Top 20 Best Comedy Movies of Govinda
Govinda movies are a great mixture of comedy, and action. This article is a guide to the greatest Govinda movies ever made.
A major part of his career is dedicated to comedy and every movie in that genre was a box office super hit or semi-hit. His association with David Dhawan is well-known. And when he chose to make a comeback after a forgetful and regretful stint at politics, he connected again with David Dhawan for Partner co-starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.
Movies such as Coolie No. 1, Raja Babu, Dulhe Raja make the cut whereas others such Aunty No. 1 and Sandwich, though funny, don't get a place. This of course my opinion and you are welcome to disagree!
Below are the top 20 best comedy films of Govinda listed alphabetically.

1. Aankhen
I can't remember how many times I've watched this one, and I still can't get enough of it. Each and every scene from the movie is wonderfully crafted with an intelligent script and performances.
Talking of performances, how can you forget the role of Kader Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Raj Babbar, or even Raja Murad. And Bajrangi (the monkey) driving a car was the first of its kind for a Bollywood film.
2. Akhiyon Se Goli Maare
The most comic scene of this movie is the encounter between Razak Khan (Faiyaz Takker) and Govinda (Bobdey Dada). Also the scenes involving Johnny Lever where he teaches Govinda to become a Bhai are quite funny.
Govinda's language of delivering dialogues as a Dada also found many a admirers. Shakti's role is equally good with his natural timing and grace of doing slapstick comedy.
Faiyaz Takkar Pahelwan!
3. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan
Before his famous partnership with Sanjay Dutt he had a great camaraderie and chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan. The association before this we saw in the movie Hum. But this one turned out to be more acceptable in terms of box office collection.
This movie also marks the return of Mr. Bachchan in the industry at a time when his career was going down the hill. We all know what happened after KBC which got Bachchan back in the reckoning with more appreciation.
4. Bhagam Bhag
Bhagam Bhagam is one movie where even the most saddest person would have to laugh. I am not the kind who laughs at any and every joke. But this surely made me laugh and got flat on the floor many times throughout the two and half hours.
Must say Govinda makes other stars like Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal look smaller by his sweet persona and the comic aura.
5. Coolie No. 1
The many "No.1's" that Govinda did in his career, to me Coolie No. 1 is by far the best. He plays the role of a Coolie who is true to his belief and won't compromise. But the beauty of Karishma makes the street side Coolie to make believe Kadar Khan (father of Karishma) a Raja with hordes of property and cash.
When once Shadiram Gharjode (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) is humiliated by Hoshiyar Chand (Kadar Khan) he takes on himself to teach Hoshiyar Chand a lesson. He does so by employing Raju coolie and getting him married to Malti the beautiful daughter of Hoshiyar Chand.
6. Deewana Mastana
Deewana Mastana is one of the best comedy movies ever made in Hindi cinema. Each and every character is sketched with absolute thought and must say every actor does justice to their role.
Govinda's character as Bunnu, Anil Kapoor's role as Raja and the role of Satish Kaushik as Papu Pager are my favorite. And not to forget Johny Lever as Gafoor bhai for which he got Filmfare award for best comedian. I welcome this award but each and every actor deserves one for their rib-tickling performances.
Pappu Pager And The Supari Scene
Main Pappu Pager bol rela hoon..Ae jhantule jhatak, jyada na matak..Aur meri baat gale mein satak...Bunnu mobile mera chota bhai hainga aur main uska mota bhai Pappu Pager line pe hu...Ay Mutton k chilke...Ay intoduction lena band kar nahi to mouthpiece me daal ke receiver se nikal ke kanpati me ghusa dalunga..alti palti ho jayenga!!!
Aando aando appointment hai aando...Aaja re aaja lehrake aaja!
Ay Tamatar ke aakhri daane!
— Pappu Pager Dialogues
7. Kunwara
Another one of my favorites from Govinda is Kunwara. Released in 2000 opposite Urmila Matondkar when in that time Govinda was only seen with Karishma and Raveena.
I like this not just because of Govinda but all the more for the funny act by Johnny Lever. I bet you won't stop laughing watching the scene where they bring him (rather his dead body) to hide in the hotel. The entire sequence is nonsensical but hilarious.
8. Dulhe Raja
This super hit comedy film takes Govinda's stardom to a different level.
This was a time when he gave a run for the money to the traditional comic actors. He was getting synonymous with comedy.
The tussle between Kadar Khan and Govinda is great fun to watch. From the start when the director says "Action" till the final "pack-up" this is one great comedy.
Some Funny Scenes
9. Hadh Kar Di Aapne
I remember this movie was publicized as it has 13-14 duplicates of Govinda. And the media got crazy highlighting that only one aspect that it has so many Govindas. But when the movie released everybody came to know that these were just short 30-60 second roles which were included just to add some comedy.
The story of the movie is plain simple where lead actors go on a trip and fall in love only after a brief altercation. The music is good and one song that stands out is an heartbreak song known as Oye Raju.
One of The Best Sad Songs - Oye Raju - Anand Raj Anand's Voice
10. Haseena Maan Jayegi
Two rich spoiled brats have nothing to do except enjoying making fun of others and spending the hard-earned money of their father.
They find it nothing wrong in fixing their father's marriage for a dowry of 1 lakh rupees. But all these mischieves break the patience of Amirchand (their father played by Kadar Khan) and he wants them to get serious in life. For which he cracks the whip and ask them to join their business. What happens after that is no mystery, but still you have to watch to know more.
11. Hero No. 1
For this one, even if the second part is directly borrowed from the old movie Bawarchi, it fits well in to the script. The first part is how the lead actors go on a foreign trip and how they get to know each other.
The transition of a person having every comfort at arm's length to a family servant is amazing portrayed. It follows the age old principle of doing whatever to get love.
12. Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain
I remember watching it twice at a cinema, first with our family and the second time all alone. This was a time I was getting into adolescence and was doing things on my own. And I watched this movie alone.
Govinda's role of a simpleton villager where his real parents keep them to ward-off a mysterious disease. And when he grows up his real parents show up to the dismay of all the villagers. The movie revolves around his transition from a village lad to a city guy and back with emotions and fun strewn all over.
13. Jodi No. 1
The names Jai and Veeru were made famous once again by this movie.
They both are friends who con people by first gaining their confidence. They have fun with the looted money and then move on to find another one.
One fine day they get involved in a scuffle between a local gang leader's brother and kill him mistakenly. Once they realize what they have done they run away in a different city to protect themselves. But the don is on the lookout for them and won't leave them.
The lead actors do a wonderful act and audience does not have any chance to say bad about this one. It was a super hit at the box office. And after this there came another movie which was more or like a sequel to this one known as Ek Aur Ek Gyarah.

14. Joru Ka Ghulam
Govinda's role is as funny as it can, but equally good are Ali Asgar, Ashok Saraf, Razzak Khan, and Johnny Lever.
The one that I like the most is of Ashok Saraf who plays the role of P.K. Girpade. With his natural talent he reminds me of Keshto Mukherjee.
15. Kyon Ki Main Jhooth Nahin Bolta
Raj Malhotra would lie to achieve anything and everything. Lying comes easy to him. With that he gets married to the daughter of a wealthy man and earns handsomely by saving underworld dons by practicing law.
This won't continue for long as the wishes of his son comes true that his dad stops lying. The next day each word that he utters is the truth. Now the problem starts and the fun begins.
Stars Sushmita Sen and south siren Rambha.
16. Life Partner
In this as well Govinda plays the role of a lawyer, and that too of a divorce lawyers. He has a charm and getting girls are like getting a glass of coffee.
He seems to preach the ways how to satisfy the lady love. Watch it if you want to some handy ideas. Genelia's role is childishly funny whereas the one of Prachi comes of matured.
17. Partner
The return of Govinda after his forgetful days in politics. He went back to his man, David Dhawan. Imust say Govinda does a better role than Bhai.
The movie is based on the concept of love guru preaching ways to find love. Govinda is also a client to Salman where he has set sights on the gorgeous, stunning, sexy Katrina who happens to be the chairperson of the company where he works.
The script is loosely based on the Hollywood movie Hitch.
19. Saajan Chale Sasural
Music, debt, two marriages, and humor sum up the story of this flick.
This film got two Filmfare awards. One for the best comedian to Satish Kaushik and the other a special award to Govinda for his role of Shyamsunder. Below is the list of all the awards won by him.
