Have you ever traveled to a foreign country and wondered what would happen if disaster struck? Especially if you don't know the language?
That's what happens to Gringo (Eli Roth) who's travelling with friends Ariel (Ariel Levy) and Pollo (Nicolas Martinez) across Chile. Party/rich boy Pollo can get them into the best parties and as the movie begins, the three are partying in a packed club at four thirty in the morning.
The next day on a vineyard tour, he impresses the tour guide (Ignacia Allamand) and invites her to Valparaiso for some serious partying.
Following the tour, Pollo gets them to a concert and Gringo tries to pick up a fellow American (Selena Gomez) while Ariel scares away any conquest by talking about his ex-girlfriend.
Party girls Kylie (Lorenza Izzo) and Irina (Natasha Yarovenko) can't get into the V.I.P. area, which is fine with Kylie's older half-sister, Monica (Andrea Osvart). Kylie and Irina can't remember who put them on the guest list, but Pollo sees them and yells to the bouncer that they're with him.
Pollo invites them to Valparaiso as well since Russell Dazzle (Eduardo Dominguez) is going to be at the club to perform.
Monica tells them that they're leaving Chile, much to Kylie's protests and she calls their father. Minutes later, he wants to talk to Monica and with a victorious smile, lets the boys know that the three of them will be going with them.
During the day, the group tours the city but run into prejudice when they decide to take an incline tram up the hill. The operator (Edgardo Bruna) won't let the group onto the tram together due to occupancy.
It's designed for six and there are already two tourists onboard.
Pollo tries to bribe the operator, but he won't budge, and Gringo and Ariel tell him they'll wait for the next car, since the operator obviously doesn't like Jewish people. They tell Pollo it's fine, so Pollo offers money to the two already onboard and they get off to wait for the next car.
As the tram makes its rickety way up the side of the hill, the operator stops it midway to put a scare into them. After a few seconds he releases the brake, and they continue the climb.
Later that night around one thirty in the morning, the group enter the nightclub and Monica gives explicit instructions to the bartender (Dayana Amigo) not to serve Kylie. Since she doesn't understand English, Pollo translates by telling her to get her drunk.
Monica goes to the ladies' room and while there, the tour guide finishes up and heads out into the hallway where she aggressively pushes past a cleaning lady (Gabriela Hernandez) causing her to spill the contents. When Monica comes out, she helps her, but the tour guide is back out on the dancefloor.
Upstairs in the V.I.P. section, Monica and Kylie start to fight since Kylie is wasted. They begin to air their dirty laundry and just as it gets physical, the earthquake strikes with some really good special effects.
The bartender is trapped between the bar and a fallen shelf, with shards of glass in her back. Ariel manages to rescue her, but he loses his hand and when he starts screaming for help, she just looks and runs away.
Once the group assembles, the building starts to collapse and the exit is blocked, but the tour guide aggressively pushes people away so that she can escape, and she gets what she deserves.
From. here on out, the movie becomes a race for survival and even prior to the initial quake, there's some subtle foreshadowing, with a lot coming following the destruction. Plus, the movie does a great job with the chaos on the street.
There's a much more graphic homage to 1974's Earthquake regarding the tram, but the movie also turns into a horror movie as escaped prisoners go on a murderous, bloody rampage. With this brutality, it also becomes torture porn in a few scenes.
The beginning is a little slow since the characters are being developed and when it comes to who will survive, there are many twists and turns so you don't really know who will survive.
If you're looking for something completely different, then this is the movie for you and the downfall is a lot of it is subtitled.
