Best known for his cerebral, often nonlinear, storytelling, acclaimed writer-director Christopher Nolan was born on July 30, 1970, in London, England.

Christopher Nolan, a name that surpasses many in Hollywood and enjoys much the same stature as Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick back in the days, celebrated his 50th birthday on July 30.
While we may be a couple of days late to the party, it’s never too late for a Nolan marathon. With hugely popular and successful films like Inception under his belt, Nolan is rightfully regarded as one of the finest filmmakers today.

Batman Begins (2005)

The Prestige 2006

This 2006 thriller from Nolan is an intriguing tale of obsession and deception.

Award-winning actors Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlet Johanson star in THE PRESTIGE, the twisting, turning story that, like all great magic tricks, stays with you. Legendary musician David Bowie also stars as Nikola Tesla in the film, helping to weave the intricate plot even deeper. This one’s a must-watch if you need some mind-bending thriller on your list.

The Dark Knight 2008

Nolan’s version of the inimitable nemesis of Batman, Joker, helped to make the character even more timeless than it already was – his direction of Heath Ledger as the Joker earned Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his chilling performance.

Batman raises the stakes in his bourgeois war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as The Joker.

As if you need any more convincing that this may just be one of Nolan’s finest work, the New York Times had this to say about the film: “Pitched at the divide between art and industry, poetry and entertainment, The Dark Knight goes darker and deeper than any Hollywood movie of its comic-book kind.”

Let’s be honest, when this film came out, the majority of were left scratching our heads. What makes this such a stellar film? It’s simple: it pushed the boundaries of our minds and as Rolling Stone put it, “Inception rewards the attention it demands.”

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in this sci-fi action that travels around the globe and into the world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the best there is at extraction: stealing valuable secrets inside the subconscious during the mind's vulnerable dream state. His skill has made him a coveted player in industrial espionage but also has made him a fugitive and cost him dearly. Now he may get a second chance if he can do the impossible: inception, planting an idea rather than stealing one. If they succeed, Cobb and his team could pull off the perfect crime. But no planning or expertise can prepare them for a dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy only Cobb could have seen coming.

Interstellar 2014

Starring Matthew McConaughey in the lead role, Interstellar is Nolan’s science-fiction epic about a future in which the Earth is dying and he must find a new planet that could be habitable for humanity.

Set in 2067, this film will soar you through space, and land you back home in a daze. According to Variety, “Interstellar is as visually and conceptually audacious as anything Nolan has yet done.” Some also consider one of the more personal Nolan films.
The main cast also includes Wes Bentley, Casey Affleck, David Gyasi, Mackenzie Foy and Topher Grace.
