A plain story is predictable and doesn’t offer much mental work to the viewer. But what if this straightforward, simple-looking story takes a fickle turn, whether it’s the death of the protagonist or the villain turning into a real hero. Anyway, these twists play with our minds in a way we can’t imagine.
We are a big happen fan of mysterious plots. Instead of spoon-feeding, we love when we need to put our minds into use to reach the depth of the story. Here’s a list of 20 anime with jaw-dropping plot twists that none of us can even think about:
20. Lupin The Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine
Many people are becoming victims of a dubious new religion. Lupin ||| invades this group, in a hope to steal the hidden treasure from the leader. However, his intentions soon melt away when he lays eyes on the beautiful captivating woman, who has enthralled even the leader.
The story revolves primarily around fashionista thief Fujiko Mine and her meeting with Lupin |||, the greatest thief of the modern time. Fujiko is sweet, seductive and a heroic killer. She has everything to steal your heart away, even your entire fortune. She is ready for anything to fulfill her deep desires. Her actions lead to baffling twists in the story that you can’t even imagine.
19. Subete ga F ni Naru (The Perfect Insider)
On a remote island, a genius programmer Shiki Magata works at a research facility. She is living her life as a recluse for many years. She rarely sees anybody, except when the university student Moe Nishinosono along with her associate professor Souhei Saikawa visits her for help.
However, their meeting ends quickly when a well-known artificial intelligence researcher and the director of the lab are murdered under mysterious circumstances. Now, they both are caught up in a locked-room murder mystery. The things aren’t the way they seem and there are many secrets hidden in that search facility. Moe and Saikawa try to unravel the truth and Magata’s hidden past.
18. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)
Yukiteru Amano is a lonely high school student. He spends most of his days writing about daily events in his cellphone. He also talks with two not-so imaginary friends Deus Ex Machina, the God of time and space, and Muru Muru, the god’s assistant.
Disclosing himself as a real being, Deus converts Yukiteru’s phone into a future diary, which can predict the future for up to ninety days. This forces him to join a survival game with 11 others who hold similar future diaries. The last person standing will be called the new god of time and space.
To kill 11 others, Yukiteru unwillingly pairs up with his obsessive stalker Yuno Gasai, who also holds a similar diary. Though Yuno takes the responsibility of Yukiteru’s safety, there’s more to her story than what’s visible to the naked eye.
17. Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card
The anime is a sequel to the Cardcaptor Sakura. The original series had its own revealing stories that hold the viewers’ attention till the very end. In the sequel, the plot twists are doubled. Sakura is a junior high school student. She has the same friends’ circle and boyfriend, Li Syaoran.
The anime takes a turn when her old cards and magic key stop working and she discovers a new magic key along with a different aura of magic spirits revolving around her. Later, it’s revealed the magic spirits are Sakura’s own imagination and she has now gained immense power to create her own magic cards.
The twist doesn’t end here. She has also befriended a transfer school, Akiho who frequently appears in her dreams wearing a cloak. Also, Akiho’s butler Yuna D. Kaito is a mystery as he is expected to be one of the most powerful mages in the world, who was expelled from the magical society.
There’s also something fishy going on with Sakura’s brother and her old friend Eriol who now lives in England.
16. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Out of curiosity, the protagonist brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric perform a forbidden act of alchemy. In return, they have to face terrible consequences for their transgression - Edward ends up losing his left leg and Alphonse his entire physical body. It is only after that, that they realize Alchemy is bounded by the Law of Equivalent Exchange which means “In order to obtain something, something of exactly equal value must be lost.”
After their three years of rigorous searching, the brothers discover the Philosopher’s Stone, a mythical relic that can eliminate the Law of Equivalent Exchange. However, the situations get worse when they unravel the truth behind the stone and also the murky history of their nation. In a desire to live a normal life again, the brothers need to look back again and consider if their efforts were really virtuous or not.
The story is set in the 22nd century Japan. The country’s rules and regulations are governed by the Sibyl System, a fully automated system that determines the crime level of each citizen through their mental state, also called Psycho-Pass.
Inspectors catch criminals on the basis of Sibyl System’s final decision along with Enforcers, who are latent criminals and have been granted enough freedom to carry out the Inspectors’ dirty work.
Akane Tsunemori, the main protagonist, is a young Inspector with a strong desire to uphold justice. However, as she works along with veteran Inspector-turned-Enforcer Shinya Kogami, she discovers critical faults in the Sibyl System and how the floating brains of human beings are being used to make it function.
14. Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika (Magical Girl Madoka Magica)
The anime isn’t wary of introduction. It has received international acclaims for its visuals, themes, soundtracks, and especially for its unexpected plot twists.
The lives of Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki take a drastic mode when they meet the new transfer student, Homura Akemi, and Kyuubey, a cat-like creature. The girls become the victims of a serious plot when Kyuubey offers them to fulfill one of their wishes and in return of which, they’ll need to become the magical girls. Homura advises them to reject the offer because things are not often the way they look.
The anime is a story of hope, desperation, and friendship. It shows the horrifying difficulties of being a magical girl and what price one must pay to make their dreams come true.
Ichigo Kurosaki is an ordinary yet special high schooler who can see spirits walking on the streets and can even talk to them. He lives a fine life until his family peace is invaded by a Hollow, which is a corrupt spirit that devours on human souls.
During that time, he comes to meet a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki. She gets injured while protecting his family. To defeat the Hollow, Ichigo accepts Rukia’s offer to take her powers and work as a Soul Reaper.
Ichigo is, later, joined by his classmates to work as Soul Reapers due to their unique abilities. As Ichigo along with his comrades works on fulfilling their assigned duties, the situation takes a sharp turn when they realize there are not only the Hollows who possess a threat to the human world but also some Soul Reapers who want to invade the humanity and also the Soul Society.
12. Samurai Flamenco
Since his childhood, Masayoshi Hazama is deeply obsessed with superhero shows. He works as a male model in the day and in the night, he fulfills his childhood dream as Samurai Flamenco. He isn’t gifted with superpowers or a high-tech brain.
He wears a superhero costume and takes the criminals head-on. When his antics catch the public’s attention, policeman Hidenori Gotou discovers his real identity. He initially advises him to leave this job to police, but later becomes a part of his antics.
However, the situation soon turns worse, when the subject is the fate of the world. Both of them embark on the journey to protect the world and discover the real meaning of being a hero.
Additionally, their stories not at all resemble the famous Marvel or DC comics, in fact, these are the unexpected events of fate that make the anime so jaw-dropping.
11. Steins; Gate
Rintarou Okabe is a self-proclaimed mad scientist. He is deeply interested in inventing promising future gadgets and rent a room to accomplish his dreams. He works along with his fellow lab members: Mayuri Shiina, his foolish childhood friend, and Hashida Itaru, a deviant hacker, aka “Daru”.
They spent most of their time with the machine named “Phone microwave”. It is known to convert bananas into the plies of green gel. Though the invention is strangely miraculous, it doesn’t provide Okabe with anything exemplary that he can refer to as a scientific breakthrough.
Their lives take a radical change when they come across an unexpected success - the Phone Microwave has certain features that can send emails to the past. In other words, the machine can alter the flow of history.
10. Code Geass
Code Geass is filled with breathtaking twists and turns, most of which is revealed only in the last few episodes of the series. Lelouch vi Britannia is an exiled prince and wants to take revenge on the Holy Britannian Empire for his exile, his mother’s death and his sister’s handicapped condition.
Seven years later, Lelouch meets a mysterious girl named C.C., who gives him Geass - the Power of Kings. Acknowledging the power of Geass, Lelouch in the disguise of Zero carries on with his mission to destroy the Empire.
However, as the story progresses, he turns out to be the enemy of Japan and an ally of the Empire. The anime becomes more bewitching when Lelouch realizes the truth behind his exile, his mother’s death, and many other secrets start to unravel in front of him.
Naruto is a ninja of the Uzumaki clan. On the day of his birth, he became the vessel for the Nine-Tails - an undesirable fate that led to his rejection by most of Konoha throughout his childhood.
After joining Team Kakashi along with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, he works hard to gain the village’s trust. His ultimate dream is to become the village’s Hokage (strongest ninja in the village). Naruto faces his own hurdles due to his eccentric behavior and lonely life.
His best friend and rival, Sasuke is aiming to take revenge from his older brother Itachi for the slaughter of their entire Uchiha clan. It is his life mission to kill Itachi. Itachi is infamously known to be an international criminal associated with a criminal organization called Akatsuki, though later, it is revealed that his motives were always in the interest of his brother and the entire village. This made him a loyal ninja of the Konohagakure till the very end.
8. Death Note
Death Note is a mysterious black notebook thrown in the human world by a Shinigami named Ryuk. Light Yagami, the main protagonist, finds the book and becomes obsessed with how it instantly kills the person just by writing their name in it.
Soon enough, numerous convicts and criminals start dying out of inexplicable circumstances. The global media and police force begin looking for the mastermind and name him “Kira”. To make the operation successful, Interpol hires the undefeated international detective known as L. L is widely celebrated for solving complicated criminal cases in the shortest time possible. He, even, figures out that it’s Light who is committing all these crimes, but Light also manages to prove himself innocent.
Since Light is unaware of L’s real name, he can’t kill him, which makes L invincible and almost impossible to kill. The anime takes a drastic turn when L falls on the ground from his chair and dies due to a heart attack. Though it is not Light who killed him, rather the Shinigami himself who wrote L’s real name in the Death Note.
7. Hōseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
In a distant future, the planet Earth has been attacked six times by meteorites, causing severe damage in the process. All life is nearly destroyed and only a single coast is left out of all.
Over the long time period, a new and unique race of conscious lifeforms manifests called the immortal jewels resembling human beings. Among them, there is Phosphophyllite aka Phos who is weak and thought to be useless by their peers.
When Lunarians, the Moon people, attack on the jewel people, Phos decides to help their friends, but instead, given the task to create a natural history encyclopedia. After reluctantly accepting the task, Phos meets Cinnabar, an intelligent gem who is relegated to govern the isolated island. Their friendship is the central attraction of this anime. It not only involves a strong bond but also becomes a subject of unexpected turns of events.
6. Ansatsu Kyōshitsu (Assassination Classroom)
A mysterious creature destroys the moon by reducing to a permanent crescent. To catch him, the Kunugigaoka Middle School assigns the task to the students of class 3-E. They are required to assassinate the criminal before the same disaster befalls the Earth.
The Japanese government promises a reward of $100 million to whoever kills the creature first. The creature is named “Koro-sensei” who teaches the same students and helps them to improve their grades and individual skills.
The task becomes highly impossible for the students as the Koro-sensei does not only have superpowers, but he is also referred to as the indestructible teacher. The situation becomes more and more complicated as the series progresses, though later it is revealed that Koro-sensei is innocent and there’s an entirely different story behind the Moon’s destruction.
5. Black Clover
Within every 5 to 10 episodes, Black Clover comes up with an unthinkable twist. It is a story about a magic-less boy named Asta, who’s the only one of his kind. Since the setting is in a magic world where everyone can do magic whether weak or strong, Asta turns to be an exception with no magic powers and becomes a subject of intense amusement and criticism.
Having left at the church as an orphan when he was just a baby along with another boy named Yuno, they both face hatred from the people of noble and royal statues. The story takes an unexpected turn when Yuno becomes a wielder of four-leaf clover grimoire, the grimoire which brings good luck to its owner and originally belonged to the first Wizard King.
On the other hand, due to the lack of magic abilities, Asta receives a five-leaf clover grimoire, the grimoire of a devil that has the power to nullify all types of magic. Unknown to all, later in the story, Asta becomes one of the most powerful mages in the entire kingdom. And Yuno turns out to be the true ruler of the Spade Kingdom.
4. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack On Titan)
Many centuries ago, mankind was forced to become almost extinct by giant humanoid creatures called titans. To escape their wrath, humans were forced to hide behind the ginormous concentric walls. It’s been a hundred years now and no single titan has attacked them till now.
However, their happiness soon takes a devastating end when a colossal titan effortlessly breaches the so-called impregnable outer wall. And the fight for survival begins anew.
Personally witnessing the loss of his mother and other people at the hands of the titans, Eren devotes his life to annihilate these creatures by joining the Survey Corps, a military unit that fights against the merciless humanoids. Later, shocking revelations about the titans create havoc among humans, when they come to know that there’re some human beings who are secretly titans.
3. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
Several years after an ancient evil was rescued from the sea depths, Joutarou Kuujou is leaving a peaceful life in a prison cell. He hasn’t committed any crimes yet urges not to be released. He believes he is in possession of an evil spirit who can harm the entire world.
However, when Joesph gets involved in a fiery brawl with his friend Mohammed Avdol, he is forced out of the prison. He, now, has to learn the method to control the power of the evil spirit, better known as a “Stand”.
Unfortunately, a “Stand” gets activated within Holly, Joutarou’s mother, which threatens her to consume within the next 50 days. Joutarou along with his grandfather and allies are now on a mission to destroy the immortal spirit and cure Holly as fast as possible.
They travel overseas to Cairo, Egypt where they have to fight several other spirits before finding the solution. If they fail in their mission, then the entire humanity will have to face the grim fate.
2. Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)
Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high school girl living in a small town of Itomori. She is bored with her small-town life and longs to live the life of a Tokyo boy, a dream that is in contrast with her present state.
In Tokyo, Taki Tachibana is a busy high school student who also has a part-time job in a restaurant and aims to become an architect in the future. One day, they both switch bodies and Mitsuha finds herself living a life of a Tokyo boy but in Taki’s body. And Taki is living the life of Mitsuha in her body. They begin communicating with each other by writing messages on paper, each other’s skin, and cell phones.
Suddenly, the communication breaks down due to unknown reason and Taki can no longer contact Mitsuha in any way possible. He tries to figure out her location and realizes that she died along with other inhabitants when the comet destroyed her town three years ago.
1. Shinsekai yori (From the New World)
When 0.1% of the world’s population is attacked by a sudden outburst of psychokinesis, a rapid transformation takes place. The godlike power to modify matter made many power wielders violent, causing a long period of suffering and upheaval.
After the destructive era, the psychic humans managed to attain temporary peace by insulating their society and forming a new world regulated by complex rules. Saki Watanabe is a 12-year-old girl living in the town of Kamisu 66. She has recently gained consciousness of her powers and is enticed to find her friends back together. Her circle includes Satoru Asahina, the mischievous, Mamoru Itou, the shy, Maria Akizuki, the cheerful, and Shun Aonuma who is a mysterious boy yet highly admired by Saki. They study at Sage Academy, a special school meant for psychics.
The unavoidable situation starts to come across when Saki realizes that many of the humans have still not awakened their powers and she is curious about their fate. Also, many children have become the subject of secretive matters such as abduction.
It is hard to find an anime who doesn’t have a plot twist. It is equally hard to find those anime who can make these plot twists worth watching. While many of the mentioned anime makes use of cliche twists, still the style of their presentation makes them readily enjoyable.
