8 Romantic Movies for Every Occasion

1. La La Land - For A Magical Hollywood Love Story With Just A Dash Of Reality

This brilliant movie has earned its spot on my list of personal favorites for its impeccable production design, memorable soundtrack, and of course, its heartfelt Hollywood romance. La La Land tells the story of Mia, a struggling actress originally working in a coffee shop to make ends meet, and Sebastian, a frustrated pianist hopping around from gig to gig, eager to share his passion about the forgotten world of jazz. The two accidentally run into one another on several coincidental occasions before coming to terms with their undeniable chemistry and falling in love. The movie does an excellent job of depicting the hardships of being a performer in the middle of Los Angeles as Mia auditions for a countless number of roles and even attempts to write her own play and Sebastian joins his old classmate's "jazz fusion" band and swallows his hatred for the meaningless music he is performing out of fear that he will let Mia down. Without giving too much away, I can say that this movie is the perfect balance of love, passion, hardships, and emotion, and the ideal movie for all the dreamers out there.

2. The Big Sick - For A Modern Dramedy That Sheds Light On The Hardships Of Interracial Couples

Inspired by a true story, The Big Sick follows the lives of Kumail, a Pakistani Uber driver and part time stand up comedian, and Emily, a graduate student studying psychology. After meeting at one of Kumail's comedy shows, the two characters have a one night stand, but can't seem to get enough of one another and slowly fall in love over the course of several months. However, trouble in paradise arises as Kumail's parents continue to pressure him into an arranged marriage and Emily uncovers the unlikelihood of their relationship progressing any further. Soon afterwards, Kumail is forced to rethink his priorities as Emily falls into a coma and he comes to terms with the depth of his feelings towards her. A perfect blend of comedy and emotion, this film is a excellent choice for just about anyone looking for a modern love story with the same whimsical feel of a traditional romance.

3. Crazy Stupid Love - For A Tale Of Not 1, But 3 Love Stories In One Hilarious Romantic Comedy

If you're looking for that pure iconic laugh-out-loud romantic comedy to watch with your family, this is the movie for you. The film is centered around the rocky marriage of Cal and Emily Weaver, as Emily reveals that she has been cheating on her husband with one of her coworkers, claiming that the spark in her marriage was no longer there. As a result of his agonizing pain, Cal immediately moves out and begins to drink his sorrows away at the local bar nearly every night until he meets a man by the name of Jacob Palmer. Jacob is a classic example of a charismatic womanizer with the mission of getting Cal back in the game by teaching him how to pick up women, revamping his style, and allowing him to reclaim his masculinity. However, as opposed to solely focusing on Cal's relationships, the movie follows the lives of several other people, including the children of the Weaver family, Jacob himself, and numerous other characters, making this a timeless movie for all ages.

4. The Perks Of Being A Wallflower - For A Turbulent Yet Eye-Opening High School Journey Of A Troubled Teen

Set in the early 1900s, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower provides a raw and honest outlook on a multitude of teenage struggles and experiences as the film draws in on a freshman by the name of Charlie. Shortly after the opening scene, we learn that Charlie is battling with clinical depression and anxiety rooted in a traumatizing event that took place in his childhood. Though first rather uneasy about making new friends, Charlie soon meets Sam and Patrick, two step siblings both in their senior year, and allows himself to immerse in all different aspects of a traditional high school experience. Viewers see the world through Charlie's unique perspective as he encounters close knit friendships, various disputes, and his first love, all while uncovering the truth about what happened to him. A beautiful coming of age film full of friendship, resilience, and heart, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower film adaptation doesn't fail to meet the lofty expectations set in place by Stephen Chbosky's original novel.

5. The Best Of Me - For A Less Known But Certainly Not Less Emotional Nicholas Sparks Movie Adaptation

Though I am a fan of The Notebook, as I'm sure many of you romantics are, I personally find The Best Of Me to be an incredibly underrated film, despite its lovable characters, whirlwind of a plot, and heartfelt connection to every viewer. The movie does a magnificent job of conveying a love story for the ages as Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier rekindle their high school romance when they are forced to meet again due to the death of their mutual friend years later. Flashing back to their teenage years, the film slowly provides insight on their initial encounter in 1992, their past relationship as a whole, and the reason for why they ultimately parted ways. As the two characters reflect on the years they have spent apart and the new developments in their lives (such as a husband and family in Amanda's), they ponder over the consequences of their actions and question how to proceed. This unfeigned cinematic production will tug at your heart strings and leave you on the edge of your seat to the very last second.

6. Going The Distance - For A Story Of Two Long Distance Lovers Battling 3000 Miles

One of the more unpopular movies on this list, Going The Distance reflects on the stress and strain of a long distance relationship in a rather comedic sense while still maintaining a strong central moral at the root of the film. After a drunken one night stand, Erin and Garrett agree to a casual relationship, seeing as Erin is moving across the country in a matter of six weeks. However, they go on a number of dates only to realize that they have genuine feelings for one another and eventually decide to pursue a relationship while Erin is in California and Garrett is in New York. Despite their strong kick off, jealousy, miscommunication, and career choices start to get in the way of their connection, leaving the two characters at a crossroads. Comical and tear-jerking all at once, this film is a great choice for a long distance couple relating to the hardships or anyone in search of a genuine story of love and perseverance.

7. Call Me By Your Name - For A Glorious Summer Romance Between Two Young Men Uncovering Their Sexualities

Taking place in Northern Italy during the early 1980s, Call Me By Your Name tells the story of Elio, a teenage musical prodigy and bookworm, and Oliver, an easygoing graduate student spending the summer at Elio's house. Initially, the two characters have a rather awkward relationship to one another as Elio avoids his undeniable feelings for Oliver and proceeds to engage in a romantic affair with his female friend. Nevertheless, he soon subtly confesses his love to Oliver, but Oliver states that they cannot pursue a relationship of fear of being exposed. Respectful of Oliver's wishes, the two young men steer clear of each other for the time being, but eventually give in to their temptations and bask in their remarkable connection for the remainder of the summer until Oliver must return home. For a scenic and powerful cinematic production that is bound to evoke a lot of tears, this movie is one high on my list of recommendation.

8. Silver Linings Playbook - For Two Lovers With An Unforgettable Bond Over A Painful Past

Though the concept of love at first sight is the foundation for many classic films in the history of cinema, Silver Linings Playbook takes a different spin on the formation of a relationship using a shared grief between Pat Solitano and Tiffany Maxwell. While Pat has recently been released from a mental facility after seriously injuring the man his wife had an affair with, Tiffany is a mourning widow with an unnamed condition that uses casual sex and alcohol to cope with her emotions. Shortly after meeting each other, Pat reveals that he is desperate to win back his ex wife Nikki, who has filed a restraining order against him, and Tiffany requests his help as her partner for a dance competition in exchange for her assistance with delivering a letter to his wife. However, it doesn't take long for jealousy to erupt in Tiffany's heart as she sees Nikki on the day of the competition and immediately drowns her sorrows in booze. Humorous, well thought out, and passionate, this film will have you rooting for the indisputable love between the two main characters and leave you on the edge of your seat until the final second.
