Five Famous People Born on April 1

Happy April Fools' Day!

I wonder if the mothers of these celebrities thought they were getting the ultimate April Fools' joke when they went into labor. Well, they really did have their babies on one of the biggest days for practical jokes.

I’ve really never been much for practical jokes myself, but I know plenty of people who are. So, in honor of all you practical jokers out there (and those of you who happened to be born on this day, here is my list of five famous people who were born on April Fools' Day.

Lon Chaney, Sr. Celebrity born on April Fools' Day.

Lon Chaney

Leonidas Frank Chaney was born on April 1, 1883. To most people, however, is known as Lon Chaney, Sr. - probably one of the most famous movie actors ever in the history of film, even though he only starred in one talking film (The Unholy Three, which was released just a few months before Chaney died).

Chaney’s parents were both deaf, and so Chaney learned from an early age how to communicate without using words. This would serve him well throughout his silent film career. Chaney’s name is much more recognizable than his face because his face was hidden by a mask in most of his films.

Chaney died of a throat hemorrhage at the age of 47, following a struggle with both lung cancer and pneumonia.

Clementine Churchill, wife of Sir Winston, was also born on April Fools' Day.

Clementine Churchill

Clementine Hozier was born April 1, 1885. Her parentage is somewhat disputed. Her mother was Lady Blanche Hozier, but her father is unknown. Her father may have been Bay Middleton, or he may have been Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, but one thing is for sure - Clementine’s father was not Lady Blanche’s husband, Henry Montague Hozier because Hozier was sterile.

But even though we don’t know who her father was, we most certainly know who her husband was - the famous British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Clementine Hozier and the young Churchill dated for only a few months before they were married. She was 23. He was 33.

Although they stayed married until Sir Winston’s death in 1965, Clementine was known to have at least one affair. Still, she and Sir Winston had five children together and had a seemingly happy marriage.

Clementine Churchill died at the age of 92 after many years of serving her country.

Debbie Reynolds

Actress/singer Debbie (Mary Frances) Reynolds was born April 1, 1932, in El Paso, Texas. She has appeared in almost 100 films and television programs over the course of her career, which began when she was only 16 years old.

Reynolds got her first big break when she landed the female lead in Singin' in the Rain with Gene Kelly in 1952. A few years later, she married fellow actor Eddie Fisher, but he left her for Elizabeth Taylor, and they divorced in 1959. Reynolds and Fisher are the parents of Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher.

I loved her as the voice of the cartoon spider Charlotte in the 70s animated film Charlotte's Web , although I didn't actually see it when it first came out - only in reruns. And that's saying a lot since I'm a complete arachnophobe!

Probably my favorite Debbie Reynolds movie is the dark comedy The Gazebo , in which she played Glenn Ford's character's wife, Nell. That movie has to be one of the funniest I've ever seen. It's too bad it's so hard to find now.

Debbie Reynolds is still alive and kicking - and still acting. She has a role in the upcoming film One for the Money , starring Katherine Heigl. It is set to be in theaters this coming January.

Ali McGraw was born on April Fools' Day, too.

Ali MacGraw

Ali MacGraw was born April 1, 1939. She is best known for her portrayal of Jenny in the classic movie Love Story . In fact, that's the only movie I've ever seen her in, although apparently she was in quite a few popular films back in the early '70s, like The Getaway with Steve McQueen, to whom she was married for five years. After they divorced, she never married again.

She still does some acting, and she's also a well-known animal rights advocate. But she'll always be Jenny to me (and, perhaps, to many people). Who could ever forget that famous line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry"?

So, happy April Fools' birthday, Ali/Jenny!

Susan Boyle

Susan Boyle won the world’s collective heart when she sang “I Dreamed a Dream” on Britain’s Got Talent two years ago. She lost the talent show, but I wonder if she really cares? She’s gained international success.

But, truth be told, she’s earned her success. She has an absolutely fabulous voice. And she’s given millions of non-supermodel-type women hope that they, too, can find fame and fortune. Okay, the chances are slim, but the possibility does exist, and Susan Boyle is proof of it.

Congratulations, Susan, on passing the half-century mark. And thank you for being an inspiration to all of us average, ordinary women!

And that wraps up the list - No foolin’

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this list of five famous people born on April Fools’ Day. Once again, I know I’ve had fun writing it. Now we can all go out and have fun playing tricks on people. Well, I doubt I will, actually, but you all can.

Just please make sure your jokes aren’t too mean. Remember, there’s a fine line between funny and cruel. Okay, that’s enough of my preaching. Have great day!
