Best Comedy Songs of Bollywood
Bollywood music is spread across the whole spectrum of "NAVRASAS" or nine essential human emotions, one of which is "HASYA" or humour. When great singers and music composers joined hands with some of the best comic actors in the Bollywood movies, they produced some great hilarious musical numbers that have continued to regale and entertain millions over the last several decades.
These songs do not have any set theme or the crass shortcuts of the type that we often come across. It is not for nothing that comedy is considered the most challenging aspect of performing arts. The greatest pieces of comedy are those that do not get boring, even when you watch them again, again and again! Invariably, these are pieces of innovations that others do not even dare to imitate ! Even bigger is the challenge is to produce comedy through music, and the best comedy songs that are able to achieve this are not just great musical scores but also excel in their creativity.
Here is a collection of the best Bollywood comedy songs... the ten best ever !
AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY (1977)
My name is Anthony Gonzalves ...
This great song is the result of two genius talents joining hands - Kishore Kumar whose innovative singing makes him the heart and soul of many great comedy songs, and Amitabh Bacchan, the greatest ever star of Bollywood till date. many feel that Amitabh's great talent for comedy has always been overshadowed by his angry young man's image. Not in this number, though ... It is a song that will always lighten up your mood, even if you know nothing about what is happening in it. This song has lyrics written by Anand Bakhshi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. ...an eternal number that will never fade away ...
SHREE 420 (1955)
Mera Joota Hai Japani...
You can appreciate the influence of this number by the fact that it is still popular in many parts of the world - more than six decades after its release, and among people who know nothing about Bollywood. When you know that, you can imagine how popular it could have been then, even without globalization, TV channels and internet !! It is almost the song that defined Raj Kapoor and identified him with the Charlie Chaplin Act. It is an extremely melodious number, sung by Mukesh and composed by Shankar Jaikishan. Its lyrics were written by Shailendra. This song established a landmark in comedy songs that has not been easy to match.

Aiyaiyah karoon mein kya ..suku suku...
This song from the movie JUNGLEE remains a perennial reminder of what great music masters can do. It is another dimension of the greatness of Mohammad Rafi, who could act with his voice - something that he does with great aplomb in this hilarious number. His genius is equally complemented by Shammi Kapoor (the lead actor), who in the movie, is trying to convince his would be wife that he is insane - in order to deter her. What the duo does, in fact, is to create an evergreen entertainer that can bring smiles on the face of even the most boring sceptic. Composed by Shankar Jaikishan and written by Shailendra, this number has a bonus in the form of Helen and a great stage dance.
CHALTI KA NAAM GADI (1958)
Main Sitaron ka Tarana .....

AAP KI KASAM (1974)
Jai Jai Shiv Shankar ....

This unique number mixes uninhibited carelessness with romance, dance and music to produce an extraordinary amalgam of musical comedy. Composed by R D Burman, and directed by J Om Prakash, this song is about newly weds who go to a temple and get intoxicated with Bhang (fresh Cannabis leaves), a traditional intoxication often used in India by Shiva devotees. Their careless singing and dancing is a treat, the duet is just divine and the background just adds to the wonder that this song is! its lyrics are written by Anand Bakhshi. Ek chatur naar....
This must be a contender for the best ever comedy song of Bollywood. It has great singing by Kishore Kumar and Mannade, and great acting stuff by Mehmood and ... Kishore Kumar again. The movie, one of the best comedy movies ever, was directed by Jyoti Swaroop, while music is composed by R D Burman, and its hilarious lyrics are by Rajinder Krishna. The song depicts a musical competition between the main protagonist (acted by Sunil Dutt), who cannot sing and hence get his friend (Kishore) to sing as a proxy (while he pretends to sing), and Mehmood, the music teacher of the "Padosan" (meaning neighbouring lady). Exhilarating! This movie is also one of the best comedy movies of Bollywood.
YES BOSS (1997)
Main Koi aisa geet gaoon .....
If you wish to understand why Shahrukh Khan has reigned over Bollywood for two decades, this is the number you need to watch. A great comic song depicts the ultimate romantic protagonist, who is ready to go to any extent for the sake and happiness of his love (acted by Juhi Chawla)! The context is that of an employee who loves a girl, who happens to the girlfriend of his Boss. With some trickery, he gets a chance to escort her, but must now make her day by his company ! Sar jo tera chakraye ....
This song is great because of its simple composition and an extremely effective comic act by Johny Walker, who is acting as the head Masseur in this number, and sings this song to attract prospective clients. It is his comic acting as a masseur trying to convince his prospective clients that combines with some great music, the genius of Mohammad Rafi as a singer and the direction of Guru Dutt, one of the greatest directors of Bollywood, that created this evergreen entertaining number. Its music was composed by S D Burman while its lyrics were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Babu samjho ishare ...
Another hilarious number from CHALTI KA NAM GAADI, one of the first great comedy movies of Bollywood. It is the story of three bachelor brothers who run a mechanic outlet, and the song is an expression of their antics that regale the masses with creative humor throughout the movie. It is great music too, as Mannade joins Kishore Kumar in the singing department, while Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar join him in acting - both were Kishore's brothers in real life too!
