Many of the women that are famous stars today are women who started out being slightly famous in the halls of their high schools – as cheerleaders. The most obvious famous females that were cheerleaders in the past are those women who are known for their dance skills and gymnastics abilities. After all, cheerleading trained these gals for performing those feats on a bigger stage. However, there are also famous actresses and models and other ladies who began their lives in the spotlight under the glaring lights of the football fields back home.
Here’s a look at some famous women who were cheerleaders before they were national or international stars:
We know her now as one of the judges on American Idol but back in her heyday the singer Paula Abdul was known for the great dancing she would add to her stage performances and music videos. Those skills were honed on the courts and fields of her high school where she was a head cheerleader (and also the homecoming queen). She didn’t stop there, though; Paula Abdul also went on to be a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers before she finally made a name for herself in music.
This is another singer who is known as much for her dance abilities as she is for the sound of her voice. Madonna is a stunner on the stage. Much of her moves are original but she learned the basics from the choreography of cheerleading, a sport she participated in while she was attending the University of Washington.
Now here is a singer that isn’t particularly known for her dance moves and yet she does indeed have a history as a cheerleader. Goes to show that sometimes there are other talents that stand out more than those that were displayed during high school!
Is it any surprise that this famous gal was a cheerleader? That’s the rumor anyway. She dropped out of high school at sixteen so she couldn’t have spent too much time with the pom poms but people say that she does have some cheering in her past.
Yet another woman who doesn’t shock us at all by revealing that she was a cheerleader before she was a Hollywood star. She donned a cheerleading outfit again last year when performing for Ugly Betty.
As mentioned before, not all previous cheerleaders turn into famous singer/dancers. Some of them go into other careers that require outgoing personalities and stunning good looks. Alicia Silverstone, the actress known for beauty queen roles such as playing the girl in Clueless, is someone who also used to be a cheerleader before heading to Hollywood.
This star of many movies including such flicks as There’s Something About Mary is a star with the kind of good looks that are stereotypical of a high school cheerleader. She is leggy and blonde with blue eyes and a great smile. And she surely did fine for herself in high school as a California cheerleader.
It makes sense for a woman who stars in movies like Clueless or There’s Something About Mary to have been a cheerleader in the past but what about an actress who is known as much for her smarts as she is known for her good looks? Halle Berry is an example of just such an actress who was also a cheerleader in high school. However, cheerleading was just one of the many hats she wore during her younger years – she was also class president and a member of the honor society.
Jamie Lee Curtis.
Here is an example of another actress who is known for more than just her good looks but who does have good looks that hearken back to the days when she was just a pretty cheerleader.
Streep is an award-winning actress who has worked in a variety of mediums including television and film. Since she’s able to star in the cast of any type of show, it’s hardly a surprise that she also starred as one of the cheerleaders of her high school.
She plays a former fashion model on Desperate Housewives so she’s clearly known for her good looks. Those looks probably served her well during her cheerleader days in high school in Texas.
Going back in time a little bit, here’s another actress who was a cheerleader before she was a super star on the silver screen. She was a cheerleader back in Sweden before her career got going.
You don’t have to be all grown up to become a cheerleader especially if you’re already famous for being a child actor. Such is the case with the young Dakota Fanning who reported last year that she really enjoys cheering on her school team in California (when she’s not making magnificent movies of course).
Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
Not all beautiful cheerleaders end up becoming famous for something related to their looks and performance abilities. Ruth Bader Ginsberg is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court with many distinctions including being the first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court. And yes, before ending up as a lawyer, judge and Supreme Court justice, Ginsberg was once a cheerleader.
Unfortunately not all cheerleaders end up becoming famous for something impressive whether that’s in entertainment or in another profession. There are some, like Laci Peterson, who live quiet lives that end in violent crime which lands them in the spotlight with only their high school cheerleading pictures to show for who they were in the past.
Notably, it’s not just famous women who were once cheerleaders. There are quite a few famous men who have cheerleading days in their pasts including Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson and George W. Bush.
