Frasier Facts and Trivia

Between Cheers and Frasier (and a guest appearance on Wings), Kelsey Grammer played the role of Frasier Crane to delighted fans. He is the first person to receive Emmy nominations for playing the same role on three different shows (Cheers, Wings, and Frasier).

It is hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Frasier, but Grammer was actually the second choice for the role on Cheers. He was bested by John Lithgow. Lithgow considered the role but turned it down because the part was originally meant to be an occasional part and not a regular addition to the cast.

Grammer won over the audience and most of the cast members, and his part was expanded into a regular fixture of the show. His co-star Shelly Long did not like Grammer or the character of Frasier. Long was also well known for being demanding on the set and the writers began writing longer scripts for Frasier as a passive-aggressive means of sticking it to the troublesome actress.

Grammer had many tragic life events, including the murder of his father in 1968 in the Virgin Islands. His sister, Karen Elisa Grammer, was murdered in 1975 while finishing a shift working at a Red Lobster in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He had two stepbrothers that were killed in a shark attack.

Grammer was born in St. Thomas and grew up in New Jersey. He could not be any more different than his uptight Frasier character. He resides amongst the Malibu surfing scene and embraces a very relaxed lifestyle.

Originally, Mel Torme was chosen to sing the ending theme song until someone suggested Grammer give it a try. Grammer was then chosen to sing it. The terms scrambled eggs and tossed salad in the song are a reference to Frasier's "mixed up" callers.

Frasier's apartment was a star in itself. Set designers spent $500,000 to furnish the apartment with the eclectic decor. Even Martin's eyesore of a chair was expensive due to it being made for the show. The high cost came from the specialty 1970s fabric to cover it.

Grammer felt immediately at home on the set of Frasier because the apartment set occupied the same soundstage at Paramount Studios that housed the set of Cheers for 11 years.

Niles Crane

Niles Crane

Niles: David Hyde Pierce

Niles is an even more extreme version of Frasier. He is fussier, more pretentious, and elitist. The banter between the two is a driving force in the show. Their sibling rivalry and competitive nature led to some of the more hilarious scenes in the show. The character of Niles was actually an afterthought.

There were some continuity changes between Cheers and Frasier. In Cheers, Frasier had mentioned being an only child. His father was also dead. Both of these things were included in an inside joke during the episode where the family went to Boston and encountered Cliff's going away party.

One of the writers had seen David Hyde Pierce in a show and was impressed; they thought he looked like a younger Kelsey Grammer. Niles was immediately written into the script and Pierce was hired without the need to audition The rest is television magic.

Niles is married to a wealthy woman named Maris at the start of the show. Maris is never shown, however, there was a plan for her to be made visible. Because she had been overly described by the other characters in the show, the task of finding an actress who fit the physical description of Maris was impossible, so the running gag of never seeing her was continued.

Pierce has said that, prior to this series, he had no strong interest in wine nor opera. Ironically, he was introduced to both by John Mahoney, whose Martin Crane character has a distaste for anything cultured.

Pierce trained as a classical pianist for years before becoming an actor. Thus, whenever Niles is shown playing the piano, it's usually Pierce's own playing that is heard. Grammer does not play the piano in the show and mimed to a professional recording whenever Frasier plays the piano.

Martin Crane

Martin Crane

Martin: John Mahoney

Martin Crane transitioned from a bitter, cranky old man into a relatively free spirit compared to his sons. He remained set in his ways but was easily entertained by novel pursuits, sports, his dog Eddie, and the mishaps of his children.

Mahoney was courted for this role. He did not need to audition. The casting team made it known that if he was available, they wanted him for the role. This decision was made despite the fact that Frasier mentioned his father was dead on Cheers.

Eddie was Martin's faithful companion. The trainer had a special trick for when the scene called for Eddie to lick Martin; they put liver pate behind Mahoney's ear. This practice was later mocked as an inside joke when Niles wanted it to appear that Eddie liked him and put pate behind his ear. It was further mocked when Frasier had three dates go badly and he gave Eddie the liver pate he had prepared for dinner.

Daphne Moon

Daphne Moon

Daphne: Jane Leeves

Jane Leeves was not the first choice for the role of Daphne. Grammer made the decision while doing a read through with Leeves and realized she would be a great addition to the cast. Originally though, the role was meant to go to Rosie Perez.

Daphne is said to come from Manchester, England. She was actually from London. There was no concern about her accent until the show became popular and was shown overseas. Viewers in England complained because she had the wrong accent. The equivalent difference in the United States would be giving someone in New York City a Texas accent. Leeves was required to take classes to develop her Manchester accent. Ironically, John Mahoney, who is actually from Manchester, took classes to lose his Manchester accent early on in his career.

At one point during Frasier's 11 seasons, Leeves was the highest paid British woman on television in the United States.

Rather than write Leeves' real-life pregnancy into the script, or filming just her face, the production team decided to put her in a fat suit and write scenes around her gaining large amounts of weight. Her rapid loss of weight was attributed to her going to a health spa.

On the show, Daphne (Jane Leeves) lost nine pounds and twelve ounces at the health spa. This is a reference and inside joke to the fact that Leeves' daughter, Isabella, was born at nine pounds and twelve ounces. She asked Peri Gilpin to be her daughter's godmother.

Roz Doyle

Roz Doyle

Roz: Peri Gilpin

Peri Gilpin was not the first choice for the role of Roz. She was bested by Lisa Kudrow (Friends). The production staff wanted someone who could convincingly stand up to Frasier and be more assertive. It was decided that while Kudrow could handle the comedic component, she was not forceful enough for the role, so it was given to Gilpin.

Gilpin was the only main cast member not to receive an Emmy nomination for her work on the series.

John Mahoney and Gilpin appeared (as unrelated characters) on Cheers during that show's final season. In addition, Gilpin appeared on an episode of Wings, which was another Cheers spin-off.
