Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei is a light novel by Tsutomu Satou adapted into an anime in 2014. This sci-fi anime is overflowing with unique magic elements, action scenes, erotic visuals, romance, and has a school-based setting. The mixture of pole apart concepts is a difficult thing to pull out. But the way this anime carries it all together, it deserves to be noted as a masterpiece.

The main protagonist Tatsuya Shiba studies at First High School along with his younger sister Miyuki. His main job is to protect her sister as a bodyguard as she is the heir to the Yotsuba clan. The school divides magicians into two categories: First is “Bloom” in which Miyuki is placed. This category has high-ranked magicians. Tatsuya ends up in second which is “Weed”. In this, low-ranked magicians are placed.

1. Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (Chivalry of a Failed Knight)

The setting is in the Alternative Earth world. Humans are referred to as blazers who are gifted with supernatural abilities. They can materialize weapons called “Device” made from a person’s souls.

At Hagun Academy, blazers are selected on the basis of their strength to participate in the Seven Star Sword Art Festival. It is held to determine the strongest Apprentice Knight in Japan. Ikki Kurogane is Hagun’s weakest F-rank blazer and is thought to be “The Worst One”. On the other hand, Stella Vermillion is one of the highest A-ranking blazers.

On her first day, she is asked to share a room with Ikki. When Ikki unexpectedly sees Stella half-naked, Stella challenges him for a duel where the loser will have to obey the winner forever. The duel results in Stella’s defeat but they both agree to become roommates and train together for the festival.

2. Ginga Eiyū Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

The story is about a distant future. The setting is within the Milky Way Galaxy, where two mighty space powers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, are in a war with each other for the last 150 years.

In the Galactic Empire, Reinhard von Müsel is a military genius. His aim is to end the corruption and defeat the Free Planets Alliance so that the whole galaxy can be unified under his rule.

Within the Free Planets Alliance, Yang Wen-il is an excellent military strategist. He is well-known for overcoming impossible situations and reducing the risk of casualties. The anime is filled with all types of characters including nobility, admirals, politicians, commoners, farmers, and soldiers.

There’s also a neutral power known as Phezzan Dominion, who is in trade with both the parties.

3. To Aru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)

The story revolves around Academy City, an independent city located in the west of Tokyo and acknowledged for its advanced educational and research institutions.

Toma Kamijo is Academy City’s student. His right hand has the ability to nullify all sorts of supernatural power. This often results in nullifying his own luck. One day Toma meets a young girl named Index, a nun from Necessarius. It is a highly classified magic branch of the Church of England.

Through Index, Toma gets the chance to meet other members of the secret worlds of magic and science. The conflict occurs when Sorcerers and Espers in the city try to find the city secrets and the reason behind Toma’s unusual powers.

4. Nō Gēmu Nō Raifu (No Game No Life)

Sora and Shiro are modern-day hermits (better-called hikikomori). They are step-siblings and known as Blank in online gaming, which is an undefeated group of gamers. They are challenged to play a game of chess by Tet, a magical entity better called God of games. The step-siblings win the game and are invited to live in a world that is centered around games. Considering it to be a joke, they accept the invitation but are indeed send to a real-world called Disboard.

In Disboard, any act of stealing, killing, and fighting is forbidden. All matters including people’s lives are settled through games. In a desire to maintain their winning streak, Sora and Shiro have to conquer the sixteen ruling species and overthrow the God of games.

5. Gurizaia no Kajitsu (The Fruit of Grisaia)

Gurizaia no Kajitsu is an adult anime. The story is about Mihama Academy, a prison-like school with only five female students. Each student has their own personal reasons for being there.

The turbulence occurs when the protagonist Yuji Kazami joins the academy as a transfer student. His expectation of living an ordinary high school life is shattered when he finds the academy is a total opposite. Slowly, Yuji starts to understand each girl, their personalities, and their traumatic experiences.

The five girls are referred to as the fruits fallen from their trees and are in the state of deterioration. The responsibility lies on Yuji to act as a catalyst and save them all from themselves.

6. Kōkaku no Regiosu (Chrome Shell Regios)

In the post-apocalyptic world, the Earth is vastly inhabited by nano-machine-beasts called Filth Monsters. Humanity is forced to live in Regios, large mobile cities. They need to learn the art of weaponry and the power of Kei to protect themselves.

In the Academic City of Zuelini, Layfon Alseif, the main protagonist, wants to start a new life so he can forget his past. However, Kalian Loss, the Student Council President, and Nina Antalk, a Military Arts student, discover his past and ask him to join their military group.

The story progresses with Layfon’s life in Zuelini and the occasional flashbacks of his time spent in Glenden as Heaven’s Blade.

7. Gakusen Toshi Asterisk (The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water)

After the Invertia impact event destroyed most of the cities on Earth, Integrated Enterprise Foundations, a group of megacorporations, rose to power. The event also altered the genes of most of the human beings, enriching them with supernatural abilities. These new species are called Genestella.

The city of Rikka, better-called Asterisk, has six academies where young Genestella take part in various tournaments called Festas. Meanwhile, Ayato Amagiri joins the Seidoukan Academy to find his missing sister, Haruka, an ex-student of the academy. Though Ayato has no interest in academic activities, he is forced to take part in tournaments due to various devious circumstances.

8. Hagure Yūsha no Esutetika (Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero)

The anime is about a peculiar world where young men and women are spirited away to a distant world of sword and magic named Alayzard. They need to fight various battles for their survival. Those who manage to survive are gifted with magical abilities.

There’s also an international training organization named Babel. It protects these youngsters who successfully returned from Alayzard and trains them to make the best use of their power.

Akatsuki, the rebellious protagonist, comes back to the world along with a beautiful young girl named Miu. She is the daughter of the Demon King, who lost in the battle against Akatsuki.

9. Sutoraiku za Buraddo (Strike the Blood)

The story revolves around Itogami Island, a man-made island located in the south of Japan. The island is known as a dwelling place of monsters and demons.

Kojou Akatsuki is an ordinary high school student in the Demon District. His life takes a sudden turn when a critical encounter leaves him with the abilities of a vampire. He becomes a center of attraction on discovering that he is now an immensely powerful vampire, called the fourth primogenitor. His powers are seen as a threat.

However, he manages to take control of his abilities and form an alliance with the Lion King organization to protect the city from evil forces.

10. Kaze no Stigma

Kazuma Kannagi is considered to be the heir of the Kannagi family. But due to his inability to wield fire (Enjutsu), he is seen unfit for the position.

On his father’s encouragement, Kazuma decides to compete to win his rights over Enraiha, an heirloom sword wielded by the family heir. Sadly, Kazuma is defeated by his younger second cousin, Ayano Kannagi. As a result, his father banishes him from the family.

After four years, he returns as a master of wind technique, called Fujutsu along with a new name: Kazuma Yagami. At the same time, many of his family members are killed using Fujutsu. The blame falls upon Kazuma and several of his family members come forward to fight him. However, Kazuma wants to fight only against his father, the most powerful Enjustsu user.

11. Furumetaru Panikku! (Full Metal Panic!)

The anime is about Sousuke Sagara, a member of a secret anti-terrorist organization called Mithril. Their job is to protect Kaname Chidori, a high school student. To do so, Sousuke joins Chidori’s school as a student. Due to his lack of social interactions, he is seen as a military maniac. He often interprets different situations through a combat perspective.

Chidori later realizes that Sousuke joined the school to protect her. But the reason, why she is a target of different organizations, is unclear.

12. Sword Art Online: Alicization

Sword Art Online: Alicization is the third season of the original anime series. This has many similarities with Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei.

The Soul Translator is a modern full-dive interface that interacts with the user’s soul (called as Fluctlight in the anime). The private institute Raith wants to perfect their creation with the help of Sword Art Online survivor Kazuto Kirigaya. He is a part-time employee.

As per the contract, any memories created by the Soul Translator in the virtual world are erased when the person returns to the real world. Due to which, Kazuto can vaguely remember a single name, Alice, which makes him anxious whenever it is mentioned in reality.
