New Black Panther Identity in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The trailer for the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was finally released at the San Diego Comic-Con 2022 event ahead of its release next November.

Through this trailer, we can see a number of moments that are quite curious. However, the most curious moment occurs at the end of the trailer when a mysterious character appears wearing a Black Panther costume.

Just a reminder, Chadwick Boseman as the actor T'Challa passed away in 2020. Marvel Studios also agreed not to replace T'Challa's cast and instead make the character also be told to die in the film later. So, the mysterious figure we see at the end of the trailer is the new Black Panther who continues T'Challa's struggle.

The identity of T'Challa's successor was not revealed in the trailer,

The identity of T'Challa's successor was not revealed in the trailer, which made fans wonder. However, the identity related to the mysterious figure was recently allegedly revealed through leaks of the official LEGO toys of the film as uploaded by The Direct.

In the photo of the toy, we can see a set featuring Shuri, Namor on his throne, and an Atlantean warrior. Interestingly, Shuri wore a special black costume with purple and gold patterns on her legs. The existence of the golden pattern is also similar to the costume of the new Black Panther as we see in the trailer.

Marvel Studios and Letitia Wright as Shuri have not confirmed whether T'Challa's sister will use the superhero identity

Marvel Studios and Letitia Wright as Shuri have not confirmed whether T'Challa's sister will use the superhero identity. However, in the comic version Shuri was indeed T'Challa's successor as Black Panther. So, Shuri is indeed the most potential character to use the superhero identity in the film later.

4 New Black Panther Main Candidates in Wakanda Forever

T'Challa's replacement as Black Panther in Wakanda Forever remains an enigma. Although Marvel comics have indicated that T'Challa's sister, Shuri, will be the successor, Marvel Studios' tendency to change the story line is a twist of its own. This gave rise to a number of main candidates who emerged as candidates for the new Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

T'Challa actor aka Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, died in 2020 from colon cancer. After Chadwick's death, Marvel Studios confirmed that they would not be re-casting T'Challa. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever aims to carry on the legacy of the actor and character he brought to life. The Black Panther title will continue and take on a new character, something the MCU is currently working on.

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer provides

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer provides a new Black Panther cut at the end of the trailer. However, they did not reveal who was behind the mask.

Although not 100%, but many speculate that the person behind the costume is a woman. There are a number of candidates for who this character is, but that doesn't rule out other candidates who are fan favorites either. Who are the leading candidates for the new Black Panther in Wakanda Forever? Here's the review!

4. M' Baku

M'Baku is a popular idea for ruling Wakanda. However, in the Wakanda Forever trailer, the throne of Wakanda is currently in the hands of Ramonda, T'Challa's mother.

This means that the Jabari leader has not yet sat in that chair. Some have theorized that Ramonda's speech actually occurred in a flashback of Thanos' snap. Earlier this year, there were reports that M'Baku's cast, Winston Duke, was being built for a wider role in Wakanda Forever.

From the Black Panther 2 trailer, the person in the new Black Panther costume doesn't seem to have the same physique as Winston. Technically, M'Baku cannot become a Black Panther because Jabari worships the gorilla god Hanuman, not the panther god Bast.

3. Okoye

Okoye is one of the fan favorite characters in the MCU

Okoye is one of the fan favorite characters in the MCU. He survived Thanos' snap and had a pretty big role in Avengers: Endgame.

In the film, the leader of Dora Milaje said that he was dealing with problems in the middle of the sea, which was confirmed as an indication of Namor's appearance.

Okoye definitely has the ability to put down his spear and choose a Black Panther costume. However, Okoye was a soldier who had great respect for the code of honor.

It seems, he would prefer to return to the table as a supporter, not as a main player. Moreover, he was able to get his own story with the appearance of Aneka—a combat instructor and elite member of the Midnight Angels.

2. Nakia

Nakia has taken the name Black Panther

The one who was secretly watching from the outskirts was Nakia. Since she wasn't involved in the last two Avengers films, Nakia doesn't really stand out. Most recently, he was seen in Black Panther helping T'Challa open Wakanda to the world.

In the Wakanda Forever trailer, Nakia is seen in the opening scene watching the ocean and seems to be mourning T'Challa's death. Theorists feel this scene actually emerged from the very last scene of the film. They suspect, in that scene, Nakia has taken the name Black Panther.

Just like Okoye, Nakia is very skilled in combat. But, compared to Okoye, his bond with T'Challa will make a warm twist because of their love affair. Just like the Valkyrie who became the King of New Asgard, Nakia also has the political power to lead a new era of Wakanda.

This will be very different from the comics where Nakia becomes an evil character named Malice. Even so, the heroic Nakia is unlikely to be evil in the MCU.

1. Shuri

Shuri is the strongest candidate to replace T'Challa as Black Panther

Shuri is the strongest candidate to replace T'Challa as Black Panther. There are many supporting factors, including that he is the younger brother of Black Panther. After all, Marvel comics have proven that Shuri once replaced T'Challa as Black Panther.

In the comics, Shuri takes over the role of Black Panther when T'Challa is attacked by a group of supervillains known as the Cabal—including Namor—and falls into a coma. Shuri originally couldn't bond with the Heart-Shaped Heard, But after a noble sacrifice, she was officially able to gain her powers.

In the MCU, Killmonger destroys the Heart-Shaped Herb. The book The Wakanda Files confirms that Shuri was unable to recreate the sacred plant. But, Shuri is a genius. The Wakanda Forever trailer shows off the new costumes.

With Shuri's ability to create T'Challa costumes, she is clearly a botanist as well as a great tailor. The new costume indicates that the wearer is a woman.

Special Mention: Erik Killmonger

Erik Killmonger is dead in Black Panther (2018)

Erik Killmonger is dead in Black Panther (2018). However, the existence of multiverse and variants makes fans of this character still have high hopes that he will appear again in the MCU.

Killmonger is praised for breaking the curse of the MCU villains and is considered one of the best. He is one of the fan favorites to replace T'Challa as Black Panther.

Technically, Killmonger is worthy of inheriting the throne of Wakanda. If he came back, then he would obviously turn over a new leaf. He is indeed dead and Wakanda Forever doesn't seem like a movie that will dive into the multiverse.

However, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness already provides an overview of the Illuminati. So, it's possible that the Killmonger variants will join, instead of reviving the old Killmonger.
