Margaret Minnicks has been an online writer for many years. She writes about various topics including celebrities and entertainment.
A lot of things happened in the finale of Season 4 of Greenleaf that aired on OWN on November 5, 2019. It was the network's 52nd episode of the drama series that left viewers with several new things to wonder about until Season 5 returns next year.
Kerissa and Jacob
Kerissa, played by Kim Hawthorne, confessed her infidelity to Jacob, played by Lamman Rucker, after refusing to be intimate with him. She admits that she has chlamydia given to her by Fernando Amable. Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD). Even though Jacob has cheated on Kerissa several times, he is so furious with her that he orders his wife to move out of the house.
When Kerissa goes to visit Fernando, he gives her information about the deed to the Greenleaf mansion. Viewers learned that Bishop Greenleaf, played by Keith David and Lady Mae, played by Lynn Whitfield, allegedly killed a relative and took the house from her. according to what Fernando told Kerissa.
Grace and an AJ Look-Alike
Grace, played by Merle Dandridge, was praying at her sister Faith's grave when someone looking like AJ, played by Jacob Gibson, showed up to tell her that "everything has an expiration date." Grace had a puzzled look on her face. Viewers have given their opinion about the man. Some say he was a ghost. Some say he was Faith's son and not Grace's. When the man was ready to leave, Grace showed him the gate, and he was seen walking away leaving viewers in suspense.
Surely, the mystery will be explained next year when Greenleaf returns. Until then, people shouldn't insist that their speculation is true. No one knows for sure who the man was. Therefore, the writers succeeded in getting viewers to talk about it.
By the way, where was AJ's father? He said he would move back to Memphis to be near his son. However, Noah, played by Benjamin Patterson, never showed up after his initial meeting with Grace.
Lady Mae and Bob Whitmore
Bob Whitmore, played by Beau Bridges, returns to Calvary. He initially gives Lady Mae some good news about achieving her dream for the church. However, it soon turned to bad news.
Before the episode ended Phil went to visit Charity, and told Lady Mae that what Whitmore told her is now null and void. He advised her to get any of her belonging out of Calvary because the church is going to be demolished.
Charity and Phil
After Phil Demars, played by Sean Blakemore, had delivered the bad news to Lady Mae, he delivered more bad news to Charity, played by Deborah Joy Winans, whom he had recently asked to marry him. Viewers were happy for Charity because she seems to be the underdog on the show even though she makes wrong choices. She betrayed Grace, her own sister, to get closer to Phil.
Phil tells Charity that there is not going to be a wedding because he is going to marry Judee Whitmore. Fans knew immediately that Phil is being forced into the marriage because of a deal made with Bob Whitmore.
Did you know Sean Blakemore who plays Phil Demars also plays Shawn Butler on the ABC daytime drama "General Hospital"? The 52-year-old actor has had a role on the soap opera since January 21, 2011.
Reactions to the Finale
Viewers on social media had a lot to say about Season 4 of Greenleaf and especially the finale. The comments were positive.
One person wrote on Twitter: "Season 4 of Greenleaf came with great acting, unanswered questions, room for extra storylines, a few spin-offs, a lot of drama..."
Someone else tweeted: "Season 4 is definitely one of the best seasons." Another person commented, "Season 4 was everything! Great job."
The general consensus was that "Greenleaf Season 4 finale shocked a lot of fans.
Canceled or Renewed?
Fans will be delighted to know that Greenleaf has been renewed for Season 5. The good news came on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, the same date of Season 4's finale. The premiere date has not been revealed yet. Fans are just glad to know the series has the green light to return.
For a while, fans were worried that the popular drama on OWN might be canceled because there has been a big drop in the Nielsen ratings. There were 3.04 million views in the first season, then down to 1.64 million viewers in the second season, up a bit with1.74 million viewers in the third season and down to only 1.07 million viewers for the fourth season finale.
There is no definite date when Greenleaf will return for Season 5. However, it is speculated that the series will probably return in about eight or nine months from now based on previous premiere dates.
New seasons have returned after that number of months following the finale. Greenleaf has not had a definite pattern like some other shows.
- Season 1 aired on June 21, 2016, with 13 episodes.
- Season 2 aired on March 15, 2017, with 16 episodes.
- Season 3 aired on August 28, 2018, with 13 episodes.
- Season 4 aired on September 3, 2019, with only 10 episodes.
You might have noticed that Season 4 was the shortest season. Even so, it was described as one of the most impressive seasons yet.

I love your show of the Greeleaf
Diana on January 30, 2020:
Two things to consider in the final grave scene, "everything has an expiration date" and the fact that this person appears AT A GRAVE..viewers have just been given the news of the documented data that states that the owner of the estate of the Greenleaf's was killed and the estate taken over illegally..this in itself, would suggest the final blow of the church and the family..And did you notice that all the individual's that GG was praying about, were not in fact, as she stated them to be....

They take to long to bring out every season and that’s why they are loosing viewers
Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on December 28, 2019:
If they follow the pattern of other seasons, it will probably be in the summer of 2020.

They are silent. There is nothing yet on the Internet but it will come.

Susie, Oprah has moved away and her storyline has ended in the series. She may or may not appear for some small role, but it is doubtful.
Susie on December 20, 2019:
I love how the story lines shift from one new revelation to the next. I binge watched them and now am gutted to have to wait so long for season 5. Will Oprah Winfrey be re- appearing in the future?
Keiya on December 09, 2019:
What if “A.J.” was an imposter and the stranger is the real A.j.

Did AJ come back as a new person? Or did he die and came back an angel?

Yes, Manila, I look forward to seeing "Greenleaf" when it returns so we can find out the meaning of the young man in the graveyard. Thanks for reading and commenting.
Manila RoneWells on November 10, 2019:
Left puzzled about the young man who showed up at the graveyard of Faith while GG was there praying. GG surly knew who he was. I am glad to hear that Green Leaf will have a season #5. I’m waiting
