Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, Goemon Ishikawa XIII, and Fujiko Mine infiltrate the luxury liner Machine Gun Kelly and attempt to steal money from the ship’s casinos, but Lupin III is actually after a different prize, information about the sunken ship Yankee Slade. What’s Lupin III really after and will he get it or will the San Francisco mob get to it first?
This Is a 90s Action Flick With “Lupin the 3rd”
This movie is a big shout-out to 1990s action flicks. It’s also got all the over-the-top shenanigans of the Lupin the 3rd franchise that I love. It’s an interesting and exciting adventure caper that takes place in San Francisco, CA, and is a great setting for an action flick.
The story is entertaining and if you just want an action anime movie, this is a good one to watch. The story is fun, not too complicated but it has many of the tropes used in the Lupin the 3rd franchise.
Lupin III - Alcatraz Connection
The Animation Is Excellent
The animation for Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection is excellent, it’s not the most amazing animation in the franchise but it is very nice to look at and it’s very fluid.
Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection marks the first time Lupin the 3rdwas animated digitally and not with cell animation. The movie is old but it has aged well for how it looks, especially since it was animated by Hiroyuki Imaishi, one of the animators that went on to work with Studio Trigger, the animation looks really good, the good parts are usually in the action set pieces for the anime movie.
The animation is very good, but it wasn’t the most amazing entry in the franchise animation-wise, but it’s fun to watch.
It’s still visually entertaining and a lot of fun to watch. If you want a visually entertaining anime action movie to watch you’ll enjoy Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection.
The Japanese Dub Is Great!
Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection did not have an English dub when it was licensed by Discotek. It does have the Japanese dub so I’ll be reviewing the Japanese dub.
Kanichi Kurita did a great job voicing Lupin III. He’s fun and brings a lot of playfulness to the character. He took over the role after Yasuo Yamada died in 1995.
He’s a great seiyuu and I’ve enjoyed him in the role of Lupin III. He brings a lot of personality to the character and I enjoy how energetic he makes Lupin.
Kiyoshi Kobayashi did an excellent job voicing Daisuke Jigen. He’s a great Seiyu and he is great in this role. I enjoyed his voice acting in the movie. He brings a fun personality to Jigen while being the most level-headed of the group.
He’s an excellent voice actor for Jigen and you can see why he voiced the character for so long until he retired from the role in 2021, he did a great job and it shows.
Goemon Ishikawa XIII
Makio Inoue voiced Goemon Ishikawa XIII and he also does a great job. His character doesn’t speak too much but he’s always an interesting part of Lupin’s gang.
While he doesn’t have the biggest part to play in this movie, Makio Inoue still gave an excellent vocal performance as Goemon Ishikawa XIII.
Eiko Masuyama did a great job voicing Fujiko Mine. I enjoy her voice acting in this anime movie. She gives a lot of characterization to Fujiko as both mischievous and manipulative.
She’s an interesting character and Eiko Masuyama gave a great voice performance for Fujiko’s character.
Inspector Koichi Zenigata
Gorō Naya did a great job voicing Inspector Koichi Zenigata, and he brings both the comedic and the serious aspects to the character. I enjoy Gorō Naya’s voice acting for Zenigata and he was great in this movie.
I love the dynamic that Zenigata has with Lupin III in this movie and Gorō Naya voiced the character very well and I enjoyed his performance.
Tarō Ishida voiced Terry Crown, he was an interesting character and I liked his performance. Terry’s character is a foil to Zenigata and Lupin III and he is entertaining to watch in this movie.
Tarō Ishida’s voice acting was good too. He did a great job in this role and kept me entertained.
The Japanese voice acting was great and the voice cast was very entertaining. Because there’s no English dub for this anime movie some English dub fans might want to skip the movie but the voice cast is fantastic and you should watch it even if you’re primarily an English dub fan.
Lupin The Third feat. akiko
The Soundtrack Is Great!
Yuji Ohno’s soundtrack is great too. The music is excellent and fits the tone of the movie. It’s fun and exciting and emotional when it needs to be, it mainly keeps up the intensity of the action scenes.
The movie also has another excellent rendition of the “Lupin the 3rd” theme that Yuji Ohno used for Lupin the 3rd Part II (1977).
I enjoyed the soundtrack for Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection a lot and it made the movie entertaining.
The Movie Does Have Common Tropes Used in “Lupin the 3rd”
This movie does use several common tropes that usually happen to Lupin the 3rd and his gang and they are recognizable if you’ve consumed a lot of Lupin the 3rd media.
The tropes of certain plot points are obvious to longtime fans but newcomers will enjoy it.
“Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection” Is a Fun Action-Packed Caper
Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection is an action-packed anime movie that is a tribute to 1990s action flicks and I enjoyed it a lot. The animation is great, the story is fun, and it’s just a nice way to get a quick dose of Lupin the 3rd when you want an anime movie to watch.
It’s a fun and entertaining movie that is exciting and action-packed. It’s a fun romp that has a lot of fun with the American action movie genre while having all the over-the-top animation of Japanese anime.
It is worth your time, but is it worth your money? Maybe. If you love Lupin the 3rd and you have to collect everything you’ll want to buy it. But if you just want to watch the movie you can just watch it on RetroCrush.TV if you live in the U.S. or Canada or rent it digitally if it is available.
