PS has been watching anime as long as she's living. For her, it's a perfect getaway to cherish the world where everything's possible.
“The Legend of Korra” is a sequel to the highly acclaimed series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. Set 70 years after “Avatar”, the anime is about a 17-year-old girl, Korra, the new avatar. She hails from Southern Water Tribe. She is exceptionally powerful water, fire, and earth bender, except air.
To master air technique and become a full-fledged avatar, Korra decides to live under the protection of Tenzin, previous avatar Aang’s son. For this, she travels from her town to Republic City. As it is said, nothing comes easy for the hero, Korra learns about the crimes developing in the city and is expected to resolve it in the shortest time possible.
Fortunately, she meets various other characters who are ready to assist her in the human as well as the spirit worlds. As the story progresses, you not only witness Korra’s journey of becoming a powerful avatar but also discover the relationships emerging amid the chaos.
It's the relationships that make the anime worth remembering. Some relationships survive for a while and some leave a long-lasting impact on our mind, maybe because they resemble a lot to our life circumstances. The Legend of Korra is filled with many such relationships. Among them, here are my five favorite and most memorable relationships:
5. Lin, Suyin, and Toph
Shown as a young earth bender in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toph still stands strong despite her old age in The Legend of Korra. Even at this stage, there’s no more who can give her a run for her money, not even the avatar herself. However, her prowess seems to be limited only to the battlefield. She considers herself to be lucky to be a mother of two daughters Lin and Suyin, but also admits her failure as a mother.
As a chief police officer, she once helped her younger daughter Suyin to escape from arrest. Known for her honesty and strictness, Toph couldn’t maintain the same self-dignity afterward and decided to leave her post. She also blamed her lack of affection for the daughters in the early years due to which their relationships shattered to pieces.
However, Toph never left her daughters’ sight, even when living in the swamp, she maintains a continuous watch on them and their well-being. She isn’t good at displaying her emotions but deeply cares for her family such that when they are caught in inescapable trouble, she rushes to save them. In the end, she confesses her inabilities and bonds with her family once again.
4. Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin
Nothing is more entertaining than watching the siblings bickering with each other. However, in the case of Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin, their situation is more than just a casual fit.
Kya is a water-bender, Bumi is non-bender, and Tenzin is an air-bender. Being the only air bender after his father, the tension was his father’s (Aang’s) favorite. Aang believed that after him only Tenzin could carry the legacy of air benders forward, so he unconsciously often neglected Kya and Bumi.
Consequently, both of them share envy feelings with Tenzin and but never openly display it.
Three of them live separately and rarely meet each other. Only after, the Republic City is on the verge of collapse and also, Tenzin’s house is being attacked, Kya and Bumi come to his rescue.
This gives them a chance to share their feelings and finally bond with each other. A story that closely resembles the real-life siblings.
3. Asami and Korra
Asami’s relationship with Korra is the most special one in the series. Korra first meets Asami as her crush’s girlfriend. She has no hard feelings towards her but feels awkward in communicating with her. Though they fall in love with the same person, they still have an amicable relationship. Especially when Korra goes missing and later, falls into the evil hands, Asami ensures her safety by all means possible.
They also share a mature understanding of the relationships. When they learn they like the same person, they don’t detest each other, rather respect each other’s sentiments.
Later, when both of them falls apart with their crush, Mako, they end up forming a much stronger bond. At last, what’s better than for a girl to have a girlfriend as her best friend and a lover? In the end, Asami and Korra realize that they understand each other more than anyone else and thus, finally become a loving pair.
2. Varrick and Zhu Li
The anime is incomplete without the mention of these two special characters. Varrick is a billionaire business magnate and is introduced as Asami’s business partner. He is charismatic and mysterious. Though he is a supporting character, his humorous relationship with his assistant Zhu Li is the highlight of the show. Zhu Li is required to be present everywhere with Varrick so that he can receive help on the spot.
At the beginning of the series, Zhu Li appears more of a robot assistant as she appears to have everything ready when needed by Varrick. She rarely shows emotions and looks more like a devotee of her boss, Varrick. Together they have a strong professional bond and often help Korra escape from the trouble.
Later, Zhu Li shows her aggressive side when she faces a tough situation to save Varrick. In the end, she confesses her feelings for Varrick. Varrick, first, acts oblivious to the situation, but later expresses his love for Zhu Li. Their relationship arc is quite fascinating as they move from a formal relationship to an intensely romantic one. Their marriage is the climax of the series.
1. Wan and Raava
Wan’s relationship with Raava is the real deal of the series. It is because of this connection that the whole avatar’s concept was born. Wan is the first avatar and Raava is the avatar spirit, who is known for light and peace. While every relationship exists until death, Wan’s and Raava’s relationship has been alive for more than 10,000 years. When the avatar dies, his soul is born with a different body along with Raava, and thus, they have forged an unbreakable connection with each other for the past so many years and more to come.
Similar to many relationships, Wan’s story starts with Raava with detest. Though Raava is a gentle spirit, she condemns Wan’s action of freeing Vaatu, the evil spirit, from her gripe. However, Raava soon forgives Wan as he shows promising efforts to help her in confining Vaatu and eventually, succeeds. To ensure the evil spirit may never get powerful again in the future, Raava merges with Wan’s soul giving him and his upcoming incarnations the power of all the four elements - air, water, fire, and earth. Thus, the avatar comes into existence.
Relationships can be of any sort and can last for a few days to many years, but only a few of them lingers forever. These five relations not only end with a happy conclusion but also strike an emotional chord in everyone’s heart.
