It's been raining in Colorado for the past two weeks and everyone is waterlogged.
But on this particular day (at 6:25 p.m. to be exact) there's an explosion in the laundry room at the Colorado State Penitentiary which results in the death of an inmate.
As the rain continues to fall, Pines Valley Mall is hours away from opening and due to the heavy rain, the Mc Kimson Dam is about to bust.
And that's just the beginning of the terror of what's about to happen for a group of people trapped in the rising water at the mall.
Plus it's Sheriff Chris Maratos' (Kai Wiesinger) thirtieth birthday.
As Sheriff Maratos tries to figure out what to do with the impending dam collapse, his wife Sheri (Shannon Sturges) hopes that he can leave soon so that they can celebrate his birthday and on her way home from volunteering at a shelter, stops at the mall to get him a birthday present.
Also in the deserted mall are singer Suzanne Price (Angeline Ball) and her manager David (Terence Maynard) who are waiting for the rest of her band to show up for a last minute rehearsal. Suzanne is quite upset because she "doesn't do mall openings" but, if you get a gig, you'd better keep it.
Its security guard Tom's (George Anton) first night on the job and as he's wandering through the mall, finds Roger Karey (David Soul) leaving a store with a new sport coat. Suspicious of Roger, he tells him to leave the mall immediately and not to come back.
Now, since the mall isn't open to the public yet, I couldn't figure out how Sheri was able to breeze in and work her way up to the second level sports shop.
She's told by employee Glen Savoy (Rob Estes) that they're closing, but she manages to pick out a present and can't seem to pay for it since the cash register and credit card machine aren't working. She pays cash and since Glen can't make change, she tells him to keep the fifty cents.
The dam collapses and within minutes, those in the mall do the typical disaster freeze and look around as the water comes crashing into the building.
They manage to make it to the second level and then learn that the prisoner from the penitentiary wasn't killed in the explosion after they change clothes and get supplies from the sporting goods store.
Roger joins the group and tells them that since he's the architect he can get them out of the waterlogged mall, but there's a problem. Methane gas is bubbling up in the water.
Once they learn the prisoner's identity, it's time to swim down to a luggage store on the first level where two suitcases contain money.
It's discovered that Sheri is the sheriff's wife and she becomes the number one hostage, but as the movie continues, they have to drag themselves through the abandoned mall heading for the roof, while also dealing with carbon monoxide.
Even though I hadn't watched this in a long while, it's a pretty good made for television disaster movie with I always thought provided good underwater sequences.
My main problem was that Sheri was able to breeze on into the mall and the dubbing is a little off with a couple of the actors, but, overall, its well worth watching every few years.
