For Billy (Atanas Srebrev) this night of working on the oil rig is going to get a whole lot hotter.

While on his lunchbreak, he's having a steamy conversation with his wife who changes into some sexy lingerie but is interrupted by Leon (Owen Davis) when he comes out onto the deck to tell him about some strange readings that he's picked up on the computer.

Annoyed, Billy hangs up on his wife and when he can't figure out what's going on, he orders Jack (Vladimir Mihaylov) to shut everything down, but it's too late as the rig starts shaking and breaks apart.

At a press conference the next day, CEO Jacob Capilla (Brad Dourif) pours out his heart about the disaster, while handing the meeting over to Ray Miller (Cleavant Derricks) who tells the press that it was a possible rogue wave that hit the platform.

Behind closed doors, however, Jacob tells Ray how everything is going to be handled.

Over at the university, Antoinette Vitrini (Rachel Hunter) scolds her sister Emily (Melissa Ordway) for getting to class right as she's wrapping up. Antoinette's taking a few select students to a swamp the next morning and due to her tardiness, Emily won't be going.

However, Emily whines and wants to know if Brandon (Griff Furst) is going. When she finds out that he's going, she begs Antoinette to tag along as some type of assistant and after all that pouting and promises from Emily, Antoinette agrees to let her go.

At the swamp, Antoinette has the student's collect samples, and she comes across an alligator that's been burned. After a quick examination (and with Brandon's double checking of her Gulf of Mexico super volcano theory) she figures that it's only a matter of time before some type of eruption will happen.

When her ex-husband Brad (J.D. Evermore) pops up in her office, he tells her that he's gone over the data and she's correct. There will be an eruption, but he lets her know that he had gotten some samples from Holter Energy and because of their drilling, they've broken through the earth's crust and magma's being released.

Since it is Miami there's a bikini contest going on over at the Beach Club Hotel, but that comes to a halt following a steam tsunami, which seems to have killed everyone at the party. No other causalities are reported throughout the city.

After he talks to Butch Sanderson (Miles Doleac) Capilla is killed due to his greed and later during a board meeting, Ray becomes the new CEO. Ray too becomes greedy and following a meeting with Antoinette and Brandon, Ray calls upon Butch to kill her.

Brad takes Emily to an abandoned missile site and the magma gets him, so as she's driving (speeding) back to the university, the bridge she's on begins to collapse.

Having been unsuccessful at shooting Antoinette, Butch has her office burned down (but the rest of the building is fine thanks to CGI smoke) and there's a twist which occurs in the movie at this point.

Emily tells her that Brad was killed by the magma and while there really isn't too much as far as disaster scenes, a mother and her son are killed when some magma flows down their street.

Antoinette comes up with a way to stop the magma and Butch takes Emily hostage, but since Emily knows what liquid nitrogen will do, she manages to throw a bucket of it at Butch and he becomes a frozen statue. Thankfully, she breaks off his arm when she takes his gun.

The plan to freeze the magma works and Miami can get back to normal.

Now, I'm not a volcanologist, but having seen a lot of volcano movies, I thought that ash only happens during an eruption. Whenever the magma is flowing down the streets, CGI ash (at times it doesn't even show up in the same scene) falls gently like snow.

There's never an eruption and as I said, there really are no disaster scenes to speak of. Plus, Antoinette isn't that caring of a teacher since her one student, Nelson (Joseph Diaz) disappears, and she doesn't know about it.

Neither do any of the other students.
