Top Ten Best Family Halloween Movies

Looking for the Best Family Halloween Movies to Watch?

You've come to the right place if you're looking for a line-up of the best family Halloween movies to watch for this Halloween. You may have a family ranging from young children to older children, maybe even a husband or wife that you can't tell what age they are...but either way, you want to find the best family Halloween movies that you're entire family can watch and enjoy together.

The problem that many people run into when looking for the best family Halloween movies is that many Halloween movies are just too scary or too gorey for younger children to watch. Some adults don't even enjoy watching too scary or gorey movies for that matter. So once you eliminate all of the scary and gorey movies such as Saw, The Omen, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Nightmare on Elm Street, Lost Boys, etc. what is left in the realm of Halloween movies? A bunch of cheesy, cartoon movies for preschoolers which will not appease the adults, much less the entire family.

After scouring the internet and my personal movie collection, I waded and sifted through the Charlie Brown Halloween movies, I pushed aside the outdated Ernest movies, and came up with my top ten best family Halloween movies list. I'll tell you a little bit about each family Halloween movie and why I chose it for the top ten best family Halloween movies. The majority of the top ten best family Halloween movies can be purchased on DVD and VHS, with one being left out of the DVD list (The Halloween Tree). Amazon also has many of these movies in Blu-ray for those of you who are looking for the best picture, too.

1. Hocus Pocus

Starring Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Bette Midler, this fun movie is about three witches who return from their graves in the 20th century. They are back from their graves with a goal...to steal the lives of children so that they may live forever; however, there is a small group of children, accompanied by a motley crue of zombies and talking cats, that are there to stop the three witches. Watch their fun antics and elaborately decorated scenes. This is number one on my list of top ten best family Halloween movies because of the level of humor and good ol' Halloween fun!

2. The Witches

Anjelica Houston stars in this film suited for the entire family this Halloween. Filled with witches and boys who are turned into talking mice, your family will be sure to enjoy watching this movie this Halloween. Anjelica Houston's great acting is why this is number two on my top ten best family Halloween movies list.

3. The Addams Family

They're creepy and their cooky, they're altogether spooky...the Addams Family. Who doesn't love The Addams Family, both classic and new? And what a perfectly fitting family Halloween movie! And again, thanks to Anjelica Houston! The Addams Family is number three on my top ten best family Halloween movies, though I'm thinking about moving it up to the number one spot after watching it again!

4. Casper

Casper was actually my younger brother's favorite Halloween movie when we were kids. I think he had a crush on Christina Ricci, though. Minus the crush, this movie is cute and adventurous and also one of the best family Halloween movies of all time.

5. Monster House

Monster House is a relatively newer Halloween movie and is an animated film. The kids in the Monster House movie are quite endearing and all of your children will surely love this Halloween movie. Monster House is exciting and that is why I've made it number five on the top ten best family Halloween movies.

6. Halloween Tree

Unfortunately, Halloween Tree can only be found on VHS. Apparently they haven't made it into a DVD just yet, but we need to beg them to do so! This movie is wonderful in teaching children and the whole family about the origins of Halloween...going back to the ancient times! For its educational and unique qualities, Halloween Tree has made my number 6 on the top ten best family Halloween movies.

7. The Monster Squad

Though this family Halloween movie was made in the 80s, it is humorous and nostalgic. I will say that it might not be appropriate for children under eight...but if you have mostly older children, this movie will provide some chills and thrills this Halloween. Because of its nostalgic factor, I've rated The Monster Squad as number 7 on the top ten best family Halloween movies list.

8. The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas will go down in movie history as a classic, through and through. If you've ever seen Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, you'll know why I say that. This creepy and musical movie is fit for the entire family and is one of the best family Halloween movies your family will ever watch together. Don't pass this movie up this Halloween!

9. The Corpse Bride

The Corpse Bride is number nine on the top ten best family Halloween movies list because it was Tim Burton's second animated masterpiece. Though not as good and unique as The Nightmare Before Christmas, it is another wonderful family Halloween movie. The ghostly dog is adorable and you'll fall in love with this family Halloween movie, and so will your family.

10. Igor

Igor is a movie that I actually have not seen but of which I have heard rave reviews. This movie is number ten on my best family Halloween movies list because of its family-appealing qualities and because Disney will be airing it this month! Check out your TV listings and TIVO it, folks!

11. Frankenweenie

This is a fairly new animated movie, but has gotten rave reviews on Netflix and elsewhere. It is in black and white, which my daughter has stated she doesn't like but the movie is fairly well done. The storyline is great and the kids will love it. You can get it on demand or rent it for a good price. It's the story about a boy and his dog...dead dog, that is.

12. Edward Scissorhands

While an older movie that seems like it might be inappropriate, it's actually not too bad for parents and older kids to watch. I'd recommend anyone over the age of 13, though. Johnny Depp plays a man with scissors for hands in this movie. It's haunting and sad.

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

Cresentmoon2007 from Caledonia, MI on October 09, 2011:

Interesting, I am glad that it shows the pagan origin of Halloween. That's great!

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on October 09, 2011:

Crescentmoon2007 - The cartoon network one is REALLY good, as it introduces Halloween's Pagan and ancient origins including the ancient Egyptians and the mummification process, the ancient Druids & the festival of Samhain, etc. I guarantee you would love it, too. If only it was on DVD! Blessed Be!

Cresentmoon2007 from Caledonia, MI on October 09, 2011:

I am stoked for this coming Halloween and love almost all of the above movies except for the cartoon network one, I haven't seen that one before. I actually like the Halloween Town series too, especially for families.

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on October 09, 2011:

Ehh...that movie was a bit too frightening for me as a kid. I had nightmares about Edward Scissorhands! LOL

Chris Weatherley from Rickmansworth on October 09, 2011:

I would add Edward Scissor-hands to this list too. :) Happy Halloween!
