'Ambitions': What to Expect When the Series Returns

Margaret Minnicks has been an online writer for many years. She writes about various things, including celebrities and entertainment.

When Ambitions returns on OWN on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, it will not be Season 2. Instead, it will be the second half of Season 1 that premiered on June 18, 2019, and ended on August 27, 2019, at the completion of 11 episodes. The second half will end in December after seven more episodes. The entire first season will then have had a total of 18 episodes.

The first half followed Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots which gave Ambitions a boost. The ratings for Ambitions were rather solid when it was following The Haves and the Have Nots. Then it had 820,000 viewers. The numbers decreased significantly without the lead-in series during the finale with only 790,000 viewers.

Hopefully, ratings for the second half of Season 1 will increase even though The Haves and the Have Nots will not return until January 7, 2020. By then, Ambitions will have ended. However, the rest of Season 1 is at the mercy to viewers to keep the series alive. If not, the OWN series stands a good chance of being canceled. Hopefully, viewers won't let that happen.

Title of the Series

Ambitions is an appropriate name for the series because most of the main characters are striving for much more than they already have. Some of them don't care how they get it as long as the get it.

  • The two high-powered female attorneys want more cases so they can be more popular and outdo the other.
  • The mayor is fighting to satisfy his sexual pleasure while dealing with politics.
  • The owner of Thelma's Place is fighting to keep her restaurant in the community.
  • A fashion designer maneuvers her way into getting a business deal.

Most of the characters have "ambitions" to get more and to do more.

What the Series Is About

The OWN series centers around two former best friends from Spelman College who are now enemies. Stephanie Lancaster, played by Robin Givens, and Amara Hughes, placed by Essence Atkins, are now high-powered attorneys who are feuding with each other in their personal lives and in their professional careers. They both are beautiful and smart attorneys who have a lot going for them.

Stephanie is the wife of Atlanta Mayor, Evan Lancaster, played by Brian J. White who cheats on her. Amara is Assistant United States Attorney, who recently relocated to Atlanta where all the drama is taking place. Amara and her husband Titus Hughes, played by Kendrick Cross, moved to Atlanta for a fresh start. However, they are not getting the fresh start they anticipated.

The two former friends don't hold back when it comes to deliberately hurting the other when it comes to love, sex, power, careers, and politics. It is hard to believe they were once best friends considering the way they treat each other.

The Cast

The OWN primetime soap opera from Jamey Giddens and Will Packer has some veteran actors in the cast. Therefore, it is hard to believe the ratings never increased. The cast includes some well-known actors who performed extremely well. They include Robin Givens, Essence Atkins, Brian Bosworth, Deena Dill, Gino Anthony Pesi, Kayla Smith, Kendrick Cross, Brely Evans, Brian White, Matt Cedeño, and Erica Page.

No matter how good the actors are, three of them were killed off in the first half of Season 1. At this rate, there will be very few left by the time the entire first season ends.

So, who were the three killed off in the first part of the first season?

Three Deaths

It is unusual to have three deaths occurring at the beginning of a new series. The deaths will affect how the rest of the season goes. Of course, nothing is usual when it comes to the stories on Ambitions.

All deaths are tragic, but it was an unexpected tragic for Evan Lancaster Sr., played by Tony Vaughn. He was gunned down when he was on his way to propose to Luelene, played by Sherry Richards. He was dressed up with a ring in his pocket. He had called her and told her he was on his way. Just steps away from getting into his car, he was killed at close range by an unidentified assailant.

In a preview about the return of the series, Rondell Lancaster, played by Brely Evans, accused her sister-in-law Stephanie of having something to do with her father's murder.

Evan and Rondell's father was not the only fatality in the mid-season finale. Another death was that of Herschel Cooper, the clerk who accepted bribes from Greg Peters. Herschel took his own life by shooting himself in the head after Amara threatened him.

The third death was Daphne, the mayor's mistress, played by Brianne Cordaro. Evan discovered her body waiting for him in bed.

Sex, Cheating, and Lies

Stephanie was caught in Amara's husband's hotel room. When Amara went to the hotel to talk to Titus, Stephanie is the one who opened the door wearing a bathrobe. Titus is in the background in his birthday suit. Stephanie will stop at nothing to get what she wants no matter who she has to hurt to get it.

Other than three deaths during the finale, there was a kidnapping as well. Bella Tru, played by Erica Page, gave into temptation with Ignacio after settling on a new business partnership with her fashions. However, the encounter to distract her so someone could come into the apartment and kidnap Joaquin, her young son whose father is Mayor Evan Lancaster. All of the tragedies will have an effect on the mayor.

Initially, there was some friction between Stephanie and her daughter Carly, played by Kayla Smith, when Stephanie found out her daughter was in a relationship with Lori.played by Christina Kirkman. It wasn't so much that Carly is a lesbian, but Stephanie and her father resent that she is dating a Purifoy.

Expect a Lot

Needless to say, a lot went on in the finale. Therefore, expect a lot to be in the premiere of the second part of the season.

If you have been keeping up with the reading, here are the cliffhangers that will be addressed when Ambitions returns.

  1. The murder of Evan Lancaster Sr. and how Luelene and the family will deal with it
  2. Herschel Cooper's suicide
  3. The body of Daphne in the mayor's bed
  4. The kidnapping of Joaquin
  5. Amara's reaction to finding Stephanie in her husband's hotel room
  6. Carly and Lori's relationship

Tune in on Tuesday, November 12 on OWN to see how the above cases will be addressed and to help the ratings go up for Ambitions.
