serial killers, etc. I always think how there's sick people in the world that have done things like that. That's why I can't watch that stuff anymore. But a good supernatural flick, I'm game.

I definitely get creeped out after watching horror movies! I always think something will manifest in a dark corner of the room, or an evil presence will appear on a blank TV screen. I like your advice...something funny and light definitely gets the creeps out of your head! Interesting and unique topic for a hub!

Still am terrorized by the Haunting of Hill House (the old black and white one.) I no longer go to any scary movies. These are nice ideas. My dog is also a nice comfort when I am feeling stressed. Love my Boxer!

I like these ideas! I'm not usually bothered by horror so much - I love the genre - except for the slasher sub-genre, which I avoid. I have had some things from other film genres bother me, though - I am definitely going to keep this list of suggestions happen next time I pick the wrong movie.
