Famous Redheads Throughout History

Anna is a writer who wears many other hats and has a wealth of experience that she draws from, sometimes funny, sometimes serious.

Proud to Be Red!

I am proud to be a redhead, and I have some really great company! There have been many famous redheads throughout history! As far back as biblical times, even. Both Adam and Mary Magdalene are often portrayed in art as having red hair. There is no way to know if this is true, and I'm not trying to starting a debate on that issue.

There are many great redheads throughout history; artists, world leaders, actors and actresses, writers and painters. There are also some redheads that I wish we didn't have to claim. Some are natural redheads, and some are just wanna-be's. I can't blame the people that want to be a redhead! Redheaded women are beautiful, and redheaded men are sexy!!!

Prince Harry

Prince Harry

World Leaders

There have been many leaders throughout history that have been 'ginger', if you will. Eric the Red received his name because of his red beard and hair. It may have also been due to his often fiery temper, a rumored trait of many redheads. Richard the Lionheart, a great king was a redhead, as were Henry VII and Henry VIII.

Queen Elizabeth the First was often depicted with red hair in paintings. This hair was actually a wig. Her own hair fell out at a rather young age due to the lead that was in the cream used at the time to whiten her skin. Seems Europe is full of redheads, including Winston Churchill and Napoleon Bonaparte, as well. The troublemaking Prince Harry is the most famous current royal redhead.

Several Presidents have also been redheads, including Thomas Jefferson and Martin Van Buren.

Sexy Redheaded Women of the Early Age of Stage and Screen

When you talk of the early age of stage and screen, several redheads come to mind; Rita Hayworth (who was not a natural redhead) Lucille Ball (who used to joke that she couldn't remember her natural hair color), Ginger Rogers and Katherine Hepburn. There are so many more. Some are better known than others.

Marilyn Monroe was actually born a redhead, though she is most famous as a blonde. Bette Davis, famous for her beautiful eyes, and her role in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" was also a redhead.

Clara Bow was one of the first stars of the screen, landing a role in "Beyond the Rainbow" in 1921 after winning a magazine contest. She went on to star in many films, an astounding 14 films in the year of 1925 alone. She earned the name, "The It Girl", after her role in the 1927 film, "IT"(not to be confused with the Stephen King movie of the same name).

Other famous redheads of the early years include, Mitzi Gaynor, who started in the musical, South Pacific, and Shirley MacLaine who has starred in numerous films. And who could forget Raquel Welch? Apparently I did...

Beautiful Big Screen Celebs of Today

Now, I have already talked about the sexy redheads of the big screen from the early days, so now it's only fair that I make note of the more recent crop of carrot-topped women on the silver screen.

Some more notable names include the redheaded queen of the eighties, Molly Ringwald, delightfully funny, Madeline Kahn, and the gorgeous Nicole Kidman. Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts and Lindsay Lohan also come quickly to mind. As I said before, some of these may not be natural redheads.

There are a few lesser known redheads that I feel bear mention. One of those is Isla Fisher, who starred in Wedding Crashers alongside Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Another is Frances Fisher who starred in the mega-hit movie, Titanic, as the mother of Rose. Natasha Lyonne received acclaim in Woody Allen's film, Everyone Says I Love You, and virtual unknown, Franka Potente starred in the amazing movie, Run Lola Run.

I loved Amy Adams in Enchanted, so did my daughter. Emma Stone is another beautiful redheaded actress that I am a huge fan of!

Gorgeous Redheaded Women on TV

Beautiful redheads are not restricted to the big screen alone. The small screen is full of beautiful redheaded women! Comedies and dramas alike star redheads in a variety of roles. From the sometimes evil, and devious character played by Marcia Cross on Desperate Housewives to the funny, and sometimes crazy, character of Grace on Will & Grace, played by Debra Messing, who has gone on to star in the hit show, Smash, which has since been cancelled. I'm not sure why. I loved that show.

Gillian Anderson is a well known star of The X-Files, where she played a very smart FBI agent who was often at odds with her partner. She now makes appearances on the show Hannibal, but as a blonde. Marilu Henner played the main female character on the much loved TV show, Taxi. Alyson Hannigan got her start on the show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the acclaimed HBO series Six Feet Under had two redheaded actresses in Lauren Ambrose and Frances Conroy.

One of my favorite shows has a redhead among their cast/staff, whatever you want to call it. That show is Mythbusters. Kari Byron does a great job adding a much needed female element to a show that is most often watched by men.

A somewhat lesser known redhead of the small screen is an actress by the name of Felicia Day, who has done voice over work for the Disney show, Fish Hooks, and for video games. She got her start with a web show called The Guild. She has also made appearances on the show Supernatural.

The Redheaded Men

I can't include just the redheaded women of television and films. I have to include the men as well. Most are remarkably talented, some are incredibly sexy. One exception to both of these remarks is Danny Bonaduce. Sorry, but it's true.

Some better examples of sexy redheaded men are Robert Redford, Damian Lewis, who starred in Stephen King's Dreamcatcher, a TV show called Life, where he plays a police officer falsly convited of murder, clears his name and dedicates himself to finding out who framed him, and the new show, Homeland; and the cute and funny, Seth Green, who currently provides the voice for Chris, on the hit cartoon, Family Guy, as well as being one of the minds behind the Cartoon Network show, Robot Chicken.

Other talented redheaded men include Philip Seymore Hoffman, Eric Stoltz, star of many movies, including Mask and Some Kind of Wonderful, and now works behind the camera, as well; and Ron Howard, who got his start on The Andy Griffith Show as Opie, went on to star on Happy Days, and is now an acclaimed director.

Redheads in Music

When I originally wrote this, I had intended to include a section on the amazing redheads of the music industry. Truth is, I got tired. I wanted to go to bed. So, thanks for the reminder from Nicole Winter!!

The music industry is full of redheads. Some of them are genuine, and some of them are just wanna-be's, but either way, they make up some of my favorite artists.

Classical music even has a hint of red thanks to composer Antonio Vivaldi, who wrote The Four Seasons , a four part violin concerto, and Tomaso Albinoni, who is most well known for his opera "Zenobia, Regina de Palmireni".

Country has a crop of carrot-topped talent, including Reba McEntire, Jo Dee Messina, and the legendary Willie Nelson. Willie has written and recorded numerous songs, including "Crazy" which was made popular by my favorite country singer, Patsy Cline (sadly, she was not a redhead, but I still love her anyway).

Girly, pop music of the eighties and nineties had it's share of redheads. Belinda Carlisle and Tiffany come to mind. "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" was a popular song that the redheaded Kiki Dee sang as a duet with Elton John. A newer crop of women are making waves on the music scene in a far different way. Tori Amos is a personal favorite of mine! A recent newcomer to the music scene is A Fine Frenzy, with a beautiful redhead singing haunting music, including the song, "Almost Lover".

Axl Rose of Guns 'n' Roses has red hair, as does Dave Mustaine of Megadeath. More redheads make up the fringes of rock, the alternative rock scene. Shirley Manson of Garbage, Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols and Keith Flint of the Prodigy are just a few. Others include Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Trey Anastasio of every stoners favorite band, Phish, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.

That is a lot of artists, across a wide range of music, and I know I forgot some. I did my best, and know I am still getting comments on artists I have missed. Keep 'em coming.

You forgot. Lenin, Winston Churchill, Henry the eighth and Elizabeth the first.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on January 28, 2016:

I said that not all of them are natural redheads, some have gained fame as a redhead, though.

Sbutterb on December 26, 2015:

Allison and Debra are not real redheads

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on November 11, 2013:

Eric--Hmmm..it seems that you are right. I don't know where I got my information from, but when I had originally done the research, it appeared correct. I will fix it immediately. Thank you!!!

Eric on November 09, 2013:

Custer was NOT a redhead. He had very blonde hair, hence his nickname, "Yellow hair" which was given to him by many Indian tribes, his ancestors have blonde hair, and was the name of a book about him and was the name of a documentary film about him. Only 'night at the museum pt.2' shows him as a redhead, but Hollywood always tries to show redheads as negative people, and when making a film about a great redhead (rob Roy, Thomas Jefferson, etc) they change their hair colour to brown or blonde. We hope you correct this on your page. Thank you.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on January 28, 2013:

Wizzy-- I hope you do. Maybe that will give them something to think about!!

Wizzy red on January 27, 2013:

Thank you so much next time someone picks on me at school coz of my hair I'm showing them the site. Remember Elizabeth 1!

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on March 06, 2012:

Liam-- Interesting information. Thank you for sharing, and I hope you do find a fair redhead to keep you company.

Liam2268 on March 04, 2012:

well ginger from 8 weeks ago, little story now to clear the air, When Christianity came to the blessed Island called Eire, this was many centuries before the Danes, in fact most the Irish on that Island were indeed from Iberian Celtic descent, and the wife of Mil was is lore is correct the daughter of the pharaoh of Egypt, and or a Jewish princess, therefore , having stated as such many in Ireland are and have had a rather dark hair and eyes, for example Colin Farrel, or Gabriel Byrnes, or Delores O'Riordan when not dyed blonde all of the Corrs oh how i love Andrea perfect angel she is. So while the light Haired and fair complected Irish and we love all of our brothers and sisters come from a Norse ancestry I don't think the term is all together racist for it does not invoke an insult to all Irish people at once, now Paddy or Mick would be different. As for reds I think they are gorgeous altogether and would welcome any fair red head into my life so far as she would be willing to put up with a gobshite like meself.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on January 11, 2012:

connie-- I hate to say it, but Reba dyes her hair now, too.

boom-chicka-boom-- LOL! Thanks for the comment!!

Tomek-- You must draw a lot of attention!! Best wishes to you out in Poland!!

redsouth-- Yes, Carrot Top is famous, but he is far too shameful to show up on this list...LOL

bryan-- Poppy Montgomery!! Thanks for the addition. This was written several years ago, and I had never heard of her. I really need to update this thing...

Leslie-- As I have stated in the article, as well as several times in the comments, not all of these people are natural redheads.

KingMegaTwigg-- Hmmm...I mentioned him, but did not include a picture...I swear, people do not read these things..

Chris-- I could do without the sunburns, too!!

mmm-- Thanks for the addition!!

Ginger-- I would love to see a picture, not a painting, of Jefferson or Napoleon. That would be interesting. And any pictures I have ever seen of Churchill were when he was old and gray. And it's Custer, not Custard...They did not worship Druids. Druids were like priests. They worshiped pagan gods.

mmm on December 21, 2011:

you forgot Karen Gillian from Doctor who.

Chris on December 10, 2011:

Thanks for the list, im a ginger- and i dont mind, in fact, i enjoy my hair color. Ive seen comments here and people i see around in school or elsewhere and you can tell they dont like gingers- its helped me pick real friends, plus i like being relatively unique, but i can do without the sun burn- haha

KingMegaTwigg on December 01, 2011:

Where is Dave Mustaine?

Leslie on November 21, 2011:

Most of these people aren't even natural redheads dude?!

Amy Adams is a blonde as well as Kate winslet, and Julia Roberts.

A fine frenzy, she as well admitted to dying it, Tori Amos always wanted to be a redhead! Nicole Kidman and so Manu others on this list are wannabe redheads! Get your facts straight-.- still redheads rule!!!!!!

bryan on November 19, 2011:

Red is so hot but dont forget poppy montgomery thanks for the entertainment.

redsouth on November 14, 2011:

excuse me... WHERE'S CARROT TOP!? Is he not famous...?

Tomek on November 06, 2011:

Redheads are thought to be more common in Anglo-American, Scandinavian and German culture.

But I'm from Poland and I'm a redhead. I must say that I've been considered as someone different. It catches people's attention anyway.

Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. But it's always good to be proud of being a red haired.

Regards from Poland,

Tomek

connie on October 15, 2011:

i am a redhead and when i was younger the more i got out in the sun the redder it got (and i also burned), but now that i am a few years older my hair doesn't get that red again. i miss it so i have to resort to dyeing it using revlon 'bright auburn". not far that we can't stay our youthful red color. would love to have reba's red all the time.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on October 03, 2011:

Huachi-- I am so glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you for all the suggestions!!! There are so many, I could make a few Hubs about redheads!!!

Huachi on October 03, 2011:

I have truly enjoyed reading all the posts!!! I wish I was a redhead ... I have a funky dirty blonde, but when I get alot of sun red highlights come out!!! One of the sweetest students I have taught has bright red/orange hair, he is the product of both parents being red headed (long live the red heads!!) How about Clay Aiken, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson,Bette Midler, Ginger Baker,I know Carol Burnett was mentioned but what about Vickie Lawerence?? Actress Tina Louise (Ginger fron Gilligan's Island)Oh, and Sarah Ferguson!!! Anyway, hope I haven't repeated any/many .... again, I enjoyed this!!!

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on September 21, 2011:

Ron S-- I agree on both counts, especially after the creation of such holidays as "kick a ginger day". Who creates a holiday that calls for violence against another person? If someone created "kick a homosexual day", the ACLU, GLAAD, and various other organizations would be calling for criminal action against them for inciting violence against a group of people.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on September 06, 2011:

Servus-- I know some of the people on this list are not natural redheads. I made reference to that. Some just want to be redheads.

Servus on September 05, 2011:

Gillian Anderson and Kate Winslet are *NOT* natural redheads, although Gillian is very fair-skinned and can pass off as a redhead when her hair is dyed red. Gillian Anderson looks stunning as a redhead, by the way.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on August 28, 2011:

Terese-- While I appreciate the link, I don't like to rely on a source like Wikipedia, that can often contain flawed information. I prefer to do my own research.

Kim-- I agree!!!

BEEGEE-- I love Ann Margaret!!

Alleigha-- She was not born blonde. If you look at earlier photos of her, she has reddish colored hair. She dyed it blonde and gained fame as being a blonde.

Anonymous-- Shaun White is awesome!!!

Lora-- I had no idea Colin Firth was really a redhead...I'll have to check that out! Don't know who Boudicea is, but I'll find out!

Lora on August 28, 2011:

What about Colin Firth - hes a redhead, uses dye.

Boudicea...fiery lady

Winston Churchill

Alleigha on August 19, 2011:

Marilyn Monroe was not a redhead. She was born with blonde hair then it turned brown. So she is indeed a natural brunette.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on June 16, 2011:

Clayton--Glad you liked it...Felicia Day...despite being a fan of several of those shows, I can't seem to put a face to the name. I guess I will look her up. Sure that once I see who she is, I will remember her. Thanks for the addition!!!

jay kay-- It is possible to have hair follicles of different colors, sort of like having freckles...My daughter's hair seems to be all colors at once. It's sort of brown, sort of blond and sort of red. Hard to really decide exactly what color it really is.

SydF--- Thanks so much!!!

Luna-- Thanks for the additions!!! I seem to have forgotten a lot...

Irishjer-- I will take your word for that one!

Dave-- Just because he was painted a certain way, doesn't mean it is accurate.

Sarah-- I have no idea who that is, but thank you for the addition!

Abigail-- Thank you so much!!! I love Laura Prepon!!!

llrak-- Kate who??

mtsi-- Glad you enjoyed it enough to re-read!!!

Sarah on March 09, 2011:

Napoleon had red hair? But he has brown? I'm confused :\

Irishjer on February 24, 2011:

Lead singer of Paramore is sexy, she's a redhead.

Luna on February 06, 2011:

Nice article, but I think you forgot Simone Simons of Epica, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Emilie Autumn, and Molly C Quinn, among others.

jay kay on January 06, 2011:

So Sorry.... some text missing...meant to say not everyone can pull it off..you have to have the right skin tone. IMO

jay kay on January 06, 2011:

Hi, love your article, I am a brunette/auburn haired lady! it is possible to have hair follicles of more than one colour.I could meet someone out and they'd think I dyed my hair brown...depends on the light! My mother is a redhed, She's beautiful.. I got her skin but mix of my parents hair! So because of my skin I think I look more redhed..I'm getting greys now so dye it auburn as brown is too dark for my skin! Up yours to the person who think's dyed hair doesn't make the cut. X

Clayton on January 01, 2011:

I just found your page today and love it. I was originally a light red-head, but time has toned down my hair to white. (Mustache has stayed a deep red though).

I have another red to add to your collection. My current favorite red-haired actress, Felicia Day. She has had roles on House, Monk, and Roommates, as well as being Vi in the last season of Buffy. More recently she is in the SyFy Channel's movie Red and series Eureka, and has her own web-series, The Guild. A wonderful, beautiful, talented woman.

Mons-- Ewan McGregor!! Yumm!!!

Mons on October 08, 2010:

One of the most beautiful men of the world has said himself that his natural hair is "reddish" and you can see that in his movie "trainspotting". He colours his hair all the time, but he has red beard sometimes. And his name is Ewan McGregor. He is so cute and nice.

Erin-- Thank you for the great additions!!!! Love Anne Bonny...somehow forgot about her...thank you!!!

Erin on September 07, 2010:

I have a few more world leaders you could mention. Queen Boudica (who helped Ancient England rebel against Rome) is always described as a "fiery redhead". Also Anne Bonny (my personal favorite) is one of the only successful women pirates. She sailed with Calico Jack Rackham and is said to have been more fearless in battle than any man. (She was Irish born redhead)

-And best of all they are both naturals. :)

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on August 31, 2010:

ReginaPhalange-- First off, I love the Friends reference in your name. Cute!! Second, I do mention at the very beginning that some of them are wanna-be redheads. Those that became famous with red hair, even if it wasn't their natural color.

ReginaPhalange on August 31, 2010:

What's in a person's hair color? Nothing, really. Some of those redheads came from a bottle. Julianne Moore, Axl Rose, Seth Green and a couple of others are the only real redheads there. Julia Roberts has been quoted as saying, "My real hair color is kind of a dark blonde. Now I just have mood hair." I will grant that she's one of the few people who looks good as a blonde, a brunette or a redhead. Not everyone can pull that off.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was a blonde by the time Buffy went of the air, but she started out with brown hair, the same color she had when she was on All My Children. Does that make her a blonde? Lucy Lawless was a brunette for years on Xena: Warrior Princess, but she's really a blonde.

Anna Marie Bowman (author) from Florida on August 29, 2010:

Bre-- It's great when we can come to terms with our red hair, and take pride in it. Seeing all the amazing people who have had red hair, just makes you feel good.

naikarrah-- I love Miranda!!

Robert-- Though discrimination has lessened some over history, we used to be thought of as witches, evil, etc, I have felt some discrimination over having red hair. I am automatically seen as having a temper or an attitude, so I already have a strike against me, though I have done nothing.

Robert Redhead on August 29, 2010:

I have felt a form of racism? as a red head man I feel. It is nice to see an non-derogatory site about redheads. I read through the entire page, I couldn't stop reading. Thanx. Also, has anyone else felt descriminated against based on their red roots?

Yayyyy i love this stuff, its funny how i went through school being teased and picked on when i was younger. I hated being different and had low self esteem. Then i grew up and all of a sudden boys went from ewww carrot top to heyyyy i love red heads. Now its like fighting em off. We stick out, the plain blondes and brunettes blend in. Love it. What's even funnier is that iv NEVER met a redheaded guy that i thought was cute and could never see myself dating one. yuck. Well guess what? ...yup. Hes not my usual type but hes sooo sweet, guess ill be helping out the population ;) Strange i haven't seen much about our -tempers- yet, the boys are the worst!!!

fred hahn-- He was strawberry blonde when he was younger, I believe. His hair has lightened quite a bit.

NotAChance-- If you had read the actual article, instead of just looking at the pictures, you would have found that I pointed out that some of them are not natural redheads, but redhead wanna-be's. Thanks for counting, though.

Wetterdew-- YAY!!!! I am sure you are right. Some prefer plain, boring, mousy brown hair, over vibrant, sexy red hair. To each his own, I guess.

Wetterdew on November 07, 2009:

Yay for redheads! It's so much more exciting than having bland brown hair. :P Though I'm sure some people would prefer brown hair to red hair...

NotAChance on October 29, 2009:

Sorry, but I counted AT LEAST 10 people on your list that aren't natural redheads. So anyone who dyes their hair red at some point, even if it's for an acting role or a change of appearance...makes the cut?!

redhead24 on October 22, 2009:

so just a silly little story, when the report came out about redheads supposedly going extinct, everyone i know joked (well i hope they were joking lol) about making money off breeding me with the few redhead guys in our school to save the population :)

Tori on October 15, 2009:

Very Helpful!! Thank you for having this page :)!

Also forgot Ann Margaret. A red head that caught Elvis's attention certainly can't be ignored.

Julia on September 07, 2009:

Nice list.

Simone Simons from the band Epica is redhead, she's beautiful. :)
