MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM [subtitled]
This highly controversial German film from 1931 is the original tale of lesbian love between teacher and student, detailing a crush that is overwhelmingly intense and unfortunately unrequited...or is it? It's hard to tell whether or not Elizabeth Von Bernburg, the beautiful young teacher and friendly ally to the teenagers at an all-girls boarding school feels the same way about new student Manuela as Manuela does about her. Things take a turn for the worse when Manuela makes the mistake of shouting her love from the rooftops, thereby alerting the stern headmistress. Ultimately, the intensity of her love for Fraulein Von Vernburg sends Manuela over the edge as she threatens to take her own life. Maedchen in Uniform, one of the earliest films to openly discuss homosexuality, was banned worldwide until First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt reversed the decision. At first look it is surprising how candid the filmmakers were about the overtly lesbian scenes; but then you remember how accepted homosexuality was before the Nazi regime took over in the 1940s, and can't help but wonder how much more progressed the fight for equal rights would be had Hitler never come to power.

AIMEE & JAGUAR [subtitled]
One of the most powerful lesbian films of all time, this German release documents the true story of two women who fell in love during World War II. Felice Schragenheim is a Jewish woman living under an assumed name in Nazi Germany when she falls in love with Lilly Wust, the wife of a soldier. Because her husband is off fighting with Hitler's army, Felice ends up moving in with Lilly and a tender, passionate love affair ensues. Felice becomes like a second mother to Lilly's four young sons, and even after she reveals to Lilly that she is Jewish the two women continue to spend beautiful summer days bike riding to the lake where they make love on a blanket and endlessly photograph themselves together. And all this set against the backdrop of a raging war, destroying the neighboring cities and coming closer and closer to their home in Berlin.

MY SUMMER OF LOVE
Set in the present-day Irish countryside, this film documents the passionate and hysterical attraction that evolves between dowdy, red-haired Mona and sexy, alluring Tamsin (played by Emily Blunt, who you may recognize from "The Devil Wears Prada".) Tamsin is practically a princess, living in a lush country mansion near the water while Mona resides in the apartment above a pub she and her brother used to own before he renounced his criminal ways and found Christ. The two girls are complete opposites yet something draws them together, and it is quite clear that Mona would give anything to be with Tamsin in every way. They are blissful and carefree until Mona begins to discover that Tamsin isn't exactly what she seems to be, and has been lying the entire time about a number of very important facts.

It is believed that goldfish have very short memory spans, forgetting promises as soon as they're made, breaking vows and never grasping the lessons they learn time and time again. When it comes to cheating, humans are the same in this regard. This movie charts the messy love triangle of a group of people in Dublin, Ireland. After Clara spots her boyfriend making out with another woman, she heads for the local lesbian bar to get some action of her own. Bed-hopping and boundary-blurring ensues, until feelings begin to develop and drastic decisions must be made.

These movies are great, I will try to look for them! I'm particularly curious with Maedchen in Uniform - you say 1931?! The only movies with similar themes that I've seen are Kissing Jessica Stein, Bound and Heavenly Creatures. Great hub! I simply love movies! :D
