Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Review: A Surreal and Mind-Bending Adventure

I've been writing on various websites since 2017. Being a film buff, I like to provide thought-provoking analyses on movies and web series.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: A Surreal and Mind-Bending Adventure, Stranger Things fans will enjoy this movie. There are some strange things going on in Doctor Strange, so if you like that kind of thing, this movie is right up your alley! Just beware that some weird and disturbing images might be scary for kids and it’s rated PG-13 so I’d probably suggest it for 13+. Now that that’s out of the way let’s talk about what I liked about the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, shall we?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had many stand-out movies, but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness certainly sits at the top of the list. It’s a visually stunning, mind-bending display of creativity and genius. But, since it was released by Disney, I was hoping to see some political commentary as well, which it lacked. Here’s my full review of this fantastic movie that should not be missed by any Marvel fan.

Storyline

America Chavez is able to traverse various universes, aka the multiverse, and she is being hunted down by a demon. Strange and Wong save her, but when Strange tries to figure out the root cause of all this, it leads to bigger problems. Whether or not Strange manages to save America Chaves, or if the demon gets what it wanted, forms the remainder of the plot.

For more than five years, a standalone Doctor Strange film has not been released and all that can be said about the movie is that the fans are in for a treat. In the mix of horror, fantasy, action, and other genres, the film is well packaged to both satisfy Marvel's traditional fans, and also make sure that first-time Marvel movie viewers aren't turned off. It might be easier to say, the film does not depend exclusively on the reference from past Marvel films.

Things I liked

In this movie, Director Sam Raimi brilliantly blends superhero excitement with gut-wrenching horror in a film that connects the thrill of the superhero genre with the hair-raising, nail-biting suspense of the horror film. And John Mathieson's camera movements are beautiful and unique. There is a particular shot of Strange repairing his watch. Shooting a scene from an unconventional angle is just the kind of innovation John has in mind.

Benedict Cumberbatch brings Strange to another level and Elizabeth Olsen delivers a captivating performance that is so horrific, words cannot fully express it. STUNNING, TWISTED, and MESMERIZING best describe the on-screen performances of Cumberbatch, Olsen, and the visually stimulating kaleidoscope. It is clear that Xochitl Gomez will be a fan favorite. Danny Elfman's score blends in beautifully with the mysterious tone of the film.

Overall, The film had a lot of positives. Its visuals were stunning and seemed to be taken from the panels of a comic book. The special effects were seamless and made the action scenes that much more exciting. We also got to explore a lot of aspects of magic in the Marvel Universe that we’ve never seen before in any other film. I’m excited to see how everything will pan out as we continue with these stories in future films.

Things I didn’t like

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a mind-bending adventure through the psychedelic side of Marvel’s multiverse. The visual effects are stunning, but the story is hard to follow and doesn’t have much thematic coherence. Although I wanted to love Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I only enjoyed it.

Final Thoughts

The multiverse of Madness is an excellent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s funny, quirky, scary and a wonderful return to form for the MCU after Avengers: Infinity War. If you liked Doctor Strange in 2016, you will love him here as well. In his own universe, Dr. Strange is a fun and exciting character that has no limits. And we finally get to see some of that with The Multiverse of Madness! While it might not be able to touch Spider-Man: No Way Home, it definitely sets up great things in Phase 4!
