Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is a fantasy anime about rookie adventurer Bell Crenelle and his desire to become a full-fledged adventurer to impress the powerful adventurer Ais Wallenstein because he's in love with her.
His Familia, or guild is comprised of him and the goddess Hestia, and together they hope to expand their Familia and go on many adventures.
It’s a Fun Fantasy Story With Interesting Characters
Yes, Is it Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? does have a generic fantasy premise you can find in RPG videogames but it is an anime that I enjoyed when I was looking for something to watch on Netflix. I’d heard about it before and even have the mobile game Dan Matchi downloaded in BlueStacks but I didn’t watch a lot of the anime.
I saw that season 1 of Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? on Netflix and I decided to watch it. I have a HiDive subscription so I can continue watching because the later seasons haven’t been added on Netflix yet.
I like the story because fantasy is one of my favorite genres but I’m not really into the “Isekai” aspect of most of the Japanese light novels where someone from our world wakes up in another world. It’s been done so many times I don’t like the premise very much.
Fortunately, Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is not an “isekai”, it’s a fantasy story set in its world without any outsider from another world being brought into it.
I enjoyed the characters in the anime, Bell Crenelle, he’s a generic protagonist for sure, he’s got the “loser” stereotype, but the twist that the audience knows he has a special ability but he doesn’t know it makes the story interesting, but yes, he’s generic, but he’s interesting enough that I like watching his story.
The Goddess Hestia is a goddess that looks out for Bell and she’s funny and caring and tries to do her best to help her Familia. She’s a nice character and she’s fun to watch.
The other characters are interesting too, but I’m not going to cover them in the review. I’ll just say that I like the story and the characters.

The Animation Is Good
The animation is by J.C.Staff and I like the character designs and the animation used in the anime. The fight scenes look cool and the animation makes them exciting.
I like the art designs of the backgrounds used in the world and overall, the anime has a nice aesthetic that I like a lot. Overall, the anime is visually pleasing and it’s a fun anime to watch.

The English Dub Is Good
Sentai Filmworks’ English dubs have improved over the years and this anime has one of their better dubs.
Bryson Baugus did a great job as Bell Crenelle. I haven’t heard him in many anime but I enjoyed his voice work in this anime. He brought a lot of emotion and earnestness to his character.
Luci Christian is fantastic as Hestia. I love her voice acting and she does a fantastic job in this role. She brings personality to Hestia and she’s a lot of fun in the anime.
Shelley Calene-Black also did a good job as Ais Wallenstein. I liked her voice acting and she sounded like the “tough girl” personality that the character gave off.
Hilary Haag did a great as Liliruca Arde. I’ve always enjoyed her voice acting and I enjoyed her in this anime. She always gets pigeonholed as the cute character but it works for the anime.
David Wald gave a good performance as Welf Crozzo. He brought a cheerful disposition to his character while being a little serious at the same time. He did a good job in his role.
Overall, I enjoyed the English dub a lot and I do think it’s good. It’s an entertaining and enjoyable dub but it’s not going to blow listeners away.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Opening | Hey World
The Music Is Good
Keiji Inai’s soundtrack is good, I enjoyed the music in this anime and it had a nice fantasy feel to it. I like the music in the anime.
The opening is "Hey World" by Yuka Iguchi. I liked the opening, it sets the adventurous tone for the anime and it’s a fun opening song. It’s a fun opening and I enjoyed it.
The ending song is "RIGHT LIGHT RISE" by Kanon Wakeshima. It’s also a fun ending song that I enjoyed a lot.
Overall, the soundtrack is suitable for the anime and gives the anime an adventurous atmosphere that puts you in a good mood and keeps up the emotional tension and excitement.
The Anime Is Slow Paced
Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? does take its time to get going with the story. It’s not too fast-paced and it does take time to get the story going because it takes time for the party members of the Hestia Familia time to join Bell Crenelle and Hestia.
The slow pace of the anime does make it less exciting to watch, but it does pick up towards the end of the first season, but it feels very slow at the beginning.
The Anime Has Many Generic Anime Tropes
Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has many anime tropes, such as the outcast loser for the main character, and that he secretly has a special power that makes him unique and secretly powerful.
It also has the typical stoic girl that the main character is drawn to, the trickster support, the stoic blacksmith.
It also has a busty friend that has a secret crush on the main character.
You’ll see a ton of generic anime tropes and that might annoy some viewers. The anime is still fun but it’s full of tropes you’ve seen everywhere in anime.
Parental Content Warning
Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? does have some fanservice and some nudity, so keep that in mind. There’s also some violence in the anime but it mainly resembles a videogame. It is recommended for ages 17 and up.
The Anime Is Fun but Has Clichés
Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is a fun anime, but it has many clichés you see in anime and if you’re familiar with anime tropes you’ll recognize them.
Even though I enjoyed the anime, some clichés can make it feel like other fantasy anime you’ve seen before. If you don’t mind clichés you’ll have fun with the anime because of the story and the visuals.
If you just want something fun that you can watch without thinking it too much you should watch Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? I enjoyed the anime and it is a fun fantasy anime despite being full of clichés.

My Grade: B-
Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is a fun anime series with a lot of generic tropes, but the characters and their adventures make up for it. I do enjoy the anime but it’s not a must-buy anime. I enjoyed watching it on Netflix and I’ll be watching the rest of the seasons on HiDive because I’m subscribed there.
I do recommend Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? if you enjoy fantasy anime and like certain aspects of gaming, but it can be very cliché if you’ve seen a lot of Isekai anime because it does have many of those tropes without a person being brought from another world.
It does feel like a generic fantasy but I had fun and enjoyed Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? a lot.
If you want to watch it, I would recommend watching it on Crunchyroll or HiDive. It does feel like a generic fantasy, but it’s entertaining. I feel it was worth my time but I won’t buy it for my anime collection.
