Shree 420 (1955)

Ichak Dana Beechak Dana

A classic in every sense, this song addresses the way riddles help kids imagine and learn, but there is a lot more to it. There are many subplots unfolding side by side, in the form of a love story. Open sky schools are still a reality in many villages, but in the '50s they were almost a universal phenomenon. School teachers were not discouraged, however, as in this number. Some of the former students of such schools can vouch that some of the best teachers they ever came across were in such schools. This riddle-loaded musical composition was created by Shankar Jaikishan, lyrics were written by Hasrat Jaipuri, and it is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. An eternal classic!

The movie depicts how older India had a lot more to offer for all children, unlike the modern urbanized societies of today. This song has highly hummable beats and lyrics that easily stick to your toungue. The great voice of Mohammad Rafi makes it a real treat for everyone in the audience. Its music was composed by Dattaram and the lyrics written by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Rail Gaadi Rail Gaadi Chhuk Chhuk

Many consider this number to be Bollywood's first piece of rap music. The fact that the song is primarily for children does not undermine its spontaneous, innovative creativity. Not exactly in the classical mode, it befits the child entertainment where it proposes to belong. It also brings out the singing abilities of Ashok Kumar, a Bollywood veteran, who used to sing in his early years in Bollywood during the '30s and '40s. This number was and remains a favourite with children, though the appeal of child numbers is not the same today, an age of animated movies and video games. The music was composed by Vasant Desai and the lyrics were written by Harindranath Chattopadhyay.
