A First Look at Nogizaka46
What is Nogizaka46 and Who Created the Group?
A few days ago, I wrote about 26 year-old Misa Eto announcing her plans to graduate from girl group Nogizaka46. But what is Nogizaka46 and what are its plans for Japan’s entertainment industry at large? Nogizaka46 is another one of those female idol groups in Japan and the mastermind and influence behind its creation is the brilliant Yasushi Akimoto who also is the producer of AKB48. Nogizaka46 is considered to be the first official “rival group” to AKB48.
How Did Nogizaka46 Begin Their Activities?
What Are the Origins of the group Nogizaka46?
The roots of Nogizaka46 date back to June 2011 and there is a difference compared to AKB48 in the sense that unlike groups such as SKE48 and NMB48 which are “sister musical groups” Nogizaka46 is in a sort of competition with AKB48 and the name carries with it the meaning that “even with fewer members than AKB48 we won’t lose,” (AKB48 Wiki). For the first generation the final auditions were held in August 2011 as 56 girls competed for 36 available spots. However, a staggering 38,934 people applied to join and on August 22nd of that year, the 36 people were announced. In another announcement that was considered a surprise, 16 more girls would join the group as provisional Senbatsu members.
Nogizaka46 and Music Festivals
It would be on June 25, 2012 that Nogizaka46 would take part in a festival called Yubi Matsuri which is an idol festival that was produced by the very famous Rino Sashihara! This concert was held at the famous Nippon Budokan before a crowd of 8,000 people. The concert saw the appearance of various girl groups such as Tokyo Girls’ Style, Momoiro Clover Z, and Super Girls.

Interesting Facts About Nogizaka46
One interesting thing to point out about Nogizaka46 is that their second single called Oide Shampoo released in April 2012 got attention because of focus on sexually suggestive dance moves by the girls. During a part of the video, the girls are seen lifting their skirts over their faces. It is rather unusual to see this sort of thing from these girls given the fact that they were of middle school age.
Nogizaka46 Will Release a 4th Album
It has been announced that Nogizaka46 will release their 4th studio album on April 17, 2019 but the album does not have a title yet. This announcement was made on the second night of their 7th anniversary event called 7th Year Birthday LIVE. It was held at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka. It has been almost 2 years since Nogizaka46 released their last album called "Umaretekara Hajimete Mita Yume". This 7th year LIVE event was held from February 21st through the 24th. Erika Ikuta who could not take part on the first night because of scheduling issues started things off with quite a performance with the song called Nandome no Aozora ka?” Former member Nanase Nishino who graduated from the group last year made a surprise guest appearance and performed the song called "Mou Sukoshi no Yume."
A Former Member of Nogizaka46 Starts an Account on Instagram
In an interesting turn of events, one of the former members of Nogizaka46 has done something that will make her more active on social media. Former member of Nogizaka46 Yuri Saito has started an account on Instagram. Her work with Nogizaka46 ended on June 30, 2019 and she has been promoting her first photo book called 7-byou no Shiawase.

Rachael: thanks so much for commenting! It is awesome to know that someone found this article interesting. I did not know that much about this group before I began to write about them. I really want the world to become aware of artists such as Nogizaka46 instead of always listening to more famous artists. I also wrote about Nogizaka46 because I knew that this sort of an article would provide value. What is lolicon in anime? Can you please explain this? Thanks so much for your feedback!
Naomi Starlight from Illinois on February 26, 2019:
Interesting article! I wrote a short non-fiction book about lolicon in anime. It's only about 20,000 words. I'm trying to expand it and, I think adding a part about the romanticizing and sexualizing of little girls in J-Pop might be an important thing to talk about in the book too.
Also, I noticed that table. It's not a big deal but in a Table capsule you can click on a column and click on "delete column" and then click "update" to get rid of columns you're not going to use in your table. There is an option to delete and add rows and columns and options for selecting whether the text is aligned to the right, left, or center. But you have to click "update" for the changes to go through.
Just thought you should know. This is an interesting article! Definitely following.
