Story Summary

In an unnamed city in Japan, at Shinyo Academy, there’s a rumor talked about by the female students, telling the story of a Shinigami, or Reaper, called Boogiepop that kills girls when they’re at their most beautiful. There’s also a strange string of events connected to each other by Boogiepop, and a number of students try to investigate what’s going on and why all this is happening.

The Story Is An Intricate Mystery

I have reviewed the first light novel in this series, and although this anime adapts the entire series, I enjoyed the first light novel, Boogiepop and Others, for which this anime is named, a lot.

The anime is an interesting one that sets up an intriguing mystery. One that’s not easy to figure out, and that’s what makes it fun. I liked the story and the interesting mystery with a science fiction twist that makes it stand out in the mystery genre.

I also like the added twist of a supernatural urban legend that the character of Boogiepop that is woven throughout the story, while Boogiepop himself is not seen too often, he is a constant throughout all the story arcs in the anime and light novels.

The interesting fusion of science fiction and mystery make this anime unique and stand out from just being one genre or the other.

The Animation Looks Great!

Studio Madhouse did the animation for this adaptation of Boogiepop and Others (2019). Studio Madhouse has a mostly good reputation for animating adaptations, although there are some really bad adaptations they’ve done like Chaos;HEAd (2008), most of their adaptations are at least good to outstanding, like Trigun (1998) and the OVAs for Hellsing Ultimate (2006).

While Boogiepop and Others (2019) is not an action-heavy story, the art style and character designs are nice to look at, and I liked the backgrounds for scenes.

The fight scenes aren’t as flashy as some anime adaptations, but the fight scenes that are in the anime are very exciting and nice to look at.

Overall, the animation is not the most amazing thing you’ll ever see, but it is very well done.

The English Dub Is Great

I really like the English dub for Boogiepop and Others (2019); it’s an excellent English dub. It’s one of Funimation’s better English dubs, and it’s been a long time since Funimation had a dub that actually stood out because they dub so many anime.

Michelle Rojas did an excellent job as Boogiepop/Touka Miyashita. I like the voice actress’s work; she did a good job separating the two characters she plays, Touka and Boogiepop.

I really enjoyed Morgan Garrett as Nagi Kirima. Her character was interesting, and her voice acting kept me engaged since Nagi appears throughout the anime. She did an excellent job in her performance.

The rest of the cast is good, but these are the voice actors that stood out to me. This is an anime with an excellent English dub, and it’s one that stood out to me as being very well done—it's one of Funimation's better English dubs.

The Soundtrack Is Good

Kensuke Ushio’s music is nice, but it’s not the most amazing music I’ve ever heard for an anime soundtrack. I still enjoyed the music a lot. Hajime Hyakkoku composed the soundtrack for the last three episodes, and it was good too.

What’s really outstanding about Boogiepop and Others (2019) is the opening song, "shadowgraph" by MYTH&ROID, which I really enjoyed.

The ending is "Whiteout" by Riko Azuna, and it’s a nice song too.

The soundtrack is good, but not amazing. The opening is a memorable one that fans enjoyed a lot.

The Anime Pacing Is Slow

Boogiepop and Others (2019) is an interesting story, but it’s not a fast-paced story. The slow pacing of the arcs make it a little harder to get into because the story won’t spoon feed you information, but it isn’t a fast-paced action anime. The mystery is the main draw of the story, and the pacing is much slower because of the genre.

Some viewers might feel it’s too slow; you should at least try the first arc to see if you want to keep watching the anime.

Reader Poll:

The Ending Might Not Please Everyone

The ending might be controversial because some viewers might not see it as satisfactory. I thought it was a good ending, but it wasn’t amazing or anything.

I do think they wrapped everything up as best they could while still leaving an opportunity for them to make a sequel if they want to. It’s a good ending, and I did like it, but I didn’t love it.

It’s a Great Anime Series That Won’t Appeal To Everyone

This is not an anime series that will appeal to the “mainstream” anime crowd. This is more of a niche in the science fiction/mystery audience; this is basically a sleeper hit that only people that are interested in the story’s premise will sit down and watch.

Anime fans only give this anime low scores because either they didn’t like how the story was adapted or there weren’t enough “action scenes” for them. This is not an action anime, this is a mystery anime, and it’s a good mystery.

Boogiepop and Others (2019) is an anime that I enjoyed a lot. It may not be the best anime I’ve ever seen, but it is a lot of fun.

My Grade: A

I really enjoyed Boogiepop and Others (2019); it’s a unique mystery anime with an interesting sci-fi twist that I really enjoyed. It’s not a perfect anime, but it is an excellent mystery. It may not have a payoff that satisfies all the viewers but I think it’s a great anime.

I enjoyed the storytelling and the mystery and the science fiction twist in the story. It’s a very well done anime with excellent writing, production values, an excellent English dub, and a good soundtrack.

For me, it’s one I’ll be buying for my collection, I’ll be getting it used because I’m cheap, but it’s not a story that everyone will like, but if you enjoyed it, you should definitely buy it for your collection.

I recommend giving it a try on Crunchyroll in Japanese in English subs because it’s free and you have to pay to access the English dubs. You should at least try the first arc because it’s a little slow when it comes to getting started.

I would recommend the light novels more because they have more references that didn’t make it into the anime.

While I love this anime a lot, I know not everyone will, so give it a try, but if you drop it because you can’t get into it, don’t feel bad, this is not an anime that everyone will enjoy. I did enjoy it, and it’s one of my favorite anime from this year.

It’s worth your time and money if you’re willing to put your time into it. This is not an anime that spoonfeeds you every little thing, and you have to become invested in it to get the most enjoyment out of it. Give it a try, but if you prefer reading, the light novels are licensed by Seven Seas in the U.S.

It’s worth your time if you’re willing to give it a chance. It might be worth your money if you really love it.

The chronological sequel Boogiepop Phantom is available from Nozomi Entertainment and is streaming on YouTube.
