When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.

They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,

Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.

Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;

Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,

Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,

Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,

And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.

Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Thanks a million $ for this song title, RolyRetro, for I've not heard it. Now I will look for it on YouTube.

RolyRetro from Brentwood, Essex, UK on September 18, 2012:

Money's Too Tight To Mention by British band Simply Red should be on the list, this is a great song from 80's ginger wonder Mick Hucknall.

Roly

YES! I'd forgotten that one. Thanks very much.

Kelly Umphenour from St. Louis, MO on September 18, 2012:

Awesome hub! The only one I can think of that you didn't hit was Rich Girl by Hall and Oates. I love several of the songs you mentioned!

Patty Inglish MS (author) from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 18, 2012:

Hey, Everybody!

Thanks for all the comments and additional "money" songs. I'll add what we've accumulated at the end of the week. Hope we find a lot more as well.

I'm wondering if there were money songs in the Roaring 1920s? Or maybe the Gold Rush?

CJ Baker from Parts Unknown on September 18, 2012:

Great list, I really enjoyed the hub. I was also planning on writing a hub about money songs as well (even have the title saved), but you beat me to the punch. I will have to decide whether or not I still will.

It is also good to note that Money by the Flying Lizard was originally recorded by Barrett Strong in 1959. The Beatles also had a notable cover of it in 1963 (along with numerous other artists). Of course The Flying Lizard's version is really cool as well.

Thomas Silvia from Massachusetts on September 18, 2012:

The Offspring one is my favorite, though. I feel like singing along to it right now...

An extensive list of songs with money in the title! Bravo!!

Patty Inglish MS (author) from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 18, 2012:

Oh yes, I am sure that song would count, at least for the songs about money. Thanks for adding that one, too. When you remember the rest, post them in this thread.

When we accumulate a few more, I'll look up all the dates and post them in the lists. I am trying to find the OLDEST one right now and will try some sheet music sites.

Carolee Samuda from Jamaica on September 18, 2012:

Hi Patty, would the song by Jessie J. - Price Tag count? I love that song. We have some money songs of our own but honestly can't remember them right now...lol..

I love the Abbah money song. There is another I don't see on the list but don't remember the artist or the lyrics either. I never knew that these money songs dated back that far. I guess money has always been on our minds...lol

Patty Inglish MS (author) from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 18, 2012:

Unnamed Harald - Thanks, it was in the other answer to the HubPages question; but now we have it here as well.

Patty Inglish MS (author) from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 18, 2012:

Faith Reaper - It's a fun song, isn't it? Some of the more recent songs have some pretty explicit lyrics! Not so much fun there.

carol7777 - Thanks very much. I just barely remember seeing "Cabaret" once, but the money song is very funny.

David Hunt from Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 18, 2012:

Great list and interesting hub... but you forgot "Money" by Pink Floyd.

carol stanley from Arizona on September 18, 2012:

Great videos and photos..And I love your creative idea for a hub. Voting up and sharing.

These songs brought back a lot of memories. I had to laugh when I saw that video of, "I Wanna to be Rich." I had forgotten all about that one. Very clever. Voted Up In His Love, Faith Reaper
