Gwen Stefani as a Brunette (with Dark/Brown Hair)

Gwen Stefani might have had platinum blonde hair ever since 1995's Just a Girl spearheaded No Doubt's popularity, but her dark eyes, eyebrows, and Italian surname point to a different natural hair color altogether: dark brown.

Yup, Gwen Stefani is actually a brunette. I know, you're shocked. As was I!

In the video for her 2005 single, Cool, Gwen sported locks with a hue much closer to those she was born with--well, at least in those flashback scenes. In fact, the video shows her happily spending time with her beau, her curly dark tresses cascading onto her shoulders, while in later scenes, it suggests her boyfriend traded her in for another brunette when she began bleaching her hair. Come on, Gwen! (Gwen is still married to British rocker, Gavin Rossdale, so I'm assuming her prefers her as a blonde.)

Ironically, in her video, she's probably wearing a wig. She does look more classically beautiful, and, in my opinion, quite a bit younger, too.

A video shot in early 1991 (below), before she attained stardom, shows her with natural, dark-brown hair, and she's a real beauty. Maybe not someone who lives on pirate ships with a coterie of Harajuku girls, but still quite pretty.

Maybe someone will be able to explain why several Italian-American chanteuses - Madonna and Lady Gaga come immediately to mind, but let's not forget Diana DeGarmo, Ani DiFranco, Cyndi Lauper, and Justine Mattera - feel the need to spruce up their appearance with a heavy dose of peroxide. Maybe Italian men just prefer blondes? (Actually, I've been to Italy several times, and I would say that seems to be generally true)

Gwen said that she's had blonde hair since 1994, and she even pays homage to her hair color choice in her 2001 song Platinum Blonde Life. Check out these lyrics: "I want a platinum blonde life, so I keep bleaching out the colors." That, you do, Gwen.

At any rate, since the rule for aging celebrity women is to lighten their hair, not darken it, these pictures might be the last time you'll be able to see Ms Stefani-Rossdale with the hair color God gave her. Enjoy!

I'm part Italian too and find that blonde hair minamlizes my olive green skin tone so I like going blonde. IT has nothing to do with guys' and their preferences. Sometimes people just do what makes them happy. Just like curling their hair or straightening it etc. Also my hair is medium brown so you'd think going darker would be flattering but it ages me about 10 years. I think the pictures of Gwen with darker hair are pretty with blonde she looks stunning. Plenty of fake blondes just look washed out though.

She looks like me with the brown hair, I even have that same red polka dot dress I used to wear for good luck. I never had to bleach my hair to get the guys. She looks years younger with the brown hair, less makeup. Its time for gwen to go back to her roots, the blonde hair at her age now makes her look too brassy&shows her age more sorry but it looks white &that ages you more

I think I like the Brunette better!

I enjoyed watching the video of a younger Gwen Stefani, it was fun to see her as a brunette and I certainly think that her natural color flatters her skin better than the blond hair. I was just reading that men actually prefer brunettes, I am not sure where I read this, and as I am not a man I can't really say. Fun hub!

Interesting hub...I think she is beautiful as either a blonde or a brunette. I also think there is a vast difference between the two in terms of personality. The blonde Gwen always seems to be the perfect age while the brunette Gwen seems really young and I can her being a lot older too by simply changing her hair color. As for the trends of blondes... There are many reasons that come to mind. Under all of those hot lights and dark sets, the blonde still stands out. Shadow work in video might lose the some of the characteristics if the hair were darker. Blonde hair also goes with everything and every kind of accessory and it allows people to be super bold in clothing color and design. Voted up and awesome.

I loved the video . . . adorable! I prefer her as a brunette. Voted up and interesting.

Fun hub! Even though she looks pretty as a brunette, the bleached blond seems to suit her cool, funky personality.

I'm not sure about the Italian woman thing, I tried blond but the "olive" in my skin turned greenish looking quickly with blond hair. My mom's been a bleach blond all her life though, and it actually looks pretty good with her darker skin. I personally like Stefani as a blond, but maybe that's because it's how I'm used to seeing her.

Interesting hub! I remember she had white dreads (dreds?) when they performed at a club I was working at, before they made it big. Voted up.

How strange!!

I do think I'll be hoping for lighter hair as I age, but I want it to be white, not blonde, and I'm going to let that happen on its own. But... WHITE HAIR IS SO COOL!!!

Pollyannalana from US on November 04, 2011:

Very interesting hub.

Camille: I'm with you. I have to say that wig looks pretty healthy! ;)

Maddie: Yes, I guess she's stuck with it now. I read that Lady Gaga had to bleach her hair because her producers thought dark hair would make her look too much like Amy Winehouse.

Maddie Ruud from Oakland, CA on November 03, 2011:

In the 90's, it was fashionable. At this point, it's a matter of personal branding.

Camille Harris from SF Bay Area on November 03, 2011:

I think she looks great as a brunette! Seems much healthier for her hair, too. Oh well. I guess it's true that gentlemen prefer blondes...

Let the debate begin!
