30 Great Songs They Don't Play On 24/7 Christmas Stations

I was that loner kid who read comics when everyone else was playing, listened to the B-sides, watched old movies ... And wrote in spirals

Marvin Sapp featuring Commissioned - What Child Is This

1. What Child Is This - Marvin Sapp feat Commissioned

-- Marvin Sapp - Christmas Card (Sony Legacy, 2013)

Like JOHNNY GILL joining NEW EDITION, that's how I viewed Bishop Sapp joining the Urban Gospel Supergroup, COMMISSIONED. And just like Gill gave a shot in the arm to his group by featuring them on his hit, "This One's For Me & You" ... Oh what a delight for Commissioned fans to find them featured on this highly enjoyable rendering of a holiday classic.

2. Christmas All Over The World - New Edition

3. Christmas Time Is Here - Toni Braxton

-- Toni Braxton - Snowflakes (Arista, 2001)

Of course, the only version of this song that ever meant anything to me was the one featured on the Charlie Brown Christmas special by VINCE GUARALDI. However, something about the lush cover, soaking in Braxton's sultry vocals, leaves me breathless. Akin to being wrapped in your favorite duvet on a 32 degree night.

4. I Know That My Redeemer Liveth - Tevin Campbell

5. Who Would Imagine A King - Whitney Houston

9. Silent Night (1980) - The Temptations

-- The Temptations - Give Love At Christmas (Motown, 1980)

Not to be confused by the standard 2:26 version from their 1970 album, "The Temptations Christmas Card, led by original member, EDDIE KENDRICKS. No, this horse of a different color clocks in at 6:06. It is featured on their second holiday album and led by the dynamic Mr. Glenn Leonard. A staple of R&B radio for decades, once you hear this, it'll spoil you for any other version.

10. Christmas Just Ain't Christmas - The O'Jays

Kierra Sheard/Chrisette Michelle - Angels We Have Heard On High

Stevie Wonder, Take 6 - O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion

11. The First Noel - Tim Miner

-- Christmas - Various Artists (Sparrow Records, 1988)

If you're listening to this tune and thinking, "Hey ... That sounds like BRIAN MCKNIGHT ...", please let me set you straight on the matter.

On the Brian McKnight version, the crooner shares vocals with his brother, CLAUDE MCKNIGHT of TAKE 6 fame and this gentleman, Mr. TIM MINER.

Tim's version was released in 1988 -- ten years before Brian's. And while he spent most of his career writing and producing for Christian artists (AL GREEN, DELEON SHEFFIELD, NICOLE C MULLEN), he managed to inspire Mr. McKnight and is hailed as one of his many influences.

12. O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion - Stevie Wonder/Take 6

India Arie and Joe Sample featuring Brandy

16. Silent Night - India Arie/Brandy

-- India Arie/Joe Sample - Christmas With Friends (Motown, 2015)

Oh ... my ... gosh .... The combination of these two husky-yet-silky voiced wonders ... Both of them have vocals that can melt butter ... Not to mention the coldest of hearts ... Soothing in the darkest of days ... And together ....Oh my gosh ... Too much ... Must lay down ...

17. Zat You Santa Clause - Louis Armstrong

18. Everybody Sing A Christmas Song - Jon Gibson

This guy ... The blue-eyed STEVIE WONDER ... Nuff said.

30. Every Year, Every Christmas - Luther Vandross

-- Luther Vandross - This Is Christmas (Epic, 1995)

Written by the late, great crooner and Pop favorite and buddy, RICHARD MARX, this is one of those tunes ... One of those songs that just makes you feel like Christmas all over your body. The kind of song that makes you sway and pop your fingers as you push your shopping cart through the store ... What ...? Just me ...? Oh ....
