What is Dora the Explorer?
Dora the Explorer is an American animated television series aired on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. (Nickelodeon's preschool time block) for preschool aged children, mainly girls, of a 7 year old girl that goes on adventures with her many companions. Dora Marquez is of Hispanic descent, and she teaches children Spanish through repeated play and adventure antics. Dora uses the aide of her talking map and backpack, along with her sidekick, Boots the Monkey to share an interactive experience with children.
Dora's Explorer Girls
In 2009, Nickelodeon introduced an updated version of Dora, a preteen Dora. Alana, Kate, Emma, and Naiya were added with Dora the preteen and call themselves Dora's Explorer Girls.
Along with the new release of the Dora Explorer Girls television series, to help enhance the learning experience and promote the release of Dora's Explorer Girls the television show, Mattel has teamed up with Nickelodeon to create a preteen Dora with her new friends dolls called the Dora Links Dolls.
The Dora Links Dolls are the cornerstone of the Dora's Explorer Girls television show. By plugging the Dora Links dolls into a computer, girls can play games, explore, customize, solve mysteries with Dora and her new friends, and access Dora's brand-new, exclusive interactive online world.
Meet Dora's Explorer Girls:
- Dora - Dora is the preteen version of the 7-years old little Hispanic girl that your children have grown to love. She lives with her mama, papa, abuela, and her twin siblings, Isabella and Guillermo. She's just as adventurous as her 7-years old self.
- Naiya - Naiya loves science and being with her friends. I like Naiya because I have a daughter named Anaya, nicknamed Naya, and she kind of favors her. I suppose I'm bia
- Kate - Kate loves to perform on stage. Acting, dancing, or singing for her friends and family members.
- Emma - Emma loves music, listening to it and playing it. Emma plays the violin and the guitar, her favorite instruments.
- Alana - The sporty, Alana, loves to play all types of sports. Alana is good at all sports, but she loves to play soccer. She also loves animals.

Dora's Explorer Girls Controversy
As stated on Dora Controversy Blog, there are parents everywhere that think that this new Dora should not have been created, while others think that this is the expected next step in the Dora the Explorer franchise.
Dora has apparently turned from everyone's loveable tomboy-ish little 7-years old we've all grown to love into " a promiscuous Latina figurine". Even her commercial for her Dora Links Doll starts off with telling of the antics you can have online with your doll, but quickly turns into how you can accessorize and change her eye color and hair length. Personally, I think they've glamorized Dora into a too grown 10-years old girl.
I have two daughters of my own, 3 and 5 years old, and at 10 years old, they will not be changing their eye color or cutting their own hair. My personal opinion, of course, but I just think that they've tried to turn Dora into a mall crazed teen like they believe today's society girls in America are.
When, before, you were drawn to Dora's adventures and tomboy-ish behavior, you now get the pleasure to see Dora in a whole new fashion and accessorized light! How fun! Personally I was happy with 7-years old Dora because they concentrated on her smarts and wit instead of what shoes or blouse she had been wearing the last episode.
Plus the new slimmer, very slimmer, new Dora as opposed to the cute roundness of the 7-years old Dora. I think if they were going to change Dora, her personality should have been at least similar, if not the same. Also, the contours of her body shouldn't resemble the stick figure Barbie Dolls and Bratz Dolls that flood the preteen doll shelves. Of course, it is up to the viewers and consumers to decide, and these are just my personal opinions.

My 13 yr old daughter just saw an Explorer Girl episode for the first time and loves it. Now the problem is, there are not anymore being shown on Nick Jr. What's up with that? She keeps bugging me about it and I don't kno what to tell her.
