Piano Lessons

Taking piano lessons has much to do with when the child is interested in playing this musical instrument. We have all heard of geniuses playing the piano as early as age two.

Generally speaking children can be introduced to piano lessons between ages 3-6. As a parent please understand that making a child take piano lessons is not the same as introducing a child to this instrument when they show an interest.

The maturity and the willingness of a young child to take thirty minute lessons with an instructor and to voluntarily practice fifteen to thirty minutes each day is a child who has definite interest in music.

Do not be surprised if the child plays for a year and quits. This is not uncommon as children are exploring and experimenting with different interests during their growing years. The child may want to return to playing the piano at a later date.

Selecting a Piano Instructor

The first instructor is very important as he or she will be the inspiration and mentor to the student. Often times the instructor has much to do with the length of time a child or an adult will be interested in taking piano lessons.

  1. Regardless of whether it is your child or you as an adult taking lessons you will want a teacher who is patient. It takes time to learn the piano and if your instructor is patient you will also be kind to your child and yourself.
  2. Does your teacher enjoy teaching? One can be passionate about their music but a teacher must also be passionate about teaching which demands excellent communication.
  3. A good teacher will want to get to know you. He or She needs to understand your type of personality and how you learn.
  4. Every student has to learn about the black and white keys, sharps and flats, practice scales and chords, and how to read music. Unfortunately, this can be boring. But...if the teacher can introduce songs which you like and that you can learn to play this is wonderful. Now learning to play the piano is fun.
