Chocolate Hero

From the very beginning, I would like to say that actor Devanand had a great personality. Yet Devanand seems more intimate as a favorite artist; and so their singular mention brings them closer and enhances intimacy. He is therefore singularly mentioned in this article. Everyone has a deep respect for him. Devanand's father was a lawyer by profession. Devanand was born in 1923 in Punjab. But Devanand left home and reached Mumbai because he was influenced by actor Ashok Kumar.

When he first came to Mumbai, he arranged to stay and then he started his acting career. After that Devanand was also helped by luck and Devanand got a job in Prabhat Film Company of Pune. In Pune, Devananda met Guru Dutt. During the struggle of his life, Devanand used to stay at 'Lucky Restaurant' in Deccan, Pune.

P. L. Santoshi chose Devanand for the movie "Hum Ek Hain" and the doors of the film world were opened for him. 'Jiddi' with Kamini Kaushal was his first hit movie. This movie made his name as an actor in every household. Taking advantage of the success of the film 'Jiddi', Devanand did not get a job, but implemented a contract with the producers. Meanwhile, he met actress Suraiya and they fell in love with each other.

Suraiya's grandmother was strongly opposed to their love affair. Her grandmother broke up with them, citing religious differences. However, Suraiya remained unmarried for the rest of her life. Devananda also engaged himself in soothing work. Gurudatta, a friend of Devanand's during the struggle, was given the opportunity to direct and Devanand started the movie 'Baazi'.

The movie 'Baaji' became a hit. Due to the movie, Mona Sinha i.e. Kalpana Karthik became close to Devanand and they got married.

After that, Devanand's movie "Andhiyan" was selected for the "Karlovy Vary Festival". Due to the success of movies like Munimji, CID, Nau Do Gyara , Paying Guest, Kalapani, Kala Bazar, Hum Dono, etc., Devanand's popularity as the favorite hero of all began to grow. His haircut, gait, and eloquence were enough to drive moviegoers crazy.

Filmy Career

Meanwhile, the story of R. K. Narayan's novel 'The Guide' was rushed and Devanand decided to make a movie in both Hindi and English language. Vijay Anand was in charge of directing while famous music composer S. D. Burman was in charge of music. The movie 'Guide' became a super hit during that time; But there was a superstition that it would not rain wherever Guide's cinema was located.

However, Devanand's experiment did not go down well with the audience; However, the movie 'Johnny Mera Naam' was a resounding success. In Jamshedpur, the administration had to fire on the crowd to watch 'Johnny Mera Naam', which was of special importance. During the filming of the song in the movie, some fans even decided to close the current ropeway so that only Devanand could be seen.

Devanand's movie 'Hare Ram Hare Krishna' also gained popularity among a large audience. While his contemporaries Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar were turning to character roles, Devanand's protagonists were Gambler, Sharif Badmash, Ishq Ishq Ishq, Amir Garib, Warrant, Des Pardes, Manpasand, Lootmar, Swamidada. This movie did not get much publicity but it did not lose its enthusiasm.

One of the things Devanand had to say was that he was particularly insistent on looking young. Neetu Singh was cast in his 'Ishq Ishq Ishq'. But Nitusingh only called Devanand "thank you 'Uncle", so Devanand withdrew from the role. As time went on, Devanand's son Sunil was introduced to the people through the movies 'Anand Aur Anand' and 'Main Tere Liye', but failed again; But who will stop Devananda?

Devanand made many movies like Naujawan, Sachey Ka Bolbala, Lashkar, Awwal Number, Sau Crore, Main Solah Baras Ki, Love at Time Square, Censor, Chargesheet; But these movies did not go down well with the fans.

The names of most of these movies will not even be remembered by the spectators. Why does this guy make movies? Such a question was asked to the good people at that time. Devanand was the pillar of early days of many artists like Tina Munim, Zarina Wahab, Jackie Shroff, Tabu, Aamir Khan, Sonam etc. The wild, Tisri Manjil, Zanjeer, which reached its peak of popularity, is a movie of Devanand share, but he did not do it. In addition to many awards for his successful career, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. A postage stamp was issued in his memory.

Proudly saying that Devanand has a special affection for Pune. He did not forget to mention that he was admitted to Sassoon for three days under the care of Dr. Shriram Lagoo in the accident that took place after the film "Jaal". Devananda, who believes that life is over when the struggle is over, says, "Life is to move forward without celebrating successes and without mourning the failures." According to his definition, Devananda lived to the end.
