4 Simple Steps

These are the 4 simple steps to become a wonderful dancer:

  1. Stretch
  2. Explore
  3. Take Classes
  4. Improve

1. Stretch

Being flexible is an important part of being a dancer. You can use videos and stretch tools to assist you. Here are things you should do to become flexible:

  • Be flat in each split. Sit in each one of your splits for 15 minutes each day. You can find videos online with exercises to help you with your splits.
  • Have a flexible back. Practice going into your back bend with the help of a wall. Do back exercises. Having a flexible back is important when dancing. Use videos and stretch tools to help you.
  • Have flexible feet. Stretch your toes daily so that you can point your feet well. Videos online and stretch tools will help.
  • Do warm ups. Before stretching always warm up. Touching your toes, jumping jacks, or sitting in the butterfly stretch are examples of warming up. Online videos are good ways to find successful warm ups.

Below, I have posted several useful tools for stretching. I have also added a few helpful videos.

2. Explore

By explore, I mean get comfortable in your body. When you dance, you show who you are through the way you move. Here are some ways to start getting comfortable when dancing:

  • Dance to some music. Turn on music and just groove to the beat. Try doing some cool moves that go along with the song. Get out of your comfort zone.
  • Make up a dance. When you have gotten used to moving to the beat, watch a few dance performances on youtube and try choreographing your own short dance.

The goal is for you to feel comfortable dancing.

3. Take Classes

Once you have become flexible and comfortable in you body, it is time to get trained.

  • Decide your style. Decide what styles of dance you want to take. Research them and choose what you like the most. There are many styles to choose from, such as: contemporary, ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, etc.
  • Find a studio or academy. Research all of the dance studios in your area. Choose what you like best.
  • Sign up for a class. It doesn't matter how old you are, since it is never late to start dancing. Start with 1 class and sign up for more when you're ready.
  • Pay attention in class. Ask questions and learn.

4. Improve

Once you are taking classes, it is important to use them for your benefit as a dancer.

  • Listen to what the teacher is saying. The teacher is your best resource as a dancer. Listen to what he/she is teaching
  • Ask Questions. If you don't understand something ask for help. Your dance classes are like the classes you took in school.
  • Watch. Watch how other dancers and your teacher are dancing. By watching them, you apply what you see to your movements.
  • Work hard. Don't just watch and listen. You must work hard, as much as you can, to improve. After each class you should be dripping with sweat. It sounds harsh but it's true.
