It was a terrible accident on the movie set of the western movie Rust at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, south of Santa Fe in New Mexico where veteran actor Alec Baldwin used a prop gun and accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded the film's director Joel Souza. Baldwin is heartbroken over the incident that happened on Thursday, October 21, 2021.

Baldwin was handed what he thought was a safe prop because the person who handed it to him called out, "cold gun." However, the prop gun which was thought to be safe contained live rounds, according to the police investigation

Hutchins, 42, was shot in the chest. She died after being airlifted from the movie set to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. Souza, 48, was also taken to the hospital, treated, and released.

Production was shut down immediately. Plans are up in the air about the future of the movie. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing in its preliminary stages. Baldwin voluntarily gave a statement and is cooperating fully with authorities. He, along with others, wants to know how the accident happened.

The Los Angeles Times and Deadline Hollywood reported that several crew members, and about seven camera operators, and other workers walked off the set hours before the tragedy because of unsafe conditions, including not following COVID-19 guidelines and poor gun safety. It was also reported that during a previous rehearsal, the prop gun misfired.

Actor and Producer Alec Baldwin

Baldwin is one of the producers of the film which is set in 1880s Kansas. The actor plays the outlaw grandfather of a 13-year-old boy convicted of an accidental killing.

The 63-year-old veteran actor is no stranger to using prop guns. He has used them in eleven of his more than 100 television movies and films.

After the accident on Thursday, Baldwin was pictured outside the set crying. On Friday, he said there was no way to convey his shock and sadness. Fans of Baldwin are wondering how he will ever get over the accident. Gayle King said on CBS News that this is something he will live with for the rest of his life.

Alec's entire family is supporting him. He has three brothers who are also actors, and it could have happened with any one of them. Actor Stephen Baldwin, father of Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber's wife, wants people to keep his brother and those on the Rust set in their prayers.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins

Colleagues, family, friends, and fans are saddened and are paying tributes to cinematographer Halyna Hutchins who was in the prime of her life and career. She was a wife and mother of a nine-year-old son. Baldwin reached out to her family after the tragedy.

Halyna was credited with her superb work on more than 30 films and television miniseries, Her colleagues praised her for outstanding talent and commitment. In 2019, she was selected as one of American Cinematographers’ Rising Stars.

Halyna's last social media post was two days before her death. It is a video of her riding a horse. Her post said, "One of the perks of shooting a western is you get to ride horses on your day off."

Not the First Prop Gun Killing

This is not the first time someone was killed by a prop gun on a movie set. On March 31, 1993, Brandon Lee, son of martial arts icon Bruce Lee, was killed at the age of 28 in the same way as Hutchins did while filming his breakthrough role in The Crow.

Brandon was an actor, fight choreographer, and martial artist like his father. Because there were only eight days left to complete the film, Brandon's fiancée Eliza Hutton and his mother supported director Proyas' decision to complete shooting the film where Brandon had only three more days to perform. Stunt doubles Chad Stahelski and Jeff Cadiente and special effects were used. The Crow was released in 1994.

These prop gun incidents have been few and far between, but officials say accidents like this should never happen at all. There is a heated debate about whether certain types of prop guns should be banned, especially since visual effects are possible to get the same results.

The death of Hutchins brought back memories to the family of Brandon Lee. His sister Shannon tweeted, "Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on Rust. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period."

Personal Note From This Writer

My heart goes out to Alec Baldwin, the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, director Joel Souza, and all those working on the film, Rust. Hopefully, they will get spiritual counseling so they will eventually have peace.

I wonder why they don't use fake guns that are made to look like real guns. Some movies are already using graphics during the editing process to add the burst of fire the erupts from the barrel when the guns are fired. This would be so much safer.

This was a heartbreaking accident for all concerned, but will be difficult for Alec Baldwin to live with going forward. The use of prop guns obviously needs to see much stricter standards introduced.
