Comparing Michael Jackson With Elvis Presley

Music - The Comparison - Elvis Vs Jackson

In recent times, I have come across many articles in magazines, newspapers and in online journals, in which Michael Jackson gets compared with Elvis Presley, and in a pretty casual manner too, and even a verdict passed at the end.

The verdict, has often been in favor of Michael Jackson. This of course is quite understandable as many music fans who were born in the seventies and eighties, adore him and consider him the supremo in entertainment.

Jackson certainly was a great entertainer irrespective of whom he entertained. Otherwise there would not have been massive crowds to watch him perform, and even paying exorbitant prices for tickets.

Even his albums are supposed to have generated record sales in many parts of the world. Statistics don't lie. In fact it is statistics that present the real story.

But why all this constant comparison dialogs which result in simply defeating one in favor of the other?

Well I think since they were two different stars from two different eras each of them was unique in his own ways.

There is no need to defeat one in favor of the other, and comparision does just that. So viewing each of them as unique individuals and looking at what they have done on their own would be fair to both Jackson fans as well as to Elvis Presley fans.

Examining the individual talents and the personal charisma of each of them separately would be ideal and that is exactly what we do right here although the title of this article is somewhat misleading!

About Michael Jackson

Perform he did, to please many, and he did please many, and in the process created hysteria amongst most of his fans and succeeded in capturing a continuous following from all parts of the world too.

According to unconfirmed statistics, Jackson was liked by the younger crowd like the present teenagers and those who have left their teens within the past couple of decades.

He did compose lyrics for most of the songs that he sang and thus gets called singer, songwriter, and entertainer.

"Talented," ... that was the word his fans used when discussing him.

Jackson was blessed with talent and had what it takes to be a modern day superstar. Twenty four million fans in his account was not "bad" at all.

The Music Of Michael Jackson

The Singer, Not The Song

I quit the radio with the emergence of rap music thinking that the end of music was near, convinced beyond any shade of doubt that video killed the radio star.

My collection of cassette tapes continued to be my source of music, most of which were later converted to CD format, and newer CDs of older songs were constantly being added to my collection.

More excitement came my way with the discovery of you-tube which contained many tracks that I had missed.

Although I am full of admiration for Michael Jackson and for the great qualities that he is supposed to have displayed, which have been spoken of after his death, I am somewhat vexed by this sudden trend in comparing him with Elvis Presley.

As I stated previously, they belonged to two different eras and were in totally different environments with each one of them creating his own label and identity.

Video Killed ...

Jackson was reported to have been a very nice guy, and never had been noted for any form of arrogance.

It is a fact that he was also an excellent dancer, one of the best, although I believe he never really had the singular intention of drawing attention to his prowess.

Ignoring challenges, he somewhat stayed away from competing with others as I guess his interest did not involve proving anything. He just danced to some powerful music and also "sang."

Then video barged into the music scene, placing itself unceremoniously between the musician and the music that the musician was responsible for creating.

Of course this enabled many musicians to display their other talents. Jackson was one who benefited much from this.

His dancing prowess was generously displayed on video over the next few years. This was the beginning. The start of something new.

His eccentric behavior and the quest for "perfection" where his facial features were concerned were somewhat baffling to psychologists. They pointed it to an uneasy and an unhappy childhood ... Cool!

Poor little Michael, he had not at all been happy as a child. They attribute his strange personality to a very strict father who had actually been very cruel to him in his formative stages.

Will There Ever Be Another Michael Jackson? ... Never!

Whatever the case has been, he entertained. He really did.

He made some physically impossible gyrations at speeds that would entice Kung-Fu specialists to call for closer scrutiny. He vocalised too.

The thundering rhythmic and pulsating powerful music dished out by the musicians backing him, provided him the impetus as well as the energy to "perform."

He accepted it gratefully and carried on. Fodder for fans.

Fans needed to continue being fans. He was ageing. They were too. So it did not matter. Fans will be fans.

Age is only a function of time. His fans were happy and he kept them that way.

At times he was a complete stranger to himself but never to his fans.

His musical talents were unique, and could simply not be compared with anyone. He sang and danced too, both complemented one another and underlined his superiority in his own field.

The playing field which he defined and set standards found none fit to be compared with him.

He controlled that playing field all by himself. He was clearly gifted and he gifted back too ... to all his fans!

In fact just by being himself he made sure there will never ever be another MICHAEL JACKSON!

Now ... How About Elvis Presley?

Now ... all you Elvis Presley fans listen carefully. Imagine. Imagine hard.

The stage is set, the flashing lights are on stand-by mode, the thundering pulsating music is ready to spill ... drum-roll please ... and then ... all hell breaks loose, the thunder of the music, starting off in low decibel mode, and the psychedelic lights flashing, spotlighting pre-set areas on the stage, and to an effect-creating sequence ... exactly as planned ... the music slowly gathers momentum and ... rushing on to the stage, with that unmistakable hint of a smile, confident as ever, even more today than yesterday ... is ... as always, dressed in dark blue ... ELVIS PRESLEY!!!

"Wont you wear my ring ... around your neck ... to tell the world ... I am yours, by heck! ... "

Time flies in between ... flies ... time does fly! It is Elvis after all! Can anybody else take his place? No way! Never!

Nobody can even come close ... they will burn up to cinders! Sure they would!

What's the big deal here? Well, his looks, his voice, his personality, the charisma attached, in fact everything!

" ... and let them know by the RING AROUND YOUR NECK ... Oh yeah!"

Hey! Snap out of it everybody! It was ELVIS alright!

You are perfectly right man, there will never, ever be another ELVIS PRESLEY!

... concluded

I think you are right they should not be compared and are really nothing alike. I probably like Elvis most but I do think MJ had a great talent and although Elvis may have invented the swing I would say MJ perfected it. He was a real talent on his feet Elvis could have never matched. Maybe if he had not gotten so into drugs. Their material was really not to be compared at all. Both great but so different.

They are exactly alike to let their fame go to their heads and get all messed up thinking they were beyond human. Such a shame there were so many years they had to give and have the admiration they both thrived on. So many should learn great lessons from these two. But they won't, will they?

Elvis hands down. Elvis is the highest selling artist in history. Elvis' Aloha from Hawaii concert remains the most watched concert of all time, more people tuned in to see that concert than the moon landing few years earlier. Elvis sold out over 2,000 shows. Not to mention my favorite fact, that Elvis' DVDs and countless amounts of merchandise hurt his record sales. Me being an Elvis fanatic, I have bought so much Elvis merchandise and DVDs but never bought an Elvis CD. MJ does not have merchandise to that effect and still his musical statistics are half of Elvis'. Elvis had 18 number one hits, MJ had 13. Elvis had 114 top 40 hits, MJ had less than 40. I love Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller but a man cannot call himself King from three songs. The only King will be the record breaker, the Memphis Flash.

Hi MJ4eva, thank you very much for posting this interesting information. I appreciate it very much. Cheers!

MJ 4eva on June 18, 2013:

Elvis has loads of records set in USA that'll never get beaten. MJ had potential but he didn't wanna release a record every month. In MJ prime he released albums with 4yrs gaps.He had 1 chance to make it right and set records worldwide from Thriller, Bad and Dangerous. MJ talent was untouchable there. MJ is the only artist that has sold 30m copies plus 3 times in a row. That shows the aura he had. As for on stage nothing comes near MJ. There's a lot more i can say. Don't forget MJ has highest interview ratings ever in US with 90m and his Super Bowl got 135m in US. The highest Super Bowl ratings for a half time show. These are just a few records set by MJ i've listed why he is the best ever. In US Elvis holds too much. His untouchable there. But worldwide music records set. MJ holds more records in his name. That's why his the greatest artist of all time.

You can go to poor third world countries and ask homeless beggar kids sleeping in the streets about Elvis Presley, they have no idea who he is. Ask them if they can name an Elvis song, they are clueless and have no idea who Elvis is.

But ask these beggar kids about Michael Jackson, they will say "hee-hee" "aooww" and maybe attempt to do his iconic dance moves or moonwalk. Ask them about MJ songs and they even know a few lines of BEAT IT, THRILLER, BILLIE JEAN, HEAL THE WORLD, SMOOTH CRIMINAL etc. Michael Jackson's GLOBAL fame and influence can never be matched by anyone, not even Elvis. Michael Jackson's music appeals to the taste buds of all the continents of the world.

ELVIS IS ONLY FAMOUS IN THE WESTERN WORLD AND "WHITE" COUNTRIES LIKE USA, EUROPE, U.K. etc. But Michael Jackson's fame knows no bounds. Everyone, young or old, rich or poor, black, white or asian knows who Michael Jackson is. ELVIS=famous in white countries MICHAEL JACKSON=famous worldwide.

This is not even a comparison Elvis would be so offended to be compared to a Child molester and besides that MJ couldn't shine Elvis's shoes. Also if u wanna talk numbers Elvis 1.7 Billion plus records sold plus about 300 mill. that wasn't eligible for a total of over 2 billion just in his active career 56-77. MJ 600 million 63-2009. Micheal Jackson couldn't sell a third the records Elvis sold in over twice as many years. Elvis is and always will be The King.

Excuse my English, but my mother tongue is French & I live in Europe!

I grew up with the music of M.J..but I realized many surprising things 'about this guy...One day, I saw a poster where he wore a ridiculous cape & a crown on his head?!... He changed his face? which means that he is against the creation of GOD!..

Yes, it's true ,newspapers have talked a lot about his music, but most of all of his PEDOPHILIA!..Yes, he loved children..as a lover?! not like a father.

The clip thriller marks a great sales success, but bears the signature of Satan...Marriage with Lisa Marie Presley is a farce! Everyone knows that. What a strange coincidence, because the link is the name of Presley! (For those who understand!)

His so-called children who are not even his blood..Poor kids who are born in the lie...Too late to open their eyes...

BUT Mr Elvis Presley, from the beginning of his career, people called him " The King". People all around the world loved him in an instant...

At the age of 22 "50 millions of fans can't be wrong" only in USA...in 1957!!! ..He didn't need to change his face or skin color, or what? to please..because God had created him perfect in the image of the archetypal classic beauty whom even the ancient greeks have dreamed... Just take a look at the statue of the "Apollo Belvedere" (IV° century B.C)or Hermes of Praxiteles"(IV° century B.C).. They look like Elvis, not M.J or someone else!..

Watch the concert "Aloha from Hawaii"someone in the audience gave him a real crown..but Elvis remains humble & do not put on the head!

Only a king in the soul is able to keep an open mind...Elvis always said: Jesus is THE KING! and I'm just a man!..Make comparison between a pure-blood & a donkey is a nonsense...Elvis was a pure-blood royal!

God bless Mr Elvis Presley & all his family.

Thanks for your understanding

Kind regards

Frank Lee Reed on January 08, 2012:

I acknowledge that Michael Jackson's talent was phenomenal. Michael Jackson benefited from television in the early 70's which showcased his talent (and believe me he had raw real talent). I grew up watching the TV cartoons of The Jackson 5. Elvis sang from a young age, but television didn't exist. The time period that Elvis grew up in was the midst of the Great Depression and after World War II. In July 1954 he went into Sun Studio and recorded "That's All Right" which ignited a musical revolution. When Elvis began singing society thought it contributed to juvenile delinquency and many States in the South wouldn't play his music because they considered his music to be "race" music. Elvis enjoyed the style and was not afraid to sing - and I would argue that his courage helped to further the civil rights movement that was taking hold in 1954. It is not impossible for me to believe that both these men, Elvis and Michael, entertained their fans. I do not believe it is possible to fairly compare them. Michael Jackson could sing and dance, but Elvis had charisma and pioneered many of the techniques used in the music field. Concert tours in the 1970's by a company named Concerts West was created by Jerry Weintraub specifically to bring Elvis' show on tour. AEG is a division of Concerts West and continues to bring entertainment to people. They were both great talented people who are loved by fans worldwide. Elvis out sales many entertainers every year - 34 years after his death. Michael Jackson will benefit again from the pioneering efforts Elvis Presley Enterprises has made in protecting the image of an entertainer. Lisa Marie Presley had benefited because of those efforts and I see the same happening for Prince, Paris, and Blanket. I appreciate the contributions of both.

Realtalk on December 14, 2011:

Both were great but Elvis was a limited vocalist while MJ was great at 9 years old. You can't just look at his 2nd career stage you have to acknowledge his 1st as well and there is no one remotely comparible. Imagine the 2 in their primes on stage together, MJ would sing and dance Elvis off the planet. Absolutely no comparison, MJJ is the greatest of all!

Frank Lee Reed on November 27, 2011:

To KING Michael Jackson; Michael was a very talented entertainer -- a genius. There really is no comparison. That doesn't mean that Elvis was better than Michael or vice versa. There was a time when people in Asia and Africa knew the name Elvis. His 1973 satellite concert was timed to view live in Japan and was watched by 1.5 billion people (when the population of the world was 3 billion). Michael was phenomenal. Elvis was too. Just a different era. Take the time to study both, because both had extraordinary lives and both became incredibly famous. Elvis helped to change popular culture in the 20th Century. Even Michael acknowledged Elvis' influence. It isn't bad to recognize both. I received many hours of enjoyment listening to Elvis' music. In the end, what we both have is their talent.

KING Michael Jackson on November 25, 2011:

I don't get it. MICHAEL JACKSON IS THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME AND HE IS THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN THE PLANET, PROBABLY THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. Who is elvis? Seriously, if you go to a very isolated place in, say, Asia or Africa, everyone there would know Michael Jackson. Everyone, young or old, rich or poor knows Michael Jackson because he is THE SUPREME ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME. When it comes to entetainment and performance, Michael is the symbolism of it. From what I read, Elvis is only known in america. I'm from asia and any street beggar and poverty people knows Michael Jackson

quicksand (author) on November 12, 2011:

Great indeed Frank! I see a whole lot of sense in your well balanced views. Thanks a lot for reading my article and posting such a brilliant comment.

It's well appreciated. Cheers!

Frank Lee Reed on November 11, 2011:

I was 8 years old when Elvis died. I remember the day as if it were yesterday. I learned a belief in God through his Gospel music, I learned to be respectful to others through his politeness (yes sir/no sir; thank you; etc...). Most importantly I learned the importance oh honoring my mom and dad. As a child Elvis was a superhero, but as I've grown older I see more of the human side -- the good and the bad. He is the most influential person in my life.

Now with that said, I remember hearing the news of Michael Jackson's death. It was eerily the same deja vu feelings. I had first become aware of Jackson's music when his Thriller video was released. I was a sophomore in high school. Very entertaining. Thriller really made it's mark followed by Bad. He used video to showcase his talent. In the 90's there was the marriage to Lisa Marie Presley. For me it seemed great. Then there was public ridicule and an eventual divorce.

Both of these men lived incredible lives. Both had very real human flaws as well as talent. There will never be another Elvis because the culture that existed which propelled him to fame has passed. However, he set in motion a new style of music which led to other great talents and engineering feats. There will never be another Michael Jackson because the culture that existed which propelled him to fame has passed. MTV barely plays videos anymore. However, he set in motion a new style of presenting music which led to other great talents.

So they both were great and will be eternally remembered. There will be those who like Elvis better and those who like Michael better. The debates between the most loyal will often be heated. But their legacy remain intact.

For the lucky few who were born in the late 60's and were fortunate to know how music was, how revered Elvis became after death, watching the rise of Michael Jackson, and seeing how he will be remembered is truly remarkable.

Elvis had the LP record, movies, and television to propel his career. Michael Jackson had the 24 hour MTV videos to propel his career. So who's next? Well, we've seen Justin Bieber's rise through YouTube and social media. Too soon to know the longevity rate of Bieber's career, but he is doing many of the right things. One thing is clear - each era will always have their favorite. For me it is Elvis followed by Michael. I can enjoy both without worrying which is better. I like steak and pizza - maybe not together in the same meal, but the important thing is that I like them both.

That's my opinion and I hope I articulated it well.

I'm not american or english so excuse If I don't use english corect. To say that Elvis was the greatest it's like to say that God is not which is a big stupidity.First Elvis was/is not so popular that MJ was.His popularity was around 50' and 60' and now he is listen only by most of older ages around 60' and 70' who are my granny's generation, but MJ was started when he was only 5 in 1964 and since 70' he was very popular and never stopped just now few years ago with that stupid trial plus MJ is adore and listen by many no matter ages, races or others one.Even my niece who is only 2 years old and just learned to speak know MJ and like and listen to him,but she don't know Elvis even my mom sometime listen to him(she is 58).MJ impact on music was so huge that no one could make it,even Beatles or Elvis couldn't.MJ is know over the world no matter what country even third country type like Pakistan or others.Does Elvis had the most number one hits ever? I don't think so,MJ had.Does Elvis had the most many records or is the most awarded artist of all time? No,MJ is.Does Elvis had the greatest music video of all time ? No,MJ had.Does Elvis had the best selling album of all the time ??? I don't think.Does Elvis is so popular than Mj was ? No he didn't.Does elvis had the record for the fastest tickets concert ever ? Please don't even THINK of comparing that little pedophile freak to Elvis. If Elvis were still alive, he would have personally rolled up to "never land" in his pink Cadillac, removed the Derringer pistol from his boot, and BLASTED the prosthetic rubber nose off of that little child rapists deformed, bleached-white face. He then would have proceeded to karate kick him/her/it square in the butt with his blue suede shoes.

Funny how Lisa Marie admitted to never once letting any of her children spend any time in the same room with MJ while unsupervised. Gee, I wonder why?

The only thing that sickens me more than the worlds most notorious pedophile (MJ) is the denial of his fans and/or the total acceptance of his "little habit". It's the most classic case of "Don't look at the 2 ton elephant in the middle of the room" that I have ever witnessed.

I wouldn't compare MJ to Elvis or even to my worst enemy for that matter.

No-one will ever be a star the way Elvis was a star.

That being said, MJ was a great performor, from the time he was a small child, singing and dancing with his brothers, as The Jackson Five. There is no doubt of his great talant. But he and Elvis compared to each other is like apples and oranges.

I do find it interesting that Elvis' daughter Lisa Marie was married to Mr. Jackson at one point.

Thanks for your comment, Isabelle. Elvis was, and still IS the greatest of all the solo entertainers. Cheers! :)

Isabelle22 from Somewhere on the coastline on March 27, 2010:

Nice to see more men on Hubpages without a shirt lol. I love them both especially Micheal's moon-walk although I wasn't really a fan. Still marveled at his talent.

Elvis well omg he had the looks to melt any of us women.

quicksand (author) on November 13, 2009:

Of course! No comparison. Thanks for your comment, resspenser.

Ronnie Sowell from South Carolina on November 13, 2009:

E for the win. No comparison really.

Greetings, ILOVE_MJ!

I am sure MJ would have been delighted to have a fan like you! Thank you for your comments!

ILOVE_MJ on September 22, 2009:

I liked Elvis movies and few songs of him. Since I was 12 I'm fan of Michael Jackson until now, him and I born same year. He was amazing and his music like no one else. Hard to pick a favorite song, specially the ones with messages for a better world. He was the greatest humanitarian and care so much for the children's welfare, helped children around the world and in USA. Him and Princes Diana were extremely wonderful people.

quicksand (author) on September 19, 2009:

Thanks, ElvisLady! I really like what you've written. It is indeed heartening to know that Elvis would win that contest hands down! Elvis can never ever be replaced. I appreciate your visit and comments. Cheers! :)

elvislady from IONE, California in the USA on September 19, 2009:

I Liked your hub on Michael Jackson vs Elvis Presley. Elvis wins that contest hands down in any town in the USA. When I read the part where you said, the thunder of the music, the music slowly gathers momentum. Well I got a little hot listening to your discription. I saw Elvis in 1972 and then as now the song "2001 A Space Odesy" would be playing and just the thought that Elvis was going to be there any moment, sent our hearts fluttering. What a hunka a hunka man Elvis Presley was. In 1972 he was still looking FANTASTIC. I was in the 13th row, and he had charisma like no other.

I owned a collector record store for 30 years, and it was

only about 30 miles from Santa Barbara. So you would think there would be some fans of Michael Jackson in the area. But we hardly ever sold his stuff. But I can tell you there were thousands of times we paid our store rent by selling ELVIS PRESLEY items. We went home many a nite saying, THANK YOU ELVIS, THANK YOU,VERY MUCH.

quicksand (author) on September 11, 2009:

Sure, Dyanne! Jackson had thousands of fans and you are one of them! Thanks for commenting. :)

dyanne on September 11, 2009:

quicksand (author) on September 07, 2009:

You said it Warren, Thanks! :)

Waren E from HAS LEFT THE BUILDING............ on September 06, 2009:

They can't be compared,it would be like comparing sunlight to water, both are significant and have their own value,

but as far as "preference" is concerns Elvis is the KING of ROCK and the majority:)

quicksand (author) on August 27, 2009:

Of course both of them did create a big impact in the music scene. Thanks Nancy!

Nancy's Niche on July 27, 2009:

Both were amazing talents and their demise has created a tremendous loss for the entertainment industry and fans.

quicksand (author) on July 26, 2009:

When you have the time just check out the tracks from the movie Blue Hawaii. They are available on you-tube. Thanks again, BeatsMe! :)

BeatsMe on July 26, 2009:

Hi Quicksand. I know who Elvis is. I just couldn't decide who has an edge over whom. I did look at your videos, both MJ's and EP's. Cheers.

quicksand (author) on July 25, 2009:

Phew! Thanks Dottie!

As always you have judged well and correctly too! Your visit and remarks are much appreciated. :)

Dottie1 from MA, USA on July 25, 2009:

Hmmmmmmm, tough question! (oh be quiet quicksand).

Lets see how they compare for me.

I had a friend Phil who had every song that Elvis sang but wherever our group of friends were, Phil would turn Elvis song down low and sing himself, so I know all the words to Elvis songs but to the voice of Phil! There was no arguing allowed when Phil was around to what we would listen to. Phil was so in love with Elvis!

Now Michael Jackson, I was not a fan but I did discover one day on radio while doing my aerobic workout that there was nothing compared to MJ music to get a full beautiful figure. So I was enticed to invest in Michaels music!

So where does that leave me, who do I like the best? Sitting here quietly listening to quicksand's selection of youtube videos of the two, it is without doubt that Elvis has won me over! So that's what Elvis sounds like! LOL

quicksand (author) on July 25, 2009:

O Prophet Feline! How right you are, Elvis is matchless indeed, in every respect! Thanks for your remarkable remarks! :)

Feline Prophet on July 24, 2009:

Granted MJ was a great entertainer...but Elvis had a certain something that no one else will ever quite match! And that killer smile! :)

quicksand (author) on July 24, 2009:

Hi BeatsMe! Thanks for showing interest in Elvis Presley. :) Check out a few of his tracks like the slow ones on this page, and then listen to all his tracks from the movie Blue Hawaii!

After that please visit my hub and leave another comment! Thanks for your visit! :)

quicksand (author) on July 24, 2009:

Hi Shall, thanks for checking out my article, and thanks a lot for all the nice things you have said about Elvis Presley! :)

Shalini Kagal from India on July 24, 2009:

OK - I'm going to be difficult and not vote because I like both. Elvis had some great songs and MJ had some great moves. They're both up there - now I'm out of here before you gnash your teeth and come after me LOL!

BeatsMe on July 24, 2009:

Well, the third part of your poll should've fit my answer best, except the last sentence (Elvis has a slight edge). I really don't know about that. :)

I think the media really can't help comparing them because they're both very famous.

quicksand (author) on July 24, 2009:

I am really glad you do! Thanks for commenting too! :)

Dave McClure from Worcester, UK on July 24, 2009:

I liked the 1970s Elvis best. He had some great songs in that era.
