Darth Maul Vs Count Dooku

Jeremy hopes the Force is with him as he pursues a forensics career in the swamps of Louisiana.

Count Dooku and Darth Maul

Count Dooku and Darth Maul

Star Wars Duel!

Caution, spoilers ahead.
Welcome to our next Fantasy Fight! Today we have the savage Darth Maul combating his successor, the refined Count Dooku. Which of these Sith can use the dark side of the Force, and their skill with a lightsaber, to defeat the other? Lets have a look at both villains to determine the superior warrior.

Supplemental Information

1. Zabraks are a species of alien in Star Wars. They're essentially humanoids with horns on their heads, and often tattoo their bodies.

2. Saberstaffs are two lightsabers joined together to form a single double-bladed lightsaber.

3. The Trade Federation is a corrupt organization whose leaders are under the control of Darth Sidious. The Federation's leader, Viceroy Gunray, is pretty cowardly for a guy with "gun" and "ray" in his name. What's next, Darth Silvertongue, the socially awkward Sith?

4. Some sources indicate Qui-Gon received aid from the host of a certain television program:

5. Prior to Maul's match with Jinn and Kenobi, his leg had been injured thanks to a vibroax from a bandit. That bandit soon died, of course.

6. Before Star Wars Episode 4, a group called the Prophets of the Dark Side create a replica of Maul, and send him to kill Darth Vader. The two duel, and Maul gains the advantage. Outmatched, Vader only wins by shoving a lightsaber through his own body and into Maul, killing the replica but badly wounding himself.

History and Analysis: Darth Maul

The Zabrak1 infant Maul was given up by his mother to be trained as a Sith. Nice job there, Mom. Maul's new Master, Darth Sidious, proved a merciless teacher, starving and beating the child into the ultimate (and obedient) servant. Maul proved a natural with the lightsaber, and trained to become deadly with a saberstaff2. After many years of vicious practice, the apprentice began to carry out Sidious's missions. In Star Wars Episode 1, Maul is assigned to locate Queen Amidala, who has escaped the clutches of the Trade Federation3. Maul finds her on Tatooine, guarded by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Maul and Jinn have a brief and vicious duel4 that ends with Jinn escaping onto Amidala's ship. Later, Maul is ordered to guard a base on planet Naboo, and eventually clashes against Jinn and Jinn's apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in an intense battle. Maul kills Jinn and disarms Kenobi, then taunts the helpless Jedi. However, this gives Kenobi time to seize his fallen Master's saber and slice Maul in two. Of all characters in Episode 1, many of us remember Maul and his merciless fighting best (despite his what, two or three lines?). That stands as a testament to how excited we get just to see him on-screen.

Darth Maul with saberstaff

Darth Maul with saberstaff

1. Dueling. Maul is exceptionally talented at lightsaber combat. He uses the unforgiving and passionate Juyo style, which Yoda once called the "deadliest" form. We see Maul defeat two Jedi at the same time, despite his handicap5. He is shown to combine both martial arts and force techniques into his fighting style, making him all the more relentless. Maul even seems capable of overpowering Darth Vader6.

2. Force Powers. Maul shows reasonable talent with telekinetic force abilities; seen when he Force pushes Obi-Wan into a pit during their duel. He also augments his physical prowess to leap huge distances. More impressive than the strength of his techniques is the way Maul mixes them with his saber strikes, creating an unpredictable and wild assault.

1. Saberstaff. Maul's double-bladed lightsaber can defend from multiple opponents, and offer a surprise for any enemy who doesn't know about the second blade.

1. Arrogance. Maul's awareness of his abilities make him somewhat overconfident, and he'll toy with opponents before killing them. In all fairness, he only does this when he's sure they no longer pose a threat, but it's what got him chopped in half at Naboo.

Supplemental Information

1. Maul actually survived being torn in two, and is featured in the animated Clone Wars television program. For movie purposes though, Episode 1 is the last you'll see of him.

2. Anakin slices off both of Dooku's hands, then is ordered by Sidious to execute the helpless man.

3. Dooku's arrogance blinds him. I can't help but find the man shortsighted. Darth Sidious tells of his interest in Skywalker, but claims Dooku will still serve as the true Sith apprentice. Dooku, for some reason, believes his Master. You know, for a guy with "Count" in his name, he sure doesn't seem to understand that there can only be two Sith at a time. Of course, Sidious actually plots to replace Dooku with the young and powerful Skywalker, and eventually does; betrayal is the way of the Sith.

History and Analysis: Count Dooku

After Maul's death1 at Naboo, Darth Sidious needed a new apprentice. He selected ex-Jedi Count Dooku, and dubbed him Darth Tyranus. Dooku eagerly took the position, seeing an opportunity to remold the galaxy into something purer. As per Sidious's orders, Dooku united various groups to form the Separatists, a group who wished to secede from the Republic. War ensued, and Dooku served as the figurehead for the Separatist movement until his eventual demise. We see Dooku adeptly defeat Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan in Episode 2, before having to flee a duel with Jedi Master Yoda. In Episode 3, Dooku again battles Anakin and Obi-Wan. This time, Dooku brings two droid bodyguards as insurance; nevertheless, Skywalker defeats and kills the Count.

Count Dooku

Count Dooku

  1. Dueling. Dooku mastered the Makashi form of lightsaber combat, which emphasizes precise strikes and parries over speed or raw power. Dooku's talent was renowned. Perhaps his most impressive feat was dueling both Obi-Wan and Anakin in Episode 3, though he eventually perished in that battle. Dooku also briefly held his own against Yoda, but ultimately was forced (pardon the pun) to flee.
  2. Force Powers. Dooku is very skilled with Force abilities such as Push, Lightning, and Choke.
  3. Dun Möch. This term indicates psychological warfare; using words to distract your opponent. Dooku's usage of this tactic sometimes offers an edge, but proves risky (see Weakness #2.)
  4. Charisma/Wealth. Dooku has persuaded several organizations to join his Separatist cause, is looked upon favorably by most of the public, and has acquired vast wealth.

  1. Curved hilt lightsaber. Dooku's weapon features a curved hilt that fits easily into his grip.

  1. Arrogance3. Like many Sith, Dooku overestimates his skills. He is powerful, but not invincible.
  2. Goading. Dooku's Dun Möch may shatter an opponent's will, but it can backfire. Notably, when facing Anakin Skywalker, Dun Möch strengthens Skywalker's resolve rather than breaking it, and spurs him to victory.
  3. Makashi. Dooku's style, both a blessing and a curse, works well against defense-oriented lightsaber forms, like Obi-Wan's Soresu. However, it relies on redirecting enemy attacks, and has trouble doing so against brute force styles.
  4. Age. At 83 years old (in Episode 3), Dooku is long past his body's prime, and even his connection to the Force can't prevent him from tiring in battle. Dang, Dooku, you're still dueling at 83? Most seniors only battle gum disease, not Jedi. Well, at least you're not nine hundred.

Your Input

Each combatant will fight in a one-on-one match until one is killed, rendered helpless, or surrenders. Since these are Sith.. I think we know which one is gonna happen. For our setting, envision a spacious and deserted chamber aboard a starship. And now, for all fans, Fantasy Fight!

The duel's setting

And The Winner Is..

Darth Maul. Delving into lightsaber forms, we discover Dooku's Makashi to fare poorly against Maul's Juyo. Additionally, Maul is far younger, and his attacks are more unpredictable. Dooku has an edge with Force techniques, but it's not enough to defend from Maul's barrage. Don't despair, Dooku. At least you're in more than one movie, and portrayed by the awesome Christopher Lee.

For those who picked Poll Choice #3..

Thanks Miran! I agree Dooku has more knowledge of the Force, and their dueling capabilities are certainly both impressive. Glad you enjoyed it!

Miran Shuleta on February 26, 2015:

Another cool Hub, personally I think Count Dooku would win, he has more knowledge of the force than Maul and fights better.

Awesome Hub!
