Best Classical Songs of Bollywood in Raag Yaman Kalyan
Raag Yaman Kalyan is one of the popular raagas in Bollywood. During the fifites, sixties and early seventies, it was one of the favourite raagas of music composers, in partcular those who depended on Hindustani Classical to bring class to their compositions. The numbers composed in this evening raag have a soothing effect and can bring peace and harmony to your mood, even when the numbers depict strong and maybe even disturbing emotions.
Here are the ten best classical numbers in Raag Yaman Kalyan. These songs preserve the integrity of the raag to a reasonable extent, though one must remember that Bollywood music is not exactly a pure classical rendtition of Hindustani Classical music.
It would not be out of place here to note that we have not included songs composed in Raag Yaman in this list, even though most observers accept that it is better to classify Raag Yaman and Raag Yaman Kalyan as one, since the difference between the two may not be distinctive enough to classify them as different raagas. We would prefer to leave that discussion for the experts, and instead focus on enjoying some great music ....
movie: PARICHAY (1972)
Beeti na bitayi raina .....
.This great song is one of the all time masterpieces. It is great because of its simplicity and the way its music blends with the lyrics to make a union of thoughts, expressions and melody. Such harmony takes the tranquility inherent in Raag Yaman Kalyan to an even higher plane, giving the song an almost divine feel. The music of this number was composed by R D Burman and lyrics written by Gulzar, while the number was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupinder. A number you can never get tired of listening !
movie: CHORI CHORI (1957)
Rasik balma .... Dil kyon lagaya ....
A great number, one of the best classical songs by Lata Mangeshkar. It is the expressions brought out in addition to the effects of the Raag Yaman Kalyan that give this song its extraordinary quality. The raag brings the feel of love into the distraught emotions so effectively expressed by the singer and brought out by the lyrics. The wonderful music of this song was composed by Shankar Jaikishan, while the lyrics were writtten by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Ja re badra bairi ja....
Another classical rendering by Lata Mageshkar, from the stable of Madan Mohan, and as usual, their combination delivers a great masterpiece. This number could qualify anyday as one of the great semi-classic renditions for the purists. The mastery of Lata Mangeshkar over classical raagas becomes all too apparent in this number even though the number is presented in a way that would not let it deviate too much from the popular taste of the masses. The lyrics of this number were written by Rajinder Krishna.
movie: SHOR (1972)
Ek pyar ka naghma hai ...
A mainstream Bollywood music with excellent use of a classical raag. This number, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh, has two different moods in the same song - the first is in Shringaar (decorative) ras , while the second is in Karun (sad) ras , and the factor that remains common to both is love, something shared with Raag Yaman Kalyan, thereby making the lyrics, music, moods and expressions of this number gel into one great song on screen. The lyrics are written by Santosh Anand, while the music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal .

movie: SARAWATICHANDRA (1968)
Chandan sa badan, chanchal chitvan ....
One of the best songs ever heard in the voice of Mukesh, who was as good with classical based numbers as with anything else. The lyrics of this number as well as the screenplay are soaked in romance from end to end, making it a perfect foil for Raag Yaman Kalyan, the romatic evening raag of Hindustani music. The romantic music of this song was composed by Kalyanji Anandji , and the excellent lyrics written by Indeewar. An all time classic.
movie: ARDHANGINI (1959)
Bade bhole ho ....
A classical song in the bhajan mode, with a number of complex emotions interwined in its rendering and expressed with music. Lata Mangehkar sung this number on music composed by Vasant Desai, for whom she sang a lot in her initial years. The lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. One of the best numbers in Raag Yaman Kalyan, it has many variations that add to its elegance, without altering the simplicity that makes this song such a pleasure to listen.

movie: CHANDI KI DEEWAR (1964)
Ashkon mein jo paya hai ...
This song tells us why Talat Mahmood was one of the best choices for songs based on classical music during the early fifties, specially after the untimely demise of K L Saigal. Had it not been for his smoking habits, he may have been known for many more songs like this number - a great rendering with great mastery over the raag and sung in a manner that touches your heart. Its lyrics were written by Sahir Ludhianwi and the music was composed by N Dutta. His voice gives the musical composition an attractive serenity and together they make an exceptional number.
movie: AMAR (1954)
Jaane wale se mulaqat na hone payee ...
Another touching rendition by Lata Mangeshkar in Raag Yaman Kalyan, with very impressive lyrics written by Shakeel Badayuni. The music of this great number was composed by Naushad. This number is one of the few ones that has an effect that is less calming and more disturbing, but credit must go to the singer who has caught the essence of the song and made that extra effort to convey emotions as strongly as the context required in this song. A song with slow but lasting impact !

movie: SARANGA (1960)
Saranga teri yaad mein ....
This great number sung by Mukesh is so extraordinary because it blends the sadness inherent in its lyrics and voice of the singer in such a way into Raag Yaman Kalyan that it almost get subjugated to it. That is what makes sad songs in Raag Yaman Kalyan so exceptional - it enables piece and harmony even in sadness. The expression that comes out is not one of desperation and restlessness, it is one of loss that has already been internalized and which is in the process of getting sublimnated through music. The music of this number was composed by Sardar Malik , and the lyrics were written by Bharat Vyas .
movie: JANTAR MANTAR (1964)
Janewale laut ke aana ....
An impressive rendering of Raag Yaman Kalyan by Asha Bhonsle. This number greatly preserves the integrity of the raag. This number tells us what Bollywood missed by not having more songs from Asha during those times, when she was largely preferred for lighthearted songs. It was later, in the eighties that she came to occupy the centrestage of Bollywod, but by then most to the great classical composers had disappeared. The lyrics are written by Hasrat Jaipuri and the music is composed by Sardar Malik.
