Dr Who Info

I've loved the BBC TV show "Dr Who" since I was knee high to a grasshopper. The thing is though, I can never remember all the details of who did what when!

I thought this would be a great opportunity to compile together some great sources of Dr Who related info websites and awesome clips for you to enjoy.

Before I start I'd like to share with you an example of how obsessive some people can be when it comes to the beloved time lord and his associated paraphernalia..

I was behind the car with this plate, in local traffic, and just had to snap a photo!

For those of you who are are asking Who the heck is Dr Who? It's an interesting question.

No-one really knows what his real name is. He goes by "the doctor" and is a man, or should I say "alien" of infinite mystery. Although he looks human from the outside he's actually a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey (a species now extinct). As such he has two hearts and an annoying propensity to completely change his appearance- a process known as regeneration. During the regeneration his personality and fashion sense also change as well as his height, shoe size and hair colour :-) So far we're on the 11th incarnation.

He travels throughout the universe through time and space. Consequently he can go to any planet at any time and usually picks up a companion or two for the ride.

The series has been on air for almost 50 years with a long hiatus prior to the more modern version. It's know for it's slightly cheezy effects and is totally tongue in cheek, so I guess you either love it or you hate it. Despite its tenuous grip on reality, it can totally suck you in with emotion and intensity and you might even shed a few tears...

50 years of Dr Who..almost..

The Tardis

The Doctor's faithful mode of transport is the tardis. Always referred to in the feminine "she" is not just a vehicle but actually shares part of the doctors soul.

Tardis is not just a name it's an acronym and stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space which essentially means she's much, much larger on the inside than on the fact there's even a library and a swimming pool besides the large cockpit (although we never get to see them). On the outside she's a small police box, as used by British Policemen in the last century. Originally she was designed to blend in with her environment, but became "stuck" in her present endearing form that all fans have come to know and love.

Although she appears to have remained the same, the tardis has actually changed a little over the years, as shown in the photo below, courtesy of the BBC.

and on the inside.....

Make your own Tardis..

Much much bigger on the inside..

Sonic screwdriver

The Doctor's sonic screwdriver is renowned for its high pitched sonic noise and it's flashy light.

It's able to open just about anything, or seal anything, depending on the settings I assume. Although it seems relatively easy to operate with a simple point and shoot action. Of course every home should have one (especially if it doubles as a tv remote) and there are blueprints available should you wish to make one...see sample below:

Daleks vs cybermen

Arch enemies

The Doctor's main arch enemies are the Darleks and the Cybermen. Both are challenged in their ability to manoeuvre and are not know for their compassion. Generally their ambitions are to take over other planets, usually earth. Of course the Doctor always manages to find their weaknesses and win through in the end.

I've just recently started watching the current series of Doctor Who for the first time and this is a really helpful hub to have on hand! It provides some basic background info without dipping into spoilers.

Catherine Simmons (author) from Mission BC Canada on September 02, 2012:

Thanks Larry, this is certainly something to bear in mind should your dog have an obsession with remotes! However, ours show very little interest in them and, so far, we haven't had any need to escape from jail :-)

Larry Fields from Northern California on September 02, 2012:

Hi Catherine. I have a small caveat about using one's Sonic Screwdriver as a remote control. If you're a dog owner, your beloved pooch will especially motivated to use it as a chew toy, because it has more of your scent on it than any other object in your house.

It's much better to reserve one's Sonic Screwdriver for escaping from jail, as God intended.

Voted up and interesting.
