Completely on their own in the strange land, they need to find ways to survive or rather die.
5. Saiunkoku Monogatari (The Story of Saiunkoku)
This anime shares the same time period with Fushigi Yugi, even the character design is also quite similar. Saiunkoku is home to eight houses named after different colors. The story is about a noblewoman Shurei Hong who is currently facing very hard times. Her father works as a librarian, a respectful post but pays little compensation. Shurei works as a teacher, though her dream is to win a post in government, a career prohibited to women.
Ryuuki Shi is a new emperor, who has no enthusiasm for important matters and loves to flirt with men. To ensure Ryuuki becomes a responsible ruler, his grand advisor appoints Shurei for six months as the emperor’s consort. She readily accepts the proposal as she is promised to receive 500 gold coins in case she succeeds. The anime shows the hardships of a woman and how she struggles to bring change.
4. Ayashi no Ceres (Ceres, Celestial Legend)
Ayashi no Ceres is a reverse harem anime just like Fushigi Yugi. Ceres was a Celestial maiden who came to earth to bathe in a stream. She hung her robe on a nearby tree, which was the key to going back to heaven. Unfortunately, it is stolen by a man who forces her to become his wife. Together, they build a family of humans mixed with Tennyo-blood (Celestial maiden blood).
In the present day, Aya Mikage is a descendent of the same lineage. It’s her 16th birthday and she, along with her twin brother Aki, is forced to visit her grandfather’s home. The visit is made to know if she has a Tennyo blood or not. She, later, realizes that she is the reincarnation of Ceres who occasionally controls her mind and body under dire circumstances. When she transforms, she gains the supernatural ability of teleportation, premonition, and extremely fast speed. She can also create shields and produce energy blasts from her hands. According to a prediction, it is said Ceres will become the cause of the destruction of the entire Mikage family to take revenge for stealing her celestial robe.
3. Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time)
Watching this anime feels like watching Fushigi Yugi all over again. Harukanaru is about a high school girl Akane. On the first day of her school, she along with her friends Tenma and Shimon are pulled into a mysterious old well by a demon. When they gain consciousness, they realize they’re in Kyo, a world that is quite similar to Kyoto during the Heian Period. The people of Kyo believe Akane to be the priestess who can save them from demons. Akane receives help from eight handsome and single men, called Hachiyou, who would anything to save their priestess of the Dragon God. Though she is baffled by the transition, she tries to understand the world of Kyo and gradually gains the confidence to fulfill her duties. Both the anime are similar in almost every manner except in the number of episodes.
2. Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn)
Just like Fushigi Yugi, Akatsuki no Yona is also a historical anime filled with the perfect ratio of romance, magic, comedy, and really strong character arcs. Also, the female leads of both the anime share similar personalities. The story follows the life of a sole princess of Kouka named Yona. She lives a luxurious life, unaware of the harsh realities that exist beyond the walls of her Crimson Dragon Castle. She has a crush of 10 years named Su-Won, the son of King’s brother, Yu-Hon. On her 16th birthday, Yona expresses her desire to marry Su-Won which is straight away discarded by her father (the king).
Determined to make Su-Won her husband, Yona visits her father at night to persuade him to change his decision. To her shock, she watches Su-Won driving a sword through his father’s chest. Su-Won reveals his plan to overthrow the current ruler and desire to becomes the next king. Yona runs away with her bodyguard Hak to Fuuga. She meets an exiled priest who reveals her about the 2000 years old history of the Crimson Dragon King. Learning the heroic history, Yona begins the journey to save her country.
Both the anime share similar mythology and legends occasionally. They feature modern girls who are transported to the alternative worlds and need to move out of their comfort zones to ensure their survival. InuYasha is about a 15-year-old girl named Kagome Higurashi, who is dragged into a cursed well by a demon. Instead of dying, she moves 500 years back into the past.
It’s a Sengoku period when the demon’s target was a wish-granting jewel known as the Shikon Jewel, which is reborn within Kagome’s. Unfortunately, the battle with the demon causes the jewel to shatter in multiple pieces. Kagome takes the help of a hybrid human, InuYasha to prevent the jewel from falling in the wrong hands. They are also joined by a fox-demon Shippo, demon slayer Sango, and an intelligent monk Miroku. While each of them has its own differences and unique personalities, they work together to focus on what’s more important.
Each of the anime features a young girl who willingly or unwillingly transports to a different world and meets with life-long friends and cruel enemies. Despite the similar storyline, each of them is a widely acclaimed series. So, if you ever strive to watch something more like Fushigi Yugi, then you have your answer.
