Several of the stars from Degrassi: The Next Generation have gone on to other movies and television shows. 3 of them have all been on shows on the same channel -- The CW.

A bit about Degrassi

Degrassi was a popular show that aired on Teen Nick (which used to be called The N.) In 1987, there was Degrassi Junior High, followed by Degrassi High, which ended in 1991. Some of the students included Joey, Snake, Spike, and Caitlin. At the end of the show, Spike had a baby girl, Emma. 10 years after the series ended, Degrassi:The Next Generation was born.

This show is all about Emma and her friends. The first episode was a high school reunion and almost everyone from the original series was there. Degrassi went strong for many years, but was referred to something new each season to go along with the theme for that year. For example, 2012's season was called Degrassi: New Beginnings. Netflix aired a version in 2017 titled: Degrassi: Next Class, which lasted 4 seasons long. It depicted the lives of students that were younger siblings, relatives, and friends of Emma's group, plus new characters. Degrassi had a great run over all these years.

Shenae Grimes on Degrassi

On Degrassi, Shenae played Darcy Edwards. She is a strong Christian who is involved in the Friendship club at the beginning of the show. After dating Spinner, posting pictures of herself on the Internet and getting stalked, dating Peter, getting raped at a party, attempting suicide, and falsely accusing her teacher of sexual harassment... she becomes a completely different person (go figure). She eventually tries her best to come back to herself, but finds it hard at the same place where everything happened. She leaves to go to Kenya on a mission trip. (In reality she left the show to go to another one -- 90210 on the CW.)

Shenae Grimes on 90210

On 90210, Shenae played Annie Wilson. She is a nice girl from Kansas who moves to Beverly Hills with her family to help out with her sick grandmother. She quickly makes friends and gets a new boyfriend. But after she is accused of sleeping with her best friend's boyfriend (which she didn't do,) she is isolated from every one at school. Eventually the truth comes out and she is back to being friends with Naomi again. After befriending a lady who she is working for, she gets her inheritance when the woman suddenly dies. By then, she is in college and trying to use her money to do something good by starting a charity event. 90210 ended in May 2013 after its 5th season, with Liam, Annie's long-time, on again/off again love interest, proposing to her.

Nina Dobrev on Degrassi

On Degrassi, Nina played Mia Jones. She is a young mom who got pregnant at 13 and is now trying to do her best for her daughter. She starts out in modeling and realizes this is what she wants to do. She leaves to go to Paris for a modeling job. (In reality she left the show to join another one -- The Vampire Diaries on the CW.)

Nina Dobrev on the Vampire Diaries

On The Vampire Diaries, Nina played high-school student, Elena Gilbert. After her parents die in a car accident she moves in with her aunt and younger brother. She meets and falls in love with Stefan Salvatore, who she later finds out is a vampire. She becomes good friends with his brother Damon, and eventually is caught in a love triangle between the two of them.

Nina also played Elena's look-a-like and ancestor, long-time vampire Katherine Pierce (Katerina Petrova). She also was in a love triangle with the Salvatore brothers. She was thought to be dead but she managed to escape from the fire that supposedly killed her over a hundred years before. She comes back to Mystic Falls because she says she wants to be with Stefan.

She later plays Amara as well -- the very first female immortal. She was the handmaiden for the witch, Qetsiyah. Amara fell in love with Qetsiyah's fiance, Silas (a doppelganger of Stephan's.)

Elena and her friends have faced death, deadly vampires, werewolves, and witches, and lots of heartbreak. The Vampire Diaries aired for 8 seasons. The show also got a spin-off series called The Originals, based off the original vampires in The Vampire Diaries.

Cassie Steele on Degrassi

On Degrassi, Cassie played Manny Santos. She is an outgoing wannabe-actress who is best friends with Emma. Emma and Manny go through middle and high school together and they even go to the same college once they graduate from Degrassi.

Cassie Steele on the LA Complex

On The L.A. Complex, Cassie played Abby Vargas. Just like Manny on Degrassi, Abby is a wannabe-actress. She moves to L.A. to become an actress and goes to many auditions, but either doesn't get called back or gets small, no-line parts. Abby meets an actor named Connor and she wants to be with him, but her new roommate, Nick, also wants to be with her. The L.A. Complex lasted 3 seasons.

Loved this. Used to watched degrassi and when i found outbthese three actresses were on the cw, i was so.happy for them. Love tvd and 90210. Only watched some episodes of la complex.

amandajoyshapiro on November 07, 2012:

Canadian shows have more mature storylines than American shows. The character arcs these three actresses did on Degrassi have been brought down on the CW. Plus, I remember Kristen Kreuk was on Edgemont before Smallville. What kinds of shows are on Canadian TV now?

Great article! I forgot about Nina Dobrev...I enjoy watching all of these shows...Degrassi, The LA Complex, 90210...couldn't much get into The Vampire Diaries, though.

Whoa so cool!

Francesca... 18 to Life wasn't originated on the CW. It was supposed to be a co-production between a Canadian channel CBC and the American channel ABC, but ABC dropped out and it was just CBC. Only the first 6 episodes of the show were broadcast on The CW and were supposed to continue later on with the other 6 of the first season but they never did. And the show only had 2 seasons.

Francesca on May 21, 2012:

You guys forgot to mention that stacey farber who played Ellie, also went on a cw show in 2010 called 18 to life.

I have seen a few episodes of The Vampire Diaries but I didn't have cable until recently so that is why I haven't watched it. But it will be one of the shows I catch up on watching online. I'm actually doing that with 90210 right now (the one that Shenae Grimes from this article is on.) Degrassi is a great show and Nina Dobrev was great as Mia, a teen mom and model. Have you seen her in that movie/musical she was in? The American Mall, it was called. Well thanks for the comment. Hope you do give the shows a try because they are all good.

I'm a fan of The Vampire Diaries and just thought that your hub was interesting. When I saw 'Nina Dobrev' I was glued. Love learning about all the different shows and might look them up.
