'Black Panther' Review

Black Panther is one of the most original and refreshing films of the 21st century. Just when you thought superhero movies were recycled plots and villains, BAM! Black Panther shows there is still creativity out there.

I enjoyed almost everything about this film. The acting was brilliant. Chadwick Boseman was fantastic. He behaved the way you would want a true leader of a nation to behave, and his portrayal of T'Challa is perfect. Michael B. Jordan was menacing. Probably the best villain in the MCU to date. Personally I am fond Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), especially in this movie. I thought him and Michael B. Jordan were a frightening dream team of bad guys. T'Challa's little sisiter Shuri (Letitia Wright) was also another bright spot for me in this film. Her and Boseman had terrific chemistry and you got the feel they really were brother and sister. She was the nerdy little sister who could tease the king of Wakanda and it would make him kind of feel just like a regular guy so that was nice to see. Another character who was one of my favorites was Okoye (Danai Gurira) She was the ultimate bad ass in this movie. This movie was filled with a great cast of supporting characters from Forest Whitaker to Lupita Nyong'o and Daniel Kaluuya. The list goes on and on.

The direction of Ryan Coogler was another stand out of this film. Black Panther was only his third feature film in which he directed. The first being Fruitvale Station and the second being Creed. Both of which featured Michael B. Jordan (Fun Fact) I had high hopes for Black Panther as his previous films were both quite good. Coogler did not disappoint. His interpretation of Wakanda is brilliant. From the sets to the costumes and the traditions that are held so dearly by the citizens that live there. It was so nice to see an African nation that was striving and not struggling like we mostly see in movies these days. As far as the visuals go it is the most original and stunningly visual movie I have seen since Avatar. The soundtrack was also brilliant. Kendrick Lamar provided a cool soundtrack mixed with the beautiful sounds of some African musicians. It really blended quite nicely.

All that being said I only found one thing that I did not love about the movie. The CG at times was a bit dodgy. It reminded me of some early 2000's movies where the technology just was not quite there yet. Marvel movies traditionally have pretty good CG so I was a bit surprised by that. I was so enticed in the scenes that it did not ruin the scenes or anything. That just tells you how good the storytelling and the action really was.

5 out of 5.

I usually have trouble rating a movie perfect. This movie was just everything that I like and then even more. The message that it sends is powerful and it really gets you thinking. But it is also just an achievement in film making, and a wonderful film all around.
