The MCU is one of the best entertainment franchise in the world, and the among numerous reasons is, their characters and how they are made
Facts you didn’t about Black Widow
The deadly Russian spy and longtime S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Black widow a. k. a. Natasha Romanoff is one of the most renowned characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being featured in movies like The Avengers, Iron man 2, Captain Marvel, Thor Ragnarok, Captain America: Winter soldier as well as Civil War, being played by one of the very best in the film industry (Scarlett Ingrid Johansson) She has interacted with iconic characters like Iron Man (Tony Edward stark), gone toe-to-toe with one of S.H.I.E.L.D’s best marksman, Clint “Hawkeye” Barton and even had a romantic affair with the Winter Soldier himself (Buck Barnes), and with the release of the new Black Widow movie on the July 9th, movie addicts and marvel fans alike will get to see this Russian spy from a whole new perspective. We can get an insight into her origin as a spy, her strengths and weaknesses and the ideologies she holds true, but before we sit down with some popcorn and spend the next (2) hours of our lives enjoying the movie, here are some facts about our beloved Black Widow.
No 1: Black Widow's real name isn't Natasha Romanoff?
Fans of the entertainment franchise would be shocked to know that Black Widow’s name isn’t Natasha Romanoff, as she is called throughout the franchise, but rather Natalia Alianovna Romanova, this was adopted in order to avoid the enemies she made as a member of the red room project that she underwent, as well as keep her real identity a secret, however some might argue that the name change came as a result of her wanting to put her past behind her as well as giving her a chance to start afresh, to be reborn and seek sanctuary from her crimes, the name change might have been a small step to her long-term redemption.
No 2: She can wield Mjolnir too?
Thor’s most prized weapon, Mjolnir, the enchanted weapon forged by Odin, the king of Asgard himself, has been wielded by numerous MCU characters throughout the franchise including the likes of Hera in Thor: Ragnarök, the super soldier “Captain America” in Avengers: Endgame, Vision in The Avengers: Age of Ultron as well as our lovable S.H.I.E.L.D agent Black widow, yes, THE Black Widow. This happened in chapter three of Marvel’s ‘What If Age of Ultron’ comic. In that comic issue, the earth was on the brink of annihilation, most of the Avengers were killed, leaving only Nick Fury, Falcon and a few other MCU characters to face the Frost giant army. With no other alternative, Natasha runs to the spot Mjolnir is and lifts it without hesitation, this immediate action transforms her appearance and gives her powers comparable to Thor, instantly turning the tide of the battle, saving the world
No 3: She also dated Bucky Barnes
Natasha has had her own share of romantic escapades in the MCU, she’s dated the likes of the billionaire Tony Stark, the "man without fear' dare devil, and even the famous "winter soldier" (Bucky Barnes) himself, Natasha met the enigmatic soldier in the Uncanny X-men in #236 when Bucky was brought in as part of the training program, and built a romantic bond that existed throughout the comics, proving themselves to be more than weapons of war but rather individuals that have human feelings and emotions and also express themselves like every human does.
No 4: I thought she was 26?
Well this fact wouldn’t really come as a surprise to most marvel fans, in the comics Natasha was born in 1928 during WWII, she was rescued by the USSR and taken into the Black Widow program where she had her memories altered and was engineered to be a killing machine, it was during this time that she was a given a super soldier serum ( like Captain America’s) that boosted her abilities, allowing her to have a better healing factor, faster reaction time and as the title suggests “slowed aging” that last ability allows her to age slower than other people, giving her the looks of 26 year old lady, when she is in fact older than your grandma.
In conclusion Natasha is one of the greatest female characters in the MCU since her very first appearance and over the decades she has been known to be ingenious when dealing with tasks, whether it be running from her past, having a love life with Bruce banner or dating a super rich billionaire, one thing that fans can appreciate is her growth throughout the franchise, transitioning from a two-timing-traitor, to one of the MCU's most loved character, and that above all else is what makes black widow such a beautiful work of art.
