Story Summary

At Itan Private High School, Hitohito Tadano wants to live a quiet high school life, read the room and be an Average Joe. But when he meets Shōko Komi, the most popular girl in school, he’s startled by her. Everyone in the school idolizes her as the coolest girl. He discovers that she has social phobia and it makes it hard for her to communicate with others, when they become friends, she “tells” him she wants to make 100 friends and he decides to help her do that, despite being very average in a school where everyone there has a unique personal quirk.

The Story Is Unique and Interesting

I’d heard lots of good things about Komi Can’t Communicate, but I hadn’t gotten around to watching it until recently. I managed to binge-watch the anime in two days and I enjoyed it a lot.

I like the unique premise and the slice-of-life genre isn’t really my favorite genre but I was interested in the premise of Komi Can’t Communicate so I started watching the anime. I do like the premise of the popular girl having an issue that doesn’t seem like something she’d have, but the show does a great job portraying the social anxiety of the main character Komi.

The Animation Is Nice!

OLM Digital animated Komi Can’t Communicate and they did an excellent job. The animation is fluid and the art style is very nice. They also seem to have a decent anime budget and I don’t notice if they reuse a lot of animation in the episodes.

The colors of the anime are very vibrant and give the anime a nice atmosphere that I enjoyed looking at.

Overall, it looks great and it’s a visually pleasing anime and while it’s not action-oriented, it’s still very nice.

The Voice Cast Is Great!

Amber Lee Connors is great as Shōko Komi. She has a unique job as a voice actor because Komi doesn't have a lot of spoken dialogue in the anime. Instead, she makes a lot of cute noises and expresses herself with noises. She does have some spoken dialogue in the anime, but not a lot.

Kyle McCarley does a great job as Hitohito Tadano. I’ve always liked his voice acting and he’s a great voice actor. He’s been in a lot of great anime and I enjoyed his voice acting in the role of Tadano.

Skyler Davenport is great as Najimi Osana because Najimi keeps making their gender ambiguous, it’s a very interesting role to be in and Skyler Davenport did a great job in this role they made the character fun and entertaining.

Casey Mongillo is fun as Nene Onemine. I liked her character and she’s an interesting member of Komi’s circle of friends. I liked her character and I enjoyed her.

Cristina Vee does a great job as Ren Yamai and she had fun voicing this character in the anime. She really went Yandere, which is funny because she voiced Sakura Matou and the well-known prototype of a Yandere in Fate/Stay Night. She did a great job and I loved her voice work.

Cherami Leigh did a fantastic job as Omoharu Nakanaka. She’s a great voice actress and I’ve always enjoyed her voice work. She did a great job voicing this character and I enjoyed her in this role a lot.

The voice cast is great and I’ve enjoyed them a lot. I have also heard the Japanese voice cast and they’re great too. This is a great English voice cast that I enjoy a lot and if you like English dubs you’ll enjoy it too.

I Like the Soundtrack!

Yukari Hashimoto composed the music for Komi Can’t Communicate and I enjoyed the music a lot. It’s very pleasant music that suits the anime. It’s very pleasant music that can be cheerful, sad, or comedic when it needs to be. It’s also a very nice soundtrack that I enjoyed.

The opening is "Cinderella" by Cidergirl and I enjoy it a lot. It’s a very nice opening song and the visuals for the opening are very nice as well.

The ending is "Hikareinochi" by Kitri and I like it as well. It’s a very nice song that is very easy-going and heartwarming. It’s also a very pleasant song that I enjoy.

Overall, the soundtrack for Komi Can’t Communicate and I think that you’ll enjoy it too.

The Main Issue With Netflix's Subtitles

You can watch Komi Can’t Communicate in many languages with Netflix’s official subtitles, but there’s a glaring issue with the subtitles that fans have when it comes to the official Netflix subtitles.

The main issue is that Netflix doesn’t subtitle the dialogue boxes shown on the screen and the anime has a lot of them. I’ve also checked the subtitles and I noticed that they are subtitles for the English dub, and while the dub is fine, usually, the subtitles don’t match the dub dialogue script.

The main issue as mentioned before, is Netflix’s refusal to sub the dialogue boxes and I understand that there are a lot of them, but the main character, Shōko Komi communicates via text, so all the text on the chalkboard or on notebook paper is important, and Netflix won’t subtitle all of it.

This has led to fans making fansubs again, just to show all the written text, but if you’re on Netflix, you’ll miss all the text. I do believe that the characters will sometimes read the dialogue for you, but not all the time.

Watch This Anime if You Like Slice-Of-Life

I recommend you watch Komi Can’t Communicate if you like the slice-of-life genre and you want to watch an anime with a unique premise and fun characters. It might not be the most exciting anime you could watch, but it’s a fun anime that I enjoy a lot. I am currently watching the anime on Netflix as it airs because Netflix finally decided to simulcast the anime worldwide in Japanese with subtitles.

It’s a very fun anime that I enjoyed a lot. It’s not perfect, but it’s something that I enjoyed a lot and I felt it was worth my time to watch.

Quick Summary

My Rating: A-

Komi Can’t Communicate is a fun and heartwarming anime that everyone can enjoy. While not everyone can relate to all the characters, it’s still a nice anime to watch. It’s an enjoyable anime with unique characters and all the interesting shenanigans that high school students get into.

It’s also an entertaining comedy that is nice to look at, has a great voice cast in many languages, and has an excellent soundtrack.

Komi Can’t Communicate is worth your time and money if you want to stream it on Netflix, if you have a Netflix account, you’ll want to stream it and you’ll be able to watch the simulcast of the Japanese version of the anime.

I enjoyed the anime a lot and I think it’s very well made. The main issue with the subtitles is understandable for fans since the other companies that license anime usually make sure to subtitle the text on the screen, but Netflix didn’t subtitle all the text in the anime.

I understand why people would use fansubs for this anime, especially if you want to read the text shown on the screen.

I still highly recommend watching Komi Can’t Communicate to anyone that wants a fun slice-of-life anime that has quirky characters and unique characters and a fun premise.

This is a fun and enjoyable anime that I can reccommend to any fan looking for something interesting to watch.

Komi Can’t Communicate is not available on blu-ray yet, but I will update the review when it is.
